Bedford Historical Society

The Bedford Historical Society, established in 1893, is located in Bedford's historic Old Town Hall, a charming building that served as a school and town offices when it opened in 1856. Situated across from the Town Common in the heart of Bedford's Historic District, the Bedford Historical Society welcomes visitors of all ages to explore the town's history through its permanent and rotating exhibits, which are drawn from the Society's extensive collections.

In celebration of America’s 250th, the exhibit, “Bedford Answers the Call,” which opens on April 12, 2025, explores the complex decisions made by the people of Bedford during the events leading up to the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, and will tell the stories the courageous action by the Bedford Minutemen and Militia who marched to Concord that day.

The Society houses a vast private collection of Bedford artifacts, memorabilia, and photographs. Its documents date back to 1651, it holds over 5,000 photographs from the mid-1800s, and its objects span from prehistoric times 10,000-12,000 years ago through colonial times to the present, providing a unique journey through Bedford's history.

The Society is a valuable resource for those interested in their family history, house history, or local research, as well as for anyone interested in the American Revolution, architecture, antiquities, or the history of Bedford. It also offers an annual program series on Bedford and local history open to the public and maintains historical exhibits in several municipal buildings, inviting everyone to explore Bedford's rich history.

In addition, the Society offers a diverse range of merchandise, including Bedford Flags, books, maps, pictures, clothing, and unique memorabilia, allowing visitors to take home a piece of Bedford's history.

Admission to the Society is free and open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather and staffing permitting.
