The exhibit will be on display at the Cabot House from September 6\, 2025 to July 4\, 2026. Tickets are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the New Bedford Whaling Museum will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today? \nForging Independence | Building a Nation outlines important regional historical events of the American Revolution\, including the Boston Tea Party\, which happened on the locally built and owned vessel the Dartmouth\, and Grey’s raid\, encompassing the defense of Fort Phoenix\, the siege and burning of Bedford Village\, and the Bombardment of Fairhaven. The installation frames these war-time events within larger state-wide and national arcs\, including the Stamp Tax Crisis\, Battle of Bunker Hill\, Occupation of Boston\, Massachusetts statehood\, the adoption of the State Bill of Rights\, and early activities tied to nation building. What did it mean to discard a system of governance and colonial allegiance and establish a new country? How did people grapple with and make sense of the revolutionary period and what came after? What ideas and tenets became pillars of that era\, how are their legacies felt today\, and what complications or tensions arose in that space of negotiation? \nThe project relies on the Museum’s expansive permanent collection to center and share diverse stories and experiences from Massachusetts\, consider the promises and challenges of the American Revolution\, and makes connections between past and present. The exhibition utilizes artifacts and archival sources to illuminate the stories of a broad range of individuals\, from local merchants who skirted blockades and traded as privateers to the narratives of private citizens and regional residents\, including men\, women and children of different classes\, ages\, ethnic and racial backgrounds\, and status\, immigrants\, Indigenous people\, and enslaved and free people of color. The exhibition includes the voices and stories of those who served in the American militia\, were passionate Revolutionaries\, outright ambivalent about Independence\, or avid British Loyalists.

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary Journey of William Rotch Sr.
DESCRIPTION:A special exhibition of selections from the Historical Graphic Novel Quaker Whaler Traitor Spy! by Dr. Sarah Crabtree\, Illustrated by Melissa Philley. \nWilliam Rotch was one of the unluckiest men of the eighteenth century.  Accused of treason four times by three governments in two decades (1775 – 1795)\, he became a cautionary tale for any who dared dissent.  A member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)\, and thus a pacifist\, he vehemently opposed the wars for independence and empire during the late eighteenth century. But William Rotch was also one of the luckiest men of the eighteenth century.  Whaling was an exceptional industry in that the factory was a floating one.  Ships could be at sea for years at a time\, staffed with a motley crew\, frequenting ports the world over.  Rotch shrewdly used these factors to his advantage\, amassing a fortune by exploiting the very political fragmentation he so adamantly protested. Beginning with the Boston Tea Party\, the Rotches stretched the bounds of acceptable business practice by claiming residency – simultaneously – in three different countries.  This tactic landed Rotch in court almost as frequently as his antiwar stance\, but here too he won acquittal. \nSo was William Rotch a Quaker? A whaler? A traitor?  A spy?  This exhibit invites the viewer – you! – to decide which label best describes him.  Along the way\, we’ll revisit some famous (and infamous!) events and we’ll hear from a few characters you’ve definitely heard of and some maybe you haven’t.  What we hope is that you’ll agree his-story is a way of reapproaching how history is made – a story that is as much about who and what we remember as how and why we remember them.

This exhibition engages with the memories and mythologies embedded in this collection\, calling attention to how we remember the American Revolution and reckon with its legacy. 𝘔𝘺𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 spotlights the deeply personal experiences of individuals\, families\, and communities caught up in extraordinary circumstances\, organized around the themes of Resistance\, Loyalty\, Liberty\, and Memory. DESCRIPTION:The City of Woburn will continue its commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution on Saturday\, June 13\, with a full day of events held in coordination with the City’s annual Flag Day festivities. The schedule includes Revolutionary War reenactments\, a march from the Pocket Park to Woburn Common\, a flag raising\, music\, musket firing display\, a performance reading of the Declaration of Independence\, student banner recognition\, burial ground tours\, a special library exhibition\, and the Kiwanis Flag Day Festival and fireworks. \n10:30 a.m.\, 460 Main Street to Woburn Common: Period reenactors will present a brief performance about the morning of April 19\, 1775\, when the Woburn militia gathered at Fowle Tavern before marching to Lexington. Reenactors will then lead a march from the Pocket Park to the Common\, followed by a flag raising\, city band performance\, and musket firing display. \n11:15 a.m.\, Woburn Common\, 10 Common Street: A short public performance will bring the Declaration of Independence to life through a reading and first-person accounts from period reenactors. \n11:45 a.m.\, Woburn Common\, 10 Common Street: A short ceremony will recognize student banner design winners in coordination with the Woburn Historical Society. \n10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, Woburn Public Library\, 45 Pleasant Street: A rare printing of the Declaration of Independence and other Revolutionary and Civil War artifacts will be on view as part of the exhibition We the People. \n12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.\, First and Second Burial Grounds: Burial ground tours will be offered at the First Burial Ground\, accessed from Park Street\, and the Second Burial Ground\, accessed from Montvale Avenue adjacent to the Peterson School. \n1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.\, Library Field\, 63 Harrison Avenue: The annual Kiwanis Flag Day Festival will include family-friendly activities\, live music\, games\, food trucks\, and fireworks.

SUMMARY:The Spirit of Brimfield - 250 Years of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 13\, 2026\, in conjunction with Brimfield Old Home Day\, our community will gather\, and all are welcome to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary of our freedom and liberty. Hundreds of Brimfield and area residents answered the voluntary call to duty from 1775 and throughout the Revolutionary War. They will be recognized by a series of cemetery tours between 10:30am-1pm where their narrative stories will be told by historians at each of their burial sites. Formal presentations and performances will begin at 2pm on the Town Common bandstand\, we can expect stories of patriotism\, duty\, honor\, and public service. The parade will begin from the public safety complex at 3pm\, proceed around the Town Common\, and conclude in the Brimfield Winery fields where attendees are welcome to take selfies with the parade participants. We expect the Springfield Kiltie Band\, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment\, a helicopter flyover\, the 215th Army Band\, local high school marching band\, Brimfield’s antique fire truck\, and more. Everyone is welcome to enjoy live music and entertainment throughout the day at the Brimfield Winery. Around dusk the bonfire pit will be lit\, while the story of Maj. Gen. Henry Knox’ amazing mission to bring cannons from Ticonderoga to Boston will be narrated. The evening concludes with a fireworks display.

SUMMARY:Brewing Massachusetts: How Beer Shaped the Bay State
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to introduce our most ambitious exhibit ever\, titled “Brewing Massachusetts: How Beer Shaped the Bay State\,” made possible by a grant from Massachusetts 250 and the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT). Through rare artifacts\, photographs\, and documents\, this exhibit will tell the story of Massachusetts brewers from the Pilgrims to the present. This exhibit will be held in a rebuilt Revolutionary era tavern and tickets will be $5. Come see it starting May 30th at 107 Old Main Street in Deerfield at the Indian House Memorial.\nNo state has been more impacted by brewing than Massachusetts. But this story hasn’t been told in one place\, until now. “Brewing Massachusetts” will be open during the 250th anniversary of 1776\, a landmark nationwide event that will shine a spotlight on American history. We want to incorporate the entire state in our celebration of the History of Brewing\, and what better way than to include all of Massachusetts.
