This house was built for a colonial Loyalist who fled for England after the outbreak of the Revolution. George Washington occupied the home as his headquarters during the Siege of Boston between 1775 and 1776. During this time, the name “United States of America” was coined for the first time by Washington’s staff who were residing in the home. It was later home to the famous poet Hanry Wadsworth Longfellow for 50 years.
The National Park Service provides public access and tours between May and October.
