Built and owned by Reverend Adonijah Bidwell, the first minister to live in the area of Monterey. The Reverend was a patriot and active supporter of the Revolutionary forces. Henry Knox passed through Monterey, and potentially the Bidwell property, as he transported Fort Ticonderoga’s cannons to Dorchester Heights. There is a marker in Monterey on nearby Route 23 for the Henry Knox Trail, which is placed in every community in New York and Massachusetts through which Knox transported the 59 Ticonderoga cannons.
The Bidwell House Museum now provides tours of the house and maintains gardens and walking trails on site.
