DESCRIPTION:Join us at 14 Beacon for a special tour of the CLA’s new in-person exhibition with New England’s Hidden Histories Project Director and “Sacred Rebellion” curator\, Dr. Tricia Peone. \nThe exhibition features many treasures from the CLA’s collections: sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters created by Massachusetts Congregationalists during and after the American Revolution. These objects reveal how Congregationalists understood their moral obligations to each other and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. \nAttendees will view the exhibition with the curator\, learn more about the objects on display\, and gain a deeper understanding of the stories behind the exhibition. The discussion will also explore the unfinished business of the Revolution and the meaning of its legacy today. \nSpace is limited. Prior to joining the CLA\, she was a research scholar at Historic New England for the Recovering New England’s Voices project. She has also previously worked as the public programs director at New Hampshire Humanities\, a university lecturer teaching classes on the Salem witch trials\, early New England\, and public history\, and as a researcher for cultural heritage organizations. She holds a PhD in history from the University of New Hampshire with a specialization in the early modern Atlantic world and history of science.

DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

An unsung hero best known for authoring America the Beautiful\, Bates was deeply committed to the beauty and principles of our country. This film is especially appropriate as statewide Massachusetts 250 commemorations lead up to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026\, offering hope for the healing of a polarized America. Various state and federal commemorations are already underway for America250. \nAmerica The Beautiful may be America’s most beloved song. The words are found in nearly every hymn book in the country. It celebrates our natural beauty and makes a powerful appeal for justice\, brotherhood and inclusion. It has been sung at inaugurations\, demonstrations\, and sporting events\, in operatic\, folk\, country and other styles. Yet few know about the fascinating life of Katharine Lee Bates\, the Falmouth-born Wellesley college professor who wrote the lyrics to the song. Her story should not be forgotten\, nor its context. DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the only American town that made bobbin lace at scale in our early republic was Ipswich Massachusetts? Alexander Hamilton’s papers record that over 40\,000 yards of lace were made in one single year. Lace was an important political\, economic\, and fashion item in the 18th century. Hannah Adams the historian said about lace: “During the American revolutionary war\, I learned to weave bobbin lace\, which was then saleable\, and much more profitable to me than spinning\, sewing or knitting\, which had previously been my employment.” \nJoin us at the Ipswich Museum to learn about how bobbin lace is made\, the cultural and economic impacts of lace\, and see artifacts of the Ipswich Lace industry era. We expect to have the largest gathering of lacemakers in Ipswich for over 200 years\, some demonstrating the traditional Ipswich lace styles and others with contemporary lace examples. We are also part of the Gather Fiber Symposium series running in the Boston area this April.

DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.
