Boston and state officials have launched Massachusetts 250, a campaign celebrating the state’s Revolutionary War history through 2026.
Why it matters: Gov. Maura Healey said the campaign will put often overlooked stories about Black, indigenous and LGBTQ+ change-makers alongside the well-known stories of Paul Revere and Crispus Attucks.
State of play: The state will fund $1.5 million in grants for 37 projects statewide as part of the initiative, Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll said outside the State House Tuesday morning.
- The projects highlight themes of revolution throughout the state’s history, from walking trails to websites to new museum exhibits.
- Recipients include the Freedom Trail Foundation, the Museum of African American History on Nantucket and the Boston 4 Foundation (which runs the Fourth of July extravaganza).
What they’re saying: “Together, we are honoring our revolutionaries and our residents, including the people whose stories were never told and now will be front and center,” Mayor Michelle Wu said.
- Wu and other officials highlighted several of the state’s firsts, from having the first public school and first public park, to inventing basketball and helping develop the COVID-19 vaccine.
