SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the New Bedford Whaling Museum will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today? \nForging Independence | Building a Nation outlines important regional historical events of the American Revolution\, including the Boston Tea Party\, which happened on the locally built and owned vessel the Dartmouth\, and Grey’s raid\, encompassing the defense of Fort Phoenix\, the siege and burning of Bedford Village\, and the Bombardment of Fairhaven. The installation frames these war-time events within larger state-wide and national arcs\, including the Stamp Tax Crisis\, Battle of Bunker Hill\, Occupation of Boston\, Massachusetts statehood\, the adoption of the State Bill of Rights\, and early activities tied to nation building. What did it mean to discard a system of governance and colonial allegiance and establish a new country? How did people grapple with and make sense of the revolutionary period and what came after? What ideas and tenets became pillars of that era\, how are their legacies felt today\, and what complications or tensions arose in that space of negotiation? \nThe project relies on the Museum’s expansive permanent collection to center and share diverse stories and experiences from Massachusetts\, consider the promises and challenges of the American Revolution\, and makes connections between past and present. The exhibition utilizes artifacts and archival sources to illuminate the stories of a broad range of individuals\, from local merchants who skirted blockades and traded as privateers to the narratives of private citizens and regional residents\, including men\, women and children of different classes\, ages\, ethnic and racial backgrounds\, and status\, immigrants\, Indigenous people\, and enslaved and free people of color. The exhibition includes the voices and stories of those who served in the American militia\, were passionate Revolutionaries\, outright ambivalent about Independence\, or avid British Loyalists.

SUMMARY:Lincoln Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Hingham Historical Society invites history lovers everywhere to participate in Hingham’s 49th annual Lincoln Day on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. \nEach year\, Lincoln Day celebrates civic engagement and reflects on the lives and legacies of General Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810) and President Abraham Lincoln (1809 – 1865). Born more than 70 years and 1\,000 miles apart yet with shared Hingham roots\, General Lincoln and President Lincoln served their country in revolutionary ways. They took up leadership roles in times of extreme political and social polarization when questions about the meaning of freedom\, independence\, and liberty divided households\, communities\, and the nation itself. As America’s semiquincentennial year begins – America’s 250th birthday! – Lincoln Day asks us to consider how we can be inspired by the past to serve our communities’ futures. \nLincoln Day Schedule of Events\n10:00am Muster at the Hingham Memorial Bell Tower (90 Main Street)\n10:15am Wreath-laying ceremonies in Hingham Cemetery at the gravesites of General Benjamin Lincoln and Massachusetts’ Civil War governor\, John Albion Andrew.\n11:00 AM Lincoln Day Program begins at Old Ship Church (90 Main Street) featuring a keynote address from Robert J. SUMMARY:Henry Knox Trail 250 - Framingham
DESCRIPTION:On July 4\, 2026\, our nation will celebrate the semiquincentennial anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Leading up to this historic birthday Revolution 250 was created. In keeping with this celebratory campaign\, it is with great enthusiasm that we present the momentous commemoration of this country’s founding\, Knox Trail 250. This sequenced program is designed to represent the Henry Knox Noble Train of Artillery of 1776\, the catalyst for what we now recognize in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Evacuation Day. \nOn the morning of January 10\, 2026\, along the Massachusetts and New York state border\, there will be a ceremony representative of the official Knox handoff that occurred in December before embarking on the historic journey. In Massachusetts\, starting in Great Barrington\, going through over 33 towns\, including locations in New York\, a simulation of the journey would be celebrated in designated hubs. \nThis sequenced parade of regional recognition will incorporate the invitation and participation of town managers\, local historians\, celebrating the commemoration and respective connections in the Noble Trail of Artillery. \nFRAMINGHAM\nSunday\, February 8\, 2026\nThe Village Hall\, Framingham Green \nCAMBRIDGE\nSaturday\, February 28\, 2026\nCambridge Public Library \nROXBURY\nSaturday\, March 7\, 2026\nFirst Church in Roxbury \nBOSTON\nTuesday\, March 17\, 2026\nDorchester Heights

SUMMARY:Tavern Talk: Henry Knox and his Noble Train of Artillery\, a 2-Part Series
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Tavern Tradition — history shared out loud among neighbors. \nSomerville Museum presents a 2-part Tavern Talk with Dan Breen on January 26th and February 9th at Aeronaut Brewing in Somerville. \nPart 1 (1/26): Ethan Allen\, Benedict Arnold and the Gibraltar of North America”\nPart 2 (2/9): “The Noble Train Arrives: Knox\, Washington and the End of the Siege.” \nAs we continue to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolution\, it is time to celebrate the achievements of Henry Knox\, the 25-year old Boston bookseller who\, against considerable odds\, somehow oversaw the transport of 59 pieces of artillery from Fort Ticonderoga across the Hudson\, over the Berkshires and across the length of Massachusetts to the American army camped outside of Boston. But how did those cannons become available in the first place? \nIn the first installment of a two-part series\, we will tell the story of Ticonderoga and its improbable capture\, followed by the arrival of Knox six months later. Then we will begin the epic tale of the journey of the Noble Train\, following it down the ‘Queen of American Lakes'” towards “the River that Flows Both Ways.” \nIn the second part of our commemoration of Knox and the Noble Train\, we will follow the Ticonderoga cannon over the Berkshires\, across the Connecticut River and finally to Dorchester Heights\, where their emplacement would finally drive Lord Howe to abandon Boston. SUMMARY:The Revolutionary Journey of William Rotch Sr.
DESCRIPTION:A special exhibition of selections from the Historical Graphic Novel Quaker Whaler Traitor Spy! by Dr. Sarah Crabtree\, Illustrated by Melissa Philley. \nWilliam Rotch was one of the unluckiest men of the eighteenth century. Accused of treason four times by three governments in two decades (1775 – 1795)\, he became a cautionary tale for any who dared dissent. A member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)\, and thus a pacifist\, he vehemently opposed the wars for independence and empire during the late eighteenth century. But William Rotch was also one of the luckiest men of the eighteenth century. Whaling was an exceptional industry in that the factory was a floating one. Ships could be at sea for years at a time\, staffed with a motley crew\, frequenting ports the world over. Rotch shrewdly used these factors to his advantage\, amassing a fortune by exploiting the very political fragmentation he so adamantly protested. Beginning with the Boston Tea Party\, the Rotches stretched the bounds of acceptable business practice by claiming residency – simultaneously – in three different countries. This tactic landed Rotch in court almost as frequently as his antiwar stance\, but here too he won acquittal. \nSo was William Rotch a Quaker? A whaler? A traitor? A spy? This exhibit invites the viewer – you! – to decide which label best describes him. Along the way\, we’ll revisit some famous (and infamous!) events and we’ll hear from a few characters you’ve definitely heard of and some maybe you haven’t. What we hope is that you’ll agree his-story is a way of reapproaching how history is made – a story that is as much about who and what we remember as how and why we remember them.

SUMMARY:The Barzillai Lew Project - A Duke Ellington Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Forgotten Hero Who Inspired Duke Ellington.\nIn 1942\, the renown Duke Ellington composed a piano piece in Barzillai Lew’s honor\, likely inspired by stories Ellington encountered while studying with the pioneering historian Carter G. Woodson.\nThe musical score of this work\, first retrieved and digitized from the Smithsonian American History Museum for this project\, is the basis for a modern adaptation of that composition.\nJoin us at 7:30pm on February 20\, 2026\, Ellington’s work will be presented in a concert along with several original compositions at the Richard and Nancy Donahue Family Academic Arts Center\, Middlesex Community College\, 240 Central Street in Lowell. \nBarzillai Lew\nBarzillai Lew was born a free Black person on November 5th\, 1743\, in Groton\, Massachusetts\, the son of Primus Lew and Margaret [Lew]. Like his father\, Barzillai became a renown fifer in the colonial regiment of Captain Thomas Farrington.\nAfter serving in the French and Indian War\, he purchased the freedom of Dinah Bowman (1744–1837) and married her in 1768. Dinah was a pianist who had been enslaved in Lexington. She may very well have been the first African-American woman pianist in American history.\nIn May of 1775\, Barzillai Lew enlisted in Captain John Ford’s Company\, the 27th Regiment\, out of Chelmsford. Lew\, along with about 3 dozen other ethnic Africans\, fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17\, 1775.\nWith wages earned from his military service\, the Lew family purchased a large tract of farmland in Dracut\, which is now part of Lowell. They built a house near Varnum Avenue and Zeal Road (named for Barzillai\,) now called Totman Road. After the war\, Lew returned to his farm in Pawtucketville\, where they raised 13 children\, the most famous being the abolitionist\, Lucy Lew. His great grandson is Harry ‘Bucky’ Lew\, the first African American Basketball player

SUMMARY:ArtsThursdays: Revolutionary Teas
DESCRIPTION:Free In-Person Special Event\nArtsThursdays: Revolutionary Teas\nThursday\, February 26\, 5:00–9:00 pm RSVPs encouraged\nEnter at Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology\, 11 Divinity Avenue\, Cambridge \nJoin us for a free\, fun evening at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology—perfect for a date night\, a friends’ outing\, or meeting new people. \nThis special edition of ArtsThursdays explores the revolutionary era in the United States through one of its defining symbols and flashpoints: tea. \nFrom 6:00 to 7:00 pm\, tea historian Bruce Richardson will present the illustrated talk\, “Five Teas that Launched a Revolution.” The presentation will trace the history of five Chinese teas that were tossed into Boston Harbor in 1773—teas that came from the very same East India Company warehouses that supplied the tea caddies of fashionable homes in London and Bath. \nWhile the world knows how Britain’s love of tea has inspired countless “tea things\,” Richardson will remind us that residents of colonial Boston\, Philadelphia\, New York\, and Charleston shared a similar passion for fine furniture\, silver\, and porcelain devoted to their own tea rituals. Their daily cup became a ceremony—a gathering that helped spark a party\, a revolution\, and the birth of a nation. All this commotion over a simple cup of tea! \nDuring the evening\, visitors can:\nSample historic teas enjoyed in 1773 Boston.\nPurchase copies of A Social History of Tea (Benjamin Press\, 2013) by Bruce Richardson and participate in a book signing.\nEnter a free raffle to win museum gifts and membership.\nExplore the Peabody Museum galleries from 5:00 to 9:00 pm\, including Resetting the Table\, an exhibition about food\, power\, status\, and cultural identity. \nFree and open to the public. Let us know you are coming! RSVPs are encouraged\, but walk-in visitors are always welcome. Free event parking at the 52 Oxford Street Garage 4:30–9:30 pm. \nPresented by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology and the Harvard Museums of Science & Culture. \nArtsThursdays is a university-wide initiative supported by Harvard University Committee on the Arts. \nThis event is presented to mark the 250th Anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.

SUMMARY:Knox Trail 250 – Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:On July 4\, 2026\, our nation will celebrate the semiquincentennial anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
