SUMMARY:"Heads of Families and Men of Substance" The Rise of the Merrimack Valley Minute Men
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 6:00/Presentation Begins at 6:30 \nIn October 1774\, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress instructed towns throughout the colony to prepare for imminent conflict with England. In response\, the Merrimack Valley\, in particular\, shifted into a wartime stance\, forming minute companies\, stockpiling weapons\, ammunition\, and supplies\, and setting up a defense network ready to mobilize if British forces advanced from Boston. Join Alexander Cain as he explores the Merrimack Valley’s reaction\, focusing on Andover\, to the British threat and delves into the formation of the Massachusetts militia and the minute-man system just before the battles of Lexington and Concord. \nAlexander Cain is a well-respected and highly sought-after speaker who frequently lectures on the military and social influences of 1775 Massachusetts. He has published multiple research articles that have shed new light on the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\, and the loyalist refugee experience during the American Revolution. Alex has also published two books\, We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War and is the author of the blog and podcast “Historical Nerdery.” Alex directs a Merrimack Valley-based vocational program that introduces high school students to advanced manufacturing and skilled trades careers. He resides in Massachusetts with his wife\, Paula. They have two adult children\, John and Abigail.

SUMMARY:USS Lexington Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special USS Lexington Ceremony commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington\, the historic clash that ignited the American Revolution. On the morning of April 19\, 1775\, colonial militia and British Regulars exchanged the “shot heard ’round the world” on Lexington Green\, marking the very beginning of America’s fight for independence. This annual ceremony honors that legacy – not only remembering the patriots who fell in 1775\, but also celebrating the enduring ties between the Town of Lexington and the five U.S. Navy vessels that proudly bore the name “USS Lexington” in later years. In this Semiquincentennial year\, the commemoration is especially meaningful\, uniting historians\, veterans\, local residents\, and visitors in tribute to 250 years of courage and sacrifice.

SUMMARY:Eve of the American Revolution\, April 1775: What were they thinking?
DESCRIPTION:Continuing our celebration of Patriot’s Week\, join Goodnow Library and Sudbury250 for an in-person event\, interactive event as we dive into what the last few hours would have looked like before America changed forever. \nPete Abair\, local author of the historical fiction\, Each Hath a Hand: A Rebellion at Dawn\, 1775\, will discuss the varying perceptions and motivations of key participants in the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, 250 years ago. As they slept the night before\, few in Massachusetts would have imagined the outbreak of war the next day. For the British Regulars who marched out from Boston to the town militiamen who gathered on Lexington Green and at the North Bridge in Concord\, there was nothing certain about the day ahead of them. It is a story of sympathetic characters on both sides and a tumultuous beginning for a new nation’s rise.

SUMMARY:Robbins Ride\, Acton Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Prescott\, it is thought\, arrived in Acton\, after alarming and leaving Concord\, where he awoke Captain Joseph Robbins\, one of Acton’s militia leaders\, at about 3 in the morning of the 19th. Upon hearing the news\, Captain Robbins had his 13-year-old son saddle up their horse\, whereupon the young boy took off with (or probably without) Prescott across town to alarm Captain Isaac Davis of the Acton Minutemen\, and Francis Faulkner and Deacon Hunt\, of Acton’s other militia unit. \nWe commemorate this heroic deed today as Robbins’ Ride\, and for the purposes of safety and practicality\, we combine the riders into one or two adult rider(s)\, but the rider still makes the rounds to all 4 stops that were alarmed on that fateful early morning in April of 1775\, calling out “The Regulars are out of Boston – gather your units and head to Concord!” \nWe begin at 5PM FRIDAY APRIL 18: \nRobbin’s House site\, Concord Rd\nIsaac Davis House Hayward Rd\,\nFaulkner House\, High Street\,\nLiberty Tree Farm\, Liberty Street. \nOnlookers and public visitors are asked to detour around horse and rider with police escort and use an alternate route to the three locations after the start of the event and allow Minutemen priority in their vehicles first\, from each location.

SUMMARY:Reenactment of the Battle of Lexington
DESCRIPTION:The Lexington Minute Men will conduct the 250th Anniversary Reenactment of the Civilian Evacuation of the Battle of Lexington and the Battle of Lexington on the Lexington Battle Green on Saturday\, April 19\, 2025. \nAccording to the Lexington History Museums\, on the night of April 18\, 1775\, over 700 British soldiers were sent from Boston to Concord to destroy a store of ammunition and other supplies for an anticipated war. As dawn approached on the fateful following morning\, the town militia of Lexington stood in anxious anticipation to stand in their way. The two groups squared off on the town common\, a single\, mysterious shot rang out\, and the British soldiers opened fire. When the smoke cleared\, eight Americans lay dead\, another 10 were wounded\, and a war for independence had begun. \nEach year\, the Town of Lexington and a dedicated corps of reenactors recreate this event in real time on its original site. This year\, the event will take place on the exact anniversary of the battle. \nThe passionate and committed groups of reenactors muster around 5 a.m.\, and the bell in the Belfry will ring and the Battle will commence at 5:15 a.m. \nAttendees should arrive early!

SUMMARY:Revolution History Tour of Andover and North Andover
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 19th for the Revolutionary History Tour Shuttle\, a special collaboration between the North Andover Historical Society and the Andover Center for History and Culture! Embark on an adventure through our shared heritage as we bring our two towns\, once united during the American Revolution\, back together for a day of family-friendly learning and fun. \nThe 1.5 hour bus tour will start at the North Andover Historical Society. The route retraces the path taken by the Militia through North Andover and Andover en route to the battle at Lexington and Concord. View historical homes and sites that stood in 1775. The 18th century owners of these homes helped shape our nation’s journey to independence. Our experienced guides from the NAHS and ACHC will share captivating stories and anecdotes about our local connections to the revolution. \nIn North Andover the bus will stop briefly for a tour of the historic kitchen and dining room at the Timothy Johnson House where you can enjoy a glass of lemonade. The bus continues on to Andover viewing more historic homes and stopping briefly at the west Andover Blanchard Upton House for an outdoor tour and a glass of apple cider. From there\, the bus returns to the North Andover Historical Society.
