Setting the scene:
The British were trapped in Boston and everyday citizens experienced relentless hardships which extended into surrounding towns. The constant fear of an American assault, hunger, coupled with outbreaks of disease and erosion of civil liberties under martial rule, fostered an atmosphere of desperation.
