Timothy Pickering, the home’s owner, was a Revolutionary War veteran who led the Salem militia and served in the Siege of Boston. He later became Washington’s Quartermaster General of the Continental Army, and after the war, became the Secretary of State, Secretary of War, and Postmaster General under Presidents Washington and Adams. He is the only person in US history to serve three cabinet posts. He later served as US Senator and Representative. He lived here most of his life. The Pickering family lived here for ten successive generations until 1998, and some claim it to be the longest time a single family has lived in a single house in America.
It is currently owned and operated by the Pickering Foundation, which offers seasonal access by appointment. The Foundation also hosts events and provides scholarships for local high school students interested in history.
