DESCRIPTION:Discover the diverse and fascinating roles Hingham and its people played in the national struggle for independence\, from Major General Benjamin Lincoln’s collaborative friendship with Commander in Chief George Washington\, to Hingham’s wartime production of tens of thousands of wooden canteens\, to its “fighting minister” at Lexington and Concord\, its artillerymen devastated at Brandywine\, its field surgeon at Yorktown under Alexander Hamilton’s command\, and a young British girl interned in Hingham as an enemy alien who later became a celebrated novelist. \nJames B. Conroy is an award-winning author of narrative history\, an honorary fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society\, a member of the Hingham Historical Society’s Board of Directors\, and a former chairman of Hingham’s Advisory Committee. A graduate of the University of Connecticut\, Jim was a Senate speech writer and a congressman’s chief of staff in his youth and served for six years in the Naval Air Reserve. After graduating magna cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center\, he practiced commercial litigation law in Boston for 38 years\, during which time he started a second career as a historian and writer. His highly anticipated fourth book featuring Hingham in the American Revolution will be published by the Hingham Historical Society in 2026 to coincide with America’s 250th. Jim and his wife Lynn have lived in Hingham since 1981.

DESCRIPTION:How does music bring the past to life? Join film composer and pianist David Cieri for a discussion about his experience working with award-winning documentary filmmakers\, creating musical soundtracks that engage our emotions to support the historic narrative playing out on screen. David will also perform excerpts from his most recent score for Ken Burns’s six-part documentary The American Revolution\, created in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and Johnny Gandelsman. \nDavid Cieri\, a musician and composer\, makes music for film\, concert\, and album release. Cieri has worked with numerous celebrated filmmakers\, including Ken Burns\, the Ewers Brothers\, and Barak Goodman. He has recorded nineteen acclaimed albums under his own name\, the last ten of which were released by Ropeadope Records. He has collaborated on a major live documentary project with the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage and has made two records with the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa. David wrote and performed the live scores for the first three seasons of The Paris Review podcasts. He teaches courses on Film Scoring and Music for Film at The City College of New York.

SUMMARY:Hingham’s Black Revolutionaries
DESCRIPTION:How did Hingham’s free and enslaved Black population experience the American Revolution? Join local historian Paula Bagger as she unpacks previously untold stories of service both on the battlefield and the home front. \nPaula Bagger is a premier historian of Hingham history. In 2024\, she was honored with the Judith Kimball Award in recognition of her decade of service to the Society\, including groundbreaking research on artist Prince Demah\, people of color in Hingham\, and\, most recently\, Hingham’s 1776 census return. Paula’s volunteer service with the Society began in 2007\, and she has served in numerous capacities\, including a five-year term as its President. In addition to her work with the Society\, Paula is employed as an attorney\, arbitrator\, and mediator\, with a specialty in business and commercial disputes. Paula earned an A.B. degree in history from Harvard University and a J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School.

They took up leadership roles in times of extreme political and social polarization when questions about the meaning of freedom\, independence\, and liberty divided households\, communities\, and the nation itself. SUMMARY:From Hingham to the Americas: New Perspectives on the 18th Century at the MFA
DESCRIPTION:Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of American Independence\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston is reimagining its 18th-century galleries of the Art of the Americas Wing for the first time since 2010. This major reinstallation brings together works from across the Americas\, highlighting the interconnected histories of the continent and examining how artists have contributed to emerging ideas of identity and nationhood. \nLucía Abramovich Sánchez is the Carolyn and Peter Lynch Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, where she works with a wide range of artwork that includes decorative arts and sculpture from North America and Latin America\, spanning over 3\,000 years of history. Dr. Abramovich Sánchez holds a B.A. from the College of William & Mary\, M.A. from the Sainsbury Research Unit at the University of East Anglia\, and Ph.D. from the Latin American Studies & Art History joint doctoral program at Tulane University. \nThe Hingham Historical Society Lecture Series is live and available either in-person or via ZOOM webinar.

SUMMARY:Concord Museum Forum: The Painter's Fire: A Forgotten History of the Artists Who Championed the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Uncover the overlooked role of patriot artists—women\, Black men enslaved and free\, and people of mixed race—who shaped the Revolution through art\, espionage\, and activism across America\, London\, and Paris. Their work helped inspire rebellion and forge a new political culture\, almost always armed with wax\, paint\, and wit rather than a musket or bayonet. Among these daring figures were enslaved artists with deep ties to Massachusetts\, including famous poet Phillis Wheatley and portrait painter Prince Demah. Together\, the experiences of this extraordinary artistic cohort testify to both the promise and the limits of liberty in the founding era. \nZara Anishanslin is Associate Professor of History and Art History at the University of Delaware. She is the author of the award-winning Portrait of a Woman in Silk: Hidden Histories of the British Atlantic World and has served as a historical consultant for the Philadelphia Museum of Art and “Hamilton: The Exhibition.”

DESCRIPTION:How has the Revolution changed the lives of ordinary Americans\, articulated ideals that have defined our history\, and continues to shape our world? \nJack Warren is a historian of the American Revolution and American public life. He is the author\, most recently\, of Freedom: The Enduring Importance of the American Revolution (2023). He served on the faculty of the University of Virginia\, where he edited The Papers of George Washington. As executive director of the Society of the Cincinnati\, he was the founding director of the American Revolution Institute. He is currently the Foundation of American Ideals’ Chief Executive and edits the foundation’s magazine\, The American Crisis (www.americanideal.org). Mr. Warren has been featured in David Rubenstein’s The American Story: Conversations with Master Historians. He has also appeared on the PBS NewsHour\, C-SPAN’s Washington Journal\, American Presidents\, and NPR’s All Things Considered. He is also a historical advisor to the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission. A native of Washington\, DC\, Mr. Warren lives in Alexandria\, Virginia.

The weekend culminates in the 250th commemorative reenactment of the Battle of Grape Island\, the oft overlooked “second” battle of the American Revolution.
