DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

The “Salem Alarm” event that occurred in Salem on February 26th\, 1775 and later became known as “Leslie’s Retreat\,” is now quite familiar — especially after the big 250th anniversary reenactment a few weeks ago\, and several educational events about it. \nHere in Danvers on April 23\, an illustrated program will explore the human side of the near-miss episode\, along with its geographical and social context. \nWho was the “Leslie” of “Leslie’s Retreat” ? — Why did he and his Regular Army troops march through the crowded and volatile metropolis of Marblehead to march into Salem? — And where in Marblehead did they land? \nDetail of a painting by J.O.J. Lexington Historical Society\, in partnership with the Lexington Minute Men and His Majesty’s 10th Regiment of Foot\, welcome all willing participants for an interactive reenactment of the Battle of Lexington! Participants will be trained by members of the Lexington Minute Men or His Majesty’s 10th Regiment of Foot before getting the chance to march onto the historic Lexington Battle Green and reenact the first battle of the American Revolution. Guardians are encouraged to drop off their children for training and return to view the battle reenactment. After the battle\, participants will have a chance to interact with members of both the Lexington Minute Men and His Majesty’s 10th Regiment of Foot. \nChoose from 10:00 – 11:15 AM or 12:30 – 1:45 PM. \n$10 per child”

No matter how long you’ve lived in Lexington\, there is still plenty for your kids to discover! Have them test their clue-solving and observation skills with a Revolutionary-themed scavenger hunt that takes them to sites around the Lexington Green. Fun and an official completion certificate for all ages! Start and end at the Depot or Buckman Tavern. Be sure to stop back before 4 p.m. to claim your prize! \nChildren under 12 must be accompanied by an adult (the hunt is self-guided).

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 21\, 2025 (Patriot’s Day Holiday)\nOpen House: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM \nHistoric New England invites you walk Lincoln’s trails and visit two of its properties in Lincoln\, Massachusetts: \n– The Codman Estate\, home to five generations of the Chambers/Russell/Codman family.\n– The Walter Gropius House\, home to a revolutionary architect. \nCodman Estate\, c. 1740\n34 Codman Road\, Lincoln\, MA\nhttps://www.historicnewengland.org/property/codman-estate/\nHome to five generations of the Chambers/Russell/Codman family (1708 – 1968)\, in the 18th century the estate was the largest farm in the area with the largest number of enslaved people laboring on it. At the time of the Revolutionary War\, it was owned by Loyalists\, Dr. Charles and Elizabeth Russell\, who fled to Antigua when the war began. \nGropius House\, 1938\n68 Baker Bridge Road\, Lincoln\, MA \nHome \n\nExplore a revolution! Walter Gropius\, founder of the German design school known as the Bauhaus\, was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Modest in scale\, the 1938 Gropius family home was revolutionary in impact. In keeping with Bauhaus philosophy\, every aspect of the house and its surrounding landscape was planned for maximum efficiency and simplicity of design. \nThese two remarkable properties will be open to the public from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Monday\, April 21\, 2025. Docents will be on site to share information and answer questions. Admission is FREE\, although donations are always appreciated! \nGetting there:\n– Both houses are within walking distance of Lincoln’s MBTA Commuter Rail Station (Fitchburg line). Between Thursday\, April 17 and Tuesday\, April 22\, 2025\, special trail markers starting from the station will lead you on public walking trails through the woods to both houses. Experience Paul Revere-inspired poems\, Arlington’s revolutionary history\, and Cyrus Dallin’s 57-year monument battle\, brought to life by Arlington locals! \nThis free\, family-friendly program will feature live readings of our two favorite Paul Revere themed poems – one by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and the other by Cyrus Dallin himself. Learn about the Battle of Menotomy and imagine what it was like on that tumultuous day in 1775. Hear the fascinating story of Dallin’s battle to complete his famous monument to Paul Revere in Boston’s North End. Experience a beautiful small-scale cast of the statue in the east garden\, and venture into the Museum to view a rare prototype. \nMonday\, April 21\, 10:00 AM\nPatriots Day Celebration\nWhittemore Park/Cyrus Dallin Art Museum\n611 Massachusetts Avenue\nArlington\, MA 02474 \nEvent schedule:\n10-11 AM – Presentations in the Park (bring a chair and/or blanket)\n11-12 PM – Museum open house \nFollowing the program\, head to Town Hall where Paul Revere and William Dawes arrive at noon!
