During the Siege of Boston in 1775\, Chelsea served as a landing site for refugees fleeing the city\, offering shelter\, protection\, and critical support to displaced families. It also played a strategic role by enabling General George Washington’s army to monitor British activity in the harbor. \nJoin us on Saturday\, July 26\, 2025\, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.\, at Washington Park (428 Washington Avenue)\, across from the historic Thomas Pratt Mansion (also known as the Washington Pratt House) where General Washington reportedly stayed multiple times. Washington Returns to Chelsea is free and open to the public. \nThe event features a special appearance by George Washington reenactor John Koopman on horseback\, along with Leon Brooks and Leon Vaughn\, two African American reenactors portraying members of the Marblehead Regiment\, recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans to the American Revolution. \nAt 3:00 p.m.\, Lee Farrington will lead a walking tour through the area. Lee is a community historian who has created historic tours of Chelsea’s Prattville and Cary Square neighborhoods. \nSupported by Meet Boston’s Mini-Grant Program\, this event is part of Chelsea’s ongoing MA250 programming\, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. A rideable dolphin and elephant\, courtesy of local sculptor Jeff Briggs\, along with a bouncy castle\, pirate boat with water guns\, plus water\, sand and craft tables await. \nThis free program runs from 10 am to 1 pm thanks to generous sponsorship from the Institution for Savings and the Local Cultural Council. \nLooking ahead\, in September\, the museum is pleased to partner with Imagine Studios on a fascinating project to burn and carve out of a pine log and shape into a 20 foot long mishoon (dugout canoe) using traditional methods. Led by Imagine Studios\, Darius Coombs of the Mashpee Wampanoag and Jonathan Petty of the Aquinnah Wampanoag will carve over successive weekends. DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a free program exploring The Umbrella Arts Center’s outdoors public art ramble\, Weaving an Address\, a site-specific exhibition of work by prominent Black artists commemorating colonial-era Black residents of Concord’s famed Walden Woods. \nOn Saturday\, July 19 at 3PM\, curator and artist Marla McLeod will lead a guided tour of the artwork installed at Brister’s Hill in Walden Woods\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved before Thoreau. \nThe tour will be followed at 4:30PM by refreshments and a panel discussion back at The Umbrella Arts Center (40 Stow Street\, Concord\, MA) with McLeod in dialogue with historian Elise Lemire\, author of Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts\, who was recently a subject of the new international documentary\, Concord’s Secret History\, just released on over 500 PBS stations. Saturday’s discussion will examine the “journey from archive to art\,” and Lemire’s scholarly research that fueled Weaving’s creative installations. \nPart of the town’s Revolution250 celebrations\, this program is co-presented by The Umbrella Arts Center\, The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House: Concord’s African American History Museum. DESCRIPTION:“Spies Among Us” will open on Thursday\, February 6th at 10 a.m. during the museum’s first Thursday opening hours. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 6th and will be open every Thursday going forward from 10-4. We will also showcase the exhibit during our February Second Sunday Open House on Sunday\, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe exhibit will recall the story of General Gage’s spies who visited the Tavern in 1775\, explore examples of espionage on both sides\, and examine the many ways of spying that were used during the American Revolution. \nSpycraft played a pivotal role during the American Revolution\, with both the Continental Army and British forces using intelligence operations to gain strategic advantages. The Golden Ball Tavern and its proprietor Isaac Jones\, played host on a few occasions to British spies sent\, by General Thomas Gage\, to survey the towns that were scattered around the area from Boston to Worcester. This was just one of the British military’s tactics for keeping the Patriots in line. On the American side\, espionage was essential in countering the British military’s superior resources and manpower. \nThe spycraft of the American Revolution was marked by its ingenuity\, the use of civilian networks\, and the blending of military and civilian espionage tactics. Though it was often risky and unreliable\, intelligence-gathering operations played a critical role in the eventual success of the American cause\, allowing the Continental Army to take advantage of British vulnerabilities and ultimately secure victory. \nJoin us as we introduce our new exhibit and our new Thursday opening hours. But Professor Len Travers will argue in this presentation that\, for the three tense months preceding\, two Massachusetts communities offered the enticing possibility of an “Americanization” of the coming conflict. \nMembers: $5/Non Members $10 \nLen Travers holds the title of Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He authored Celebrating the Fourth: Independence Day and the Rites of Nationalism in the Early Republic (1997) and Hodges’ Scout: A Lost Patrol of the French and Indian War (2015). His research focuses on how violence—whether imagined\, threatened\, or actual—has shaped and continues to shape American societies\, politics\, and identities.
