SUMMARY:Revolutionary Kinship: Sustaining Family Through Wartime Divisions
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid event. FREE for MHS Members. $10 per person fee (in person). No charge for virtual attendees or Card to Culture participants (EBT\, WIC\, and ConnectorCare). The in-person reception starts at 5:00 and the program will begin at 6:00. \nThe American Revolution had a profound impact on families\, with some ideas and experiences dramatically altered and some surprisingly durable. Conflicting beliefs about the future of the nation caused familial rifts\, and many lost friends and loved ones to battle and plunder. Enslaved people simultaneously broadened ideas about family in response to the violence of slavery and evaluated whether independence would keep their kin safer from future violence. Gender roles were both everchanging in the circumstances of war as women ran businesses\, handled material needs of war\, and faced new childcare situations\, but also remained constant in many ways. As a result of change and continuity\, families included stepfamilies and single parents\, relationships across plantations\, and transcended biological connections. In this program\, panelists will consider how the American Revolution both disrupted family arrangements and brought new formations of kinship while retaining many of the same structures.

DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

DESCRIPTION:Join the National Park Service at Adams National Historical Park on Saturday\, June 14\, for a special event following the footsteps of the Adams family as they witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill 250 years ago during the American Revolution. This event will be held at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill (John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces)\, located at 141 Franklin St.\, Quincy\, MA. \nIn the Footsteps of the Adamses: Penn’s Hill Guided Walks – 9:30am and 11:00am \nJoin park rangers for guided walks to the top of Penn’s Hill. Walks begin at the Adams Farm and proceed uphill to the Abigail Adams Cairn. There\, stand alongside Abigail Adams\, portrayed by Audrey Stuck-Girard\, as she tells of the danger and distress that the Adamses experienced before and during the Battle of Bunker Hill. The walk is half a mile uphill\, with uneven terrain\, limited shade\, steep inclines\, and traffic crossings. Attendees are advised to bring water and dress appropriately for early summer weather. \n“The decisive Day is come on which the fate of America depends”: Aftermath of the Battle – 1:00-3:00pm \nExperience the aftermath of the battle and its effect on the Adamses and their community with special programming at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. Step into the moment of uncertainty faced by the household following the battle. Converse with Abigail Adams\, but don’t be taken aback if she mistakes you for some of the many family members\, neighbors\, in-laws\, servants\, messengers\, and children underfoot at the farm in June 1775. Meet a militiaman\, portrayed by Michael Lepage\, traveling the Old Coast Road and learn more about the battle from his perspective. \nLegacy and Commemoration: The Adamses\, Quincy\, and the Battle of Bunker Hill 250 Years Later – 3:30pm \nReflect on the legacy of the Battle of Bunker Hill during a special ranger talk on the grounds of the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. Learn more about the commemoration of the battle\, Quincy community ties to the Bunker Hill Monument\, and the role of the historical record and public memory in the telling of the Adamses’ experiences during the battle. \nAll events will take place at or start from the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill (the John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces)\, located at 141 Franklin St.\, Quincy\, MA. Street parking is available at the site in addition to the validated parking at the Visitor Center at 1250 Hancock St.\, Quincy\, MA\, a one-mile walk from the Adams Farm. Visitors may also park at the Lincoln-Hancock Community School at 300 Granite St.\, Quincy\, MA\, a 0.6-mile walk from the Adams Farm. The Adams Farm is accessible by the MBTA Red Line via the Quincy Adams (0.5 miles) and Quincy Center stations (one mile). Parking and transportation details are available on the park website. This event is weather and staffing dependent. Alerts and updates are available on the park website and social media. \nThe Adams National Historical Park Visitor Center and historic Adams homes are open Thursdays through Sundays\, June 5 through October 31. Guided and self-guided tours are available. Tour reservations can be acquired on a first-come\, first-served basis at the Visitor Center at 1250 Hancock St. in Quincy. DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

The performance will take place at Estabrook Auditorium in the Cary Memorial Building. \nThe concert program includes:\n• Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto in G major for Solo Violin\, Strings and Continuo\, Op. 3 “L’Estro Armonico”\, No. 3\, RV 310 (1711)\n• Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major\, K. 218 (1775)\n• Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata No. 3 in Eb major for Violin and Piano\, Op. 12\, No. 3 (1797-1798)\n• Johann Sebastian Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major for Violin\, Two Recorders\, Strings and Continuo\, BWV 1049 (1721) \nBased in Lexington\, Massachusetts since 1984\, Lexington Strings are musicians Letitia Hom\, Yukiko Ueno Egozy\, Michael Valdez and Vida Baterina Hom. \nMs. Hom plays a violin originally commissioned by and made for Roman Totenberg in 1982. Created by luthier Guy Rabut in New York City\, the violin is patterned after Mr. Totenberg’s 1736 Giuseppe “del Gesù” Guarneri violin made in Cremona\, Italy. \nThis program is made possible by the generous donors to the Cary Library Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:The Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum commemorates the anniversary of the American Revolution with an outdoors concert series of period and revolution-inspired music\, The Revolution in Concert\, held in the Museum’s sunken garden.\nTim Eriksen\, leader in the “shape-note” tradition\, experimentalist and ethnomusicologist\, opens the series on June 11th at 6:30pm\, with traditional ballads from the Appalachians to the Pioneer Valley and original pieces that have been described as “magical realism in song.”\nWith a PhD in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University\, Eriksen has taught courses in American and World Music at Dartmouth College\, Amherst College and the University of Minnesota and published scholarship on early New England music in connection to 19th century abolitionism\, apocalyptic theology\, technology and the birth of science fiction. As frontman of the legendary folk- noise outfit Cordelia’s Dad\, Eriksen is the only singer/songwriter to have shared a stage with both Kurt Cobain and Doc Watson.

Lesser known is his role as an advocate for organized healthcare for the poor and needy. Both he and his brother John advanced American medicine during the Revolutionary and Early Republic eras. In the early 1800s\, John’s son Dr. John Collins Warren would build upon those ideals through his own role in co-founding the Massachusetts General Hospital. \nJoin us in person or online as author and historian Samuel Forman\, MD\, explores the lives of these three men and their continued influence on current health care.

SUMMARY:The Plight of Loyalists in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:It’s been said that history is written by the victors\, so it’s not surprising that the story of those loyal to the Crown in the American colonies is not as widely known as that of the Patriots. \nAs the drumbeat to independence grew louder\, Loyalists faced their Patriot neighbors’ scorn and also the agonizing decision of whether or not to flee their towns and homes. \nVarious historians have estimated that between 60\,000 and 100\,000 people fled the colonies by the time “America’s first civil war” ended. \nDr. Kerpelman will present a picture of how ordinary Massachusetts Loyalists and their Patriot neighbors interacted with one another during that fraught time between the 1750’s and the 1790’s. \nA brief tour of the 1699 Isaac Winslow House is included.
