We are a small farm town, but we have a high-ranking history in the Revolutionary War, and we have a BIG museum. Our museum tells the story of how Dracut fought at Battle Road, Bunker Hill, Ticonderoga, Saratoga and southward. Dracut consistently filled its quota, sending more men per capita than any other town in Massachusetts. General James Mitchel Varnum was hand-chosen by General George Washington, and two Dracut soldiers have their portraits hanging in Washington D. C. - General Joseph Bradley Varnum who became Speaker of the House and Barzillai Lew, our famous African American fifer. Louis Ansart, the Frenchman who built the cannons that won the war, retired in Dracut and shared his French flauntiness with everyone he touched. And lastly, Dracut was the home of Private Jacob Coburn, who marched on April 19, 1775, and whose home is now the fully furnished colonial mansion that is now an awesome museum.
