Massachusetts students invited to participate in statewide history competition

PLYMOUTH, Mass.

Calling all K-12 students in Massachusetts. The governor’s administration is encouraging students to submit history projects as part of a statewide contest.

As part of “Massachusetts Revolutionaries: Bold Stories, Bright Legacies,” the Healey-Driscoll administration wants students to submit a project of their choosing that tells a story about one of Massachusetts’ revolutionaries.

Students have until June 30 to submit their stories at Massachusetts250.org. The stories can be in various formats — anything from artwork to performance pieces.

Education Secretary Patrick Tutwiler made the contest announcement on Thursday at Manomet Elementary School in Plymouth.

During his visit, Tutwiler sat in on a history lesson and said it’s never too early to get kids excited about this subject.

“It’s all about helping students understand that civic learning is not just about learning about the government; it’s about learning about their rights and responsibilities as citizens,” Tutwiler said. “Those conversations can begin in kindergarten, quite frankly, and we saw an excellent conversation happening with fifth graders today. Wrestling with some of the bigger questions of our history’s time.”

This contest is part of a statewide initiative to celebrate 250 years of America’s independence.
