SUMMARY:Reimagining Paul Revere: A Conversation with Narragansett Artist and Community Activist Sage Carbone
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special viewing and discussion with Boston-based artist Sage Carbone about her Indigenous beadwork reimagining of Cyrus Dallin’s Paul Revere statue. This piece was commissioned by the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum for display in the Euro-American Figures Gallery with the support of a grant from Arlington Commission on Arts and Culture. Carbone will share how her art relates to her efforts to elevate the histories and perspectives of Indigenous peoples living in Greater Boston today through such work as the Indigenous Languages Visibility Project in Cambridge and annual Red Sox Native American Celebration. \nSage Carbone is a member of the Northern Narragansett Tribe and has Nipmuc and Mi’kmaq ancestry. This program is offered in conjunction with Freedom’s Way Hidden Treasures program and Arlington 250. DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a historical presentation on the Battle of Chelsea Creek\, presented by Robert Allison\, Professor at Suffolk University\, and Jeff Pearlman\, at 11:30 a.m. \nRobert Allison is a Professor of History\, Language and Global Culture at Suffolk University. He’s one of the coordinators of The Revolution 250 Advisory Group that is overseeing commemorations across Massachusetts of the American Revolution. He is the author of numerous publications including books on The Boston Tea Party (2007)\, The Boston Massacre (2006)\, and A Short History of Boston (2004). He is president of the South Boston Historical Society and is involved with several museums and historical societies in Boston. \nJeff Pearlman a city historian in Revere and a member of the Revere Society for Cultural and Historical Preservation as well as the Colonial Society of Massachusetts. Mr. Pearlman is currently an adjunct professor at Salem State University. He previously taught public school in Revere for 36 years.

DESCRIPTION:The time is January 1774. Carol Cohen\, playing the role of Abigail Adams\, invites a group of women to Boston for a “Spinning Bee”. These were meetings where the Daughters of Liberty gathered to discuss matters of concern to colonists while they spun yarn that could be woven into fabric. The audience is part of the meeting where Abigail introduces several of the women present such as historian and author Mercy Otis Warren\, poet Phillis Wheatley and Sarah Fulton the “mother” of the Boston Tea Party. \nThe interactive program includes both first person portrayal and multimedia presentation. Following an “up close visit” with Abigail Adams. Participants will learn more about her time in Boston in the years leading up to the Declaration of Independence. Included will be stories about women who joined Abigail as important players working along side her in forging a path to Independence from Britain. Those who attend will leave with a fresh perspective on the role of woman during the time leading up to the Declaration of Independence. \nLight refreshments will be served. DESCRIPTION:Join Erica Lome\, Curator of Collections at Historic New England for our spring Americana Lecture as she discusses “Liberty & Loyalty: Embroidered coats of arms in an age of revolution” at 4pm on May 4. A light reception will follow the lecture. \nIn 1775\, Mary Jones of Weston\, Massachusetts\, watched her life collapse around her as her family\, all supporters of the British Crown\, fled their homes and had their immense fortune confiscated during the Revolution. Among what she had left to remember them was a mostly finished needlework sampler displaying the Jones family coat of arms. Years later\, she returned to Massachusetts and settled in Concord\, where this sampler now resides in the collection of the Concord Museum. \nErica Lome uses this needlework as a starting point to survey the history of embroidered coats of arms worked in Boston in the late eighteenth century. More than an accomplishment of a genteel education\, young women used heraldic needlework to document their family genealogy\, a practice which endured through war\, exile\, and independence. SUMMARY:Westford REV 250: Join Westford Town Historian\, Bob Oliphant for a revolutionary walking tour of Westlawn Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:About 400 people are buried in Westlawn Cemetery\, primarily from the 1700s and 1800s\, many of whom were members of Westford’s First Parish Church. It is the final resting place for many of the town’s founders\, veterans\, industrialists\, and farmers\, with notable family names like Prescott\, Robinson\, and Fletcher. \nColonel John Robinson (1735-1805) is the most distinguished burial\, Westford’s highest-ranking Revolutionary War officer. He led Westford Minutemen to the North Bridge in Concord on April 19\, 1775\, participating in “the shot heard ’round the world.” Robinson also fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. \nAlongside him are about 15 other Revolutionary War veterans\, marked by iron Maltese crosses placed by the Sons of the American Revolution in 1902\, veterans from the French and Indian War\, two soldiers from the War of 1812\, and nine Civil War soldiers. \nRobert “Bob” Oliphant\, a local historian in Westford\, originally hails from Oberlin\, Ohio\, where he studied metallurgy and materials science in college. He discovered his passion for genealogy during this time. After moving to Westford with his wife\, Bonnie\, and their three sons eight years post-graduation\, he became involved in local history. He has served on the Westford Historical Commission\, the Westford Museum and Historical Society board\, and various town committees. SUMMARY:Prudence Wright Re-enactment at the Pepperell Covered Bridge
DESCRIPTION:The Prudence Wright Chapter\, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Pepperell 250th Anniversary Committee are pleased to announce a re-enactment of the “The Women Who Guarded the Bridge” on May 3\, 2025. \nPreviously re-enacted by the Town’s Covered Bridge Committee in 2010 at the Grand Re-Opening of the Pepperell Covered Bridge and by the DAR in Pepperell’s annual Fourth of July Parade\, this historic event is back again by popular demand. \nThe re-enactment features Pepperell’s local heroine Prudence Wright\, who assembled a band of women dressed in men’s clothing to guard the bridge over the Nashua River in Pepperell\, during the start of the Revolutionary War. Their strong will and bravery resulted in the capture of a British spy in late April of 1775. \nThe 2025 re-enactment will take place at the Prudence Wright Scenic Overlook\, alongside the historic Pepperell Covered Bridge\, on land owned by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife. The Prudence Wright Overlook and the Pepperell Covered Bridge are symbols of the struggles and successes that occurred outside the battlefields of Lexington\, Concord and Boston during our ancestors’ fight for America’s independence. DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 14 Beacon for a special tour of the CLA’s new in-person exhibition with New England’s Hidden Histories Project Director and “Sacred Rebellion” curator\, Dr. Tricia Peone. \nThe exhibition features many treasures from the CLA’s collections: sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters created by Massachusetts Congregationalists during and after the American Revolution. These objects reveal how Congregationalists understood their moral obligations to each other and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. \nAttendees will view the exhibition with the curator\, learn more about the objects on display\, and gain a deeper understanding of the stories behind the exhibition. The discussion will also explore the unfinished business of the Revolution and the meaning of its legacy today. \nSpace is limited. She has also previously worked as the public programs director at New Hampshire Humanities\, a university lecturer teaching classes on the Salem witch trials\, early New England\, and public history\, and as a researcher for cultural heritage organizations. She holds a PhD in history from the University of New Hampshire with a specialization in the early modern Atlantic world and history of science.
