The town has been awarded a $40,000 grant that is slated to go toward the construction of a Revolutionary War memorial, according to a report from Your Arlington.
The funds are being given by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism’s 250 Grant Program. The town had previously been granted $60,000 to fund the Arlington250 commemorations, and this second round of funding is meant for the Foot of the Rocks Battlefield Memorial. The battle took place on April 19, 1775 on what is now the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Lowell Street. As British troops retreated from the battles of Lexington and Concord, they were met at the Foot of the Rocks by thousands of colonial militia men from over thirty towns, resulting in intense combat that led to significant casualties.
The town broke ground on the construction of the memorial earlier this year.
