DESCRIPTION:How\, why & where the first land battle of the American Revolution could have happened at Salem’s North Bridge in February 1775 instead of in Lexington and at Concord’s North Bridge on April 19th. \nLess than two months before April 19th in 1775\, the American Revolution’s first land battle could have taken place in Marblehead and/or Salem instead of in Lexington and Concord\, in the exact same scenario. The “Salem Alarm” event that occurred in Salem on February 26th\, 1775 and later became known as “Leslie’s Retreat\,” is now quite familiar — especially after the big 250th anniversary reenactment a few weeks ago\, and several educational events about it. \nHere in Danvers on April 23\, an illustrated program will explore the human side of the near-miss episode\, along with its geographical and social context. \nWho was the “Leslie” of “Leslie’s Retreat” ? — Why did he and his Regular Army troops march through the crowded and volatile metropolis of Marblehead to march into Salem? — And where in Marblehead did they land? \nDetail of a painting by J.O.J. Today\, the House\, still bearing scars from the fight\, is at the heart of the Society’s regional history museum\, offering guided tours and engaging exhibits that highlight the lasting impacts of the American Revolution and Arlington’s broader history. \nOn both Saturday\, April 19\, and Monday\, April 21\, the Arlington Historical Society at the Jason Russell House will be open for FREE admission from 11am to 4pm\, with a special unveiling of UNTOLD STORIES – The Battle of Menotomy\, Voices of the Overlooked\, & Centennial Celebrations exhibition. \nThis commemorative exhibition aims to highlight the Battle of Menotomy as an “Untold Story.” It explores the perspectives of often-overlooked communities involved in the battle and examines how the people of the Commonwealth commemorated\, memorialized\, and celebrated the important anniversaries of this pivotal event\, as the first battle of the American Revolutionary War.

DESCRIPTION:The British Regular Army was one of the most powerful military forces in the world in the 18th century. But in the course of one fateful day\, their luck changed. On April 19\, 1775\, 750 soldiers set out on a grueling 40-mile march\, and walked straight into a revolution. In Lexington and Concord\, they fought with locals intent on thwarting their mission\, and fled back to Boston chased by thousands of American soldiers. Munroe Tavern became an important resting point on their journey. Stop by and meet members of His Majesty’s recreated 10th Regiment of Foot to see military drilling and learn more about the lives of our forgotten foes.

At the time of the Revolutionary War\, it was owned by Loyalists\, Dr. Charles and Elizabeth Russell\, who fled to Antigua when the war began. \nGropius House\, 1938\n68 Baker Bridge Road\, Lincoln\, MA \nHome \n\nExplore a revolution! Walter Gropius\, founder of the German design school known as the Bauhaus\, was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. SUMMARY:North Bridge Program (Minute Man NHP)
DESCRIPTION:Commemorate Patriots’ Day with a National Park Service program marking the “shot heard round the world.” \nOn April 19\, 1775 British Regular soldiers search the town of Concord\, Massachusetts for stockpiles of illegal military supplies. When nearly 200 Regulars crossed Concord’s North Bridge and headed for the farm of militia Colonel James Barrett\, they left 96 men to guard the important river crossing. Meanwhile\, hundreds of local militia soldiers gathered on the hillside opposing the bridge. Those soldiers from Concord\, Lincoln\, Acton\, Bedford\, Westford\, and elsewhere watched as the British searched their homes and eventually lit fires to burn military supplies. Afraid the Regulars would burn the town\, the militia decided to act. They marched down the long causeway to a confrontation with British Soldiers guarding the bridge and ignited the American Revolution. SUMMARY:Patriots Day Remembrance & Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION:Every year on Patriots Day\, the members of the Danvers Alarm List Company gather to honor the brave men from Danvers who made the ultimate sacrifice at the Jason Russell House on April 19th\, 1775\, by participating in a special mini-marathon. \nThis year\, in commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of Patriots Day\, we’re expanding our programming. For the first time\, we’ll offer Trolley transportation\, allowing not only our reenactors but also members of the public to join us at each of our historic stops. Our knowledgeable reenactors will share the story of the 16-mile march made to the Battle of Menotomy and the lives of the men we lost that day. \nAt each stop of the graves and monuments dedicated to the seven Danvers men\, we will hold a brief ceremony and a volley salute. Reenactors will also bring history to life with engaging spoken dialogue aboard the Trolleys. \nTrolleys will pick-up and drop-off at the Rebecca Nurse Homestead. There is plenty of parking available but once we leave the Homestead at 7:50am we will not be returning until around 12:30pm\, so please keep this in mind. (We will have portable toilets available at the Nurse Homestead before departure and upon return.) \nLIST OF STOPS (times could vary slightly the day of)\nDepart from Nurse Homestead at 149 Pine Street\, Danvers at 7:50am (boarding will begin at 7:30am) \n8:00am – Training Field (Centre Street Danvers). The Village Training Field on Centre Street was given to the town by Deacon Nathaniel Ingersoll in 1709 as a training place. A marker at the Training Field stands as a memorial to the seven Danvers men who died on April 19\, 1775\, in Menotomy (Arlington) \n8:40am – Jacobs Gravesite (Edgehill Road Peabody). Henry Jacobs was one of the Danvers men who fell on April 19. He is buried in a family cemetery. At that time\, Peabody was part of Danvers. \n9:30am – Old South Burial Ground (Main Street Peabody). The South Burial Ground contains the graves of four Danvers men who died on April 19: Ebenezer Goldthwaite\, George Southwick\, Samuel Cook\, and Benjamin Daland. \n10:00am – Lexington Monument (Washington St. Peabody) (This stop will be the only stop with access to bathrooms until the Nurse Homestead) There will be a ceremony at the monument and a short gathering at the Bell Inn Tavern. \n11:40am – Hutchinson Home Site Marker (Water Street Danvers). Capt. Israel Hutchinson commanded a Minute company that fought in Menotomy. Hutchinson lived in a home on Water Street in Danversport\, which is no longer standing. The bodies of the Danvers dead were brought back to this house on April 20\, 1775. A granite marker marks the location of the house. \n11:50am – Reuben Keniston Grave – Leach Burial Ground (Elliot Street Danvers). Ruben Keniston was a Beverly man who marched to Menotomy with Capt. Israel Hutchinson’s company. He was killed on April 19th. \n12:25pm – Nurse Homestead Cemetery (Pine Street Danvers). The cemetery at the Nurse House contains the graves of Revolutionary War veterans Francis Nurse (great grandson of Rebecca) and Matthew Putnam. (There will be portable toilets at this location) \nSpectators are welcome to join us at any of our stops for FREE\, the Trolley tour tickets are $25 per person and are very limited space.

SUMMARY:Arlington250: Battle of Menotomy 250th Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:At 2pm on Sunday\, April 20th\, the Town of Arlington will be joined by the Menotomy Minuteman and participants from many historical reenactment groups to reenact the Battle of Menotomy. Beginning at Mass Ave and Grove Street in Arlington\, this ‘running’ battle will stretch nearly one mile of Mass Ave\, ending at Medford Street. Spectators will watch several significant battle engagements. Spectators are only allowed to watch on the northern side of Mass Ave. \nAbout the Battle of Menotomy:\nThe Battle of Menotomy was the longest and bloodiest engagement of April 19th\, 1775. On that fateful day\, Menotomy (now Arlington) was a crossroads village of about 400 farmers\, millers\, tavern keepers\, and their families. Here 79 companies of minutemen from 16 towns\, 3800 militiamen in all\, surrounded and engaged His Majesty’s troops on their retreat from Concord and Lexington.
