The Captain John Whipple House

While named for an earlier colonial military officer, John Whipple, the house was also home to Colonel Joseph Hodgkins, a Revolutionary War veteran who was written about in David McCollough’s famous novel 1776. McCollough features the letters that Colonel Hodgkins wrote home to his wife. The Colonel was the leader of the Ipswich militia company, which took part in the siege of Boston and the Battle of Bunker Hill. He lived in the house after the war.

The house is owned and operated by the Ipswich Museum, which provides house tours for the public from late May to October. The house was bought by a local historical society in 1898 and opened to the public, making it one of the oldest continuously operating house museums in the country.
