SUMMARY:The Revolutionary Journey of William Rotch Sr.
DESCRIPTION:A special exhibition of selections from the Historical Graphic Novel Quaker Whaler Traitor Spy! by Dr. Sarah Crabtree\, Illustrated by Melissa Philley. \nWilliam Rotch was one of the unluckiest men of the eighteenth century.  Accused of treason four times by three governments in two decades (1775 – 1795)\, he became a cautionary tale for any who dared dissent.  A member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)\, and thus a pacifist\, he vehemently opposed the wars for independence and empire during the late eighteenth century. But William Rotch was also one of the luckiest men of the eighteenth century.  Whaling was an exceptional industry in that the factory was a floating one.  Ships could be at sea for years at a time\, staffed with a motley crew\, frequenting ports the world over.  Rotch shrewdly used these factors to his advantage\, amassing a fortune by exploiting the very political fragmentation he so adamantly protested. Beginning with the Boston Tea Party\, the Rotches stretched the bounds of acceptable business practice by claiming residency – simultaneously – in three different countries.  This tactic landed Rotch in court almost as frequently as his antiwar stance\, but here too he won acquittal. \nSo was William Rotch a Quaker? A whaler? A traitor?  A spy?  This exhibit invites the viewer – you! – to decide which label best describes him.  Along the way\, we’ll revisit some famous (and infamous!) events and we’ll hear from a few characters you’ve definitely heard of and some maybe you haven’t.  What we hope is that you’ll agree his-story is a way of reapproaching how history is made – a story that is as much about who and what we remember as how and why we remember them.

SUMMARY:Open House with Martin House Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Colonial Dames of Massachusetts invite all to a sneak preview of the Martin House Farm\, before its summer opening.   Sometime between 1728 and 1734\, John Martin’s son\, John Martin the younger\, built a house for his wife and eight children consisting of a one-room dwelling with a loft above and an outside chimney.  Two additions were added in 1814 and in the late 19th century. \nVisitors today can enjoy the house which has not been physically altered since the last additions. It is now filled with collections from the Martin family who lived on the farm for 200 continuous years. The property also includes two barns and cultivated fields surrounded by dry stone walls and woodlands. DESCRIPTION:DUXBURY\, MA — The Art Complex Museum (ACM) will open Under Construction: America at 250\, an outdoor juried sculpture exhibition\, on Sunday\, June 14\, 2026 — Flag Day — as part of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration. The exhibition will remain on view through August 29\, 2027\, on the museum’s thirteen-acre campus at 189 Alden Street in Duxbury\, Massachusetts.\nOrganized by ACM Deputy Director and Contemporary Curator Craig Bloodgood\, Under Construction: America at 250 is nearly two years in the making and represents the largest exhibition Bloodgood has developed in his 28 years at the museum. Following an open call issued in fall 2025\, 16 projects were selected from artists working across sculpture\, installation\, textiles\, found materials\, and mixed media. Fourteen works will be installed across the museum campus; two additional works will be placed at nearby community sites — the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society and The Center — bringing the exhibition into the broader landscape of the town.\n“The title Under Construction speaks to the idea that America is still being shaped\,” said Bloodgood. “At 250 years\, the country is not finished\, and we wanted an exhibition that could hold both celebration and critique. Rather than presenting one answer\, we wanted the exhibition to open up many ways of thinking about America now.”\nThe works on view range from the pointed to the poetic. Michael Alfano’s Big Money examines finance’s role in American life; Gary Orlinsky’s Stress Test confronts the pressures facing democratic institutions; and Kasia Ozga’s We The People and Jackie Reeves’s To Uphold take up belonging\, identity\, and civic responsibility. Other works — including Josh Urso’s Reaping and Sowing and Andy Moerlein’s suspended stones — speak to cycles of damage\, renewal\, and possibility.\nBecause the exhibition is installed outdoors for over a year\, visitors can expect each visit to offer something new as the works change with the seasons. Several pieces invite direct participation\, making the experience interactive as well as contemplative.\n“Art has always been how communities make sense of who they are\,” said Peter A. Mello\, executive director of the Art Complex Museum. “This summer\, as our nation pauses to take stock of its story — its promise\, its struggles\, and its continuing work — the Art Complex is proud to provide a gathering place for that reflection.”

DESCRIPTION:Now that 2026 is upon us\, many Americans will have been conjuring up distant memories of high school history lessons – Bunker Hill and Saratoga\, George Washington at Valley Forge\, the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown to the tune of “The World Turned Upside Down.” Plymouth\, though\, is not a name that usually pops into people’s minds when hearing the words “American Revolution.” The Revolution\, though\, was far more than generals or battles. Plymouth\, like every small town in the thirteen colonies\, sent its men off to war. In choosing to follow those generals and fight in those battles\, they made the Revolution possible. Plymouth also saw some of its own vehemently protest the war; they too paid a price for their principles. \nHow can we retrieve the experiences\, the stories\, of these men? Some\, at least\, of the answers can be found in Loyalist Memorials & Revolutionary War Pension Applications. \nPlease join Peggy Baker as she explores the history of these extraordinary primary source documents and shares some of the stories of the Plymoutheans who submitted them\, as Plymouth remembers the Revolution during its 250th anniversary year.

DESCRIPTION:Explore objects and archival materials from Historic New England’s vast collection and participate in hands-on activities to learn about the deeply personal experiences of individuals\, families\, and communities caught up in extraordinary circumstances. Participants will consider what it was like to live through these historic events and to contribute in small and not-so-small ways to the shaping of a new nation. \nAges 7-14 \nThere must be a minimum of 5 children registered for programs to run. Programs are limited to 24 people. \nFull payment is due at the time of registration and is non-refundable (unless program is cancelled by us due to under-enrollment). \nNo registrations will be accepted on the day of the program. One adult per family admitted free. \nIt is not a drop-off program – children must be accompanied by an adult. Strollers and backpack carriers are not permitted in the house museums.

SUMMARY:Dancing in the Revolution: The Politics of Dance
DESCRIPTION:In the colonial period\, and during the revolution\, dance and music became intertwined with politics\, religion and economics. The careers of William Turner\, a dancing master in Boston\, and Thomas Pike\, a dancing master in Philadelphia\, affected each other\, and were affected by the times. Jacob and Nancy Bloom will share primary sources that reveal the course of these masters’ lives\, and illustrate how important dance was to colonial America. They also include information on Mary Cowley\, a dancing mistress in Newport\, Rhode Island\, who managed to avoid political entanglements\, and taught dancing to the Americans\, British\, and French.
