The Royall House and Slave Quarters

The Royall House is the former home of Isaac Royall, a loyalist and the largest slave-holding family in Massachusetts at the time of the Revolution. At least sixty people were enslaved in a freestanding slave quarters building on the property, the only one of its kind left standing in New England. After Royall fled Massachusetts in the aftermath of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the mansion was used as a headquarters by Revolutionary generals.

The museum, called The Royall House and Slave Quarters, seeks to shine a light on the history of slavery in Massachusetts and how that is intertwined with America’s Revolution. The house and slave quarters, as well as an archaeological exhibit, are open to the public.
