DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, Needham residents helped repel British attacks on Lexington and Concord. The East Needham Militia’s 12.6-mile march to join the battle started at the Townsend Green (Nehoiden and Central Ave) and ended in Arlington by the Jason Russell House (which still stands). The fighting in Arlington was some of the heaviest of the day\, and five of Needham’s own gave their lives in the first battle to create our nation.\nFor those up who want to see the actual route but not walk it (there is a group walking the 12.6 miles)\, the bus tour may be for you! The bus and tour guide will depart from the Needham History Center & Museum at 1:30 PM. We plan to arrive at the Jason Russell House around 2:45pm – just as the walkers are arriving.\nAt our destination\, we will tour the Jason Russell House with its many musket ball strikes\, commemorate the sacrifice our fellow townspeople made\, and enjoy a packed lunch.\nRegister today at needhamhistory.org. Embark on an adventure through our shared heritage as we bring our two towns\, once united during the American Revolution\, back together for a day of family-friendly learning and fun. \nThe 1.5 hour bus tour will start at the North Andover Historical Society. The route retraces the path taken by the Militia through North Andover and Andover en route to the battle at Lexington and Concord. View historical homes and sites that stood in 1775. The 18th century owners of these homes helped shape our nation’s journey to independence. Our experienced guides from the NAHS and ACHC will share captivating stories and anecdotes about our local connections to the revolution. \nIn North Andover the bus will stop briefly for a tour of the historic kitchen and dining room at the Timothy Johnson House where you can enjoy a glass of lemonade. The bus continues on to Andover viewing more historic homes and stopping briefly at the west Andover Blanchard Upton House for an outdoor tour and a glass of apple cider. From there\, the bus returns to the North Andover Historical Society.

DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

SUMMARY:Townsend's Re-enactment of the March to Concord
DESCRIPTION:We invite YOU to join us in re-enacting part of the Townsend Minutemen’s March to Concord. \nOn April 19 1775 a cannon was fired on the Town Common to summon the Townsend Minutemen; word had just been received that the British regulars had marched on Concord to capture the arms and ammunition which the local militia had collected there. \n73 Townsend men assembled and marched to Concord that afternoon. \nThere were two companies -the North Company\, commanded by Captain Samuel Douglas\, and the South Company\, commanded by Captain James Hosley. \nIn honor and memory of these 73 Townsend Minutemen we will fire a cannon\, calling all to “arms”. We will then “march” down the Squannacook River Rail Trail to the Reed Homestead\, where there will be activities\, refreshments and a short presentation about Townsend’s history. The Townsend Historical Society will also provide 73 wooden muskets to march with and keep as souvenirs – first come first served!

DESCRIPTION:The Agawam Historical Association will host an 18th century encampment and militia muster with the 25th Continental Regiment and Green Valley Homestead reenactment groups at the historic Thomas Smith House\, 251 North West Street\, Feeding Hills on Saturday\, April 19\, 2025\, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Shot Heard Round the World\, and the call to arms responding to the 19 April 1775 battles of Lexington and Concord\, \nThe day’s events will include children’s activities\, demonstrations of blacksmithing\, tinsmithing\, open fire cooking\, textile arts\, and musket drills. Attendees will be able to “volunteer” for military service and drill with the 25th Continental Regiment\, who will provide instruction with wooden muskets. \nThe National Register-listed Thomas Smith House\, which had been standing for nearly two decades when the events being commemorated took place\, will be open for tours\, as well its preserved 1920s garage. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

This event will commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the sixty men from South Dedham (now Norwood) who answered the alarm of April 19\, 1775. Twenty of these men are interred in Old Parish Cemetery. Norwood’s Tilton Carillon in Norwood’s Town Hall will sound the alarm at 10:00am as Norwood’s Colonial Boys fife and drum corps lead the procession to the Old Parish Cemetery to place flowers on the graves of Patriots interred there. The public is invited to join the procession from Town Hall to the Cemetery.

The Needham Militia’s 12.6 mile march to join the battle started at the Townsend Green (Nehoiden and Central Ave) and ended in Arlington by the Jason Russell House (which still stands). The fighting in Arlington was some of the heaviest of the day\, and five of Needham’s own gave their lives in the first battle to create our nation.\nFor those up to the challenge\, lace up your sneakers and join your fellow residents on Saturday\, April 19\, as we walk the 12.6 mile route from Needham to Arlington. At our destination\, we will tour the Jason Russell House with its many musket ball strikes\, commemorate the sacrifice our fellow townspeople made\, and enjoy a packed lunch.\nRegister today at needhamhistory.org. SUMMARY:Reenactment of the Battle of Lexington
DESCRIPTION:The Lexington Minute Men will conduct the 250th Anniversary Reenactment of the Civilian Evacuation of the Battle of Lexington and the Battle of Lexington on the Lexington Battle Green on Saturday\, April 19\, 2025. \nAccording to the Lexington History Museums\, on the night of April 18\, 1775\, over 700 British soldiers were sent from Boston to Concord to destroy a store of ammunition and other supplies for an anticipated war. As dawn approached on the fateful following morning\, the town militia of Lexington stood in anxious anticipation to stand in their way. The two groups squared off on the town common\, a single\, mysterious shot rang out\, and the British soldiers opened fire. When the smoke cleared\, eight Americans lay dead\, another 10 were wounded\, and a war for independence had begun. \nEach year\, the Town of Lexington and a dedicated corps of reenactors recreate this event in real time on its original site. This year\, the event will take place on the exact anniversary of the battle. \nThe passionate and committed groups of reenactors muster around 5 a.m.\, and the bell in the Belfry will ring and the Battle will commence at 5:15 a.m. \nAttendees should arrive early!
