DESCRIPTION:FREE outdoor and indoor activities for kids all summer long \nBuilding on the success of the Road to Revolution partnership programs\, each Saturday from now until the end of September\, the museum will host children’s outdoor and indoor programming. The hugely successful Discovery Center experience will extend out onto the lawn with 15 new activity stations. Rolling River Printmakers of New England will partner this week with an activity station to make prints. A rideable dolphin and elephant\, courtesy of local sculptor Jeff Briggs\, along with a bouncy castle\, pirate boat with water guns\, plus water\, sand and craft tables await. \nThis free program runs from 10 am to 1 pm thanks to generous sponsorship from the Institution for Savings and the Local Cultural Council. \nLooking ahead\, in September\, the museum is pleased to partner with Imagine Studios on a fascinating project to burn and carve out of a pine log and shape into a 20 foot long mishoon (dugout canoe) using traditional methods. Led by Imagine Studios\, Darius Coombs of the Mashpee Wampanoag and Jonathan Petty of the Aquinnah Wampanoag will carve over successive weekends. DESCRIPTION:The City of Chelsea proudly presents Washington Returns to Chelsea\, a free outdoor celebration honoring Chelsea’s vital role during the American Revolution. During the Siege of Boston in 1775\, Chelsea served as a landing site for refugees fleeing the city\, offering shelter\, protection\, and critical support to displaced families. It also played a strategic role by enabling General George Washington’s army to monitor British activity in the harbor. \nJoin us on Saturday\, July 26\, 2025\, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.\, at Washington Park (428 Washington Avenue)\, across from the historic Thomas Pratt Mansion (also known as the Washington Pratt House) where General Washington reportedly stayed multiple times. Washington Returns to Chelsea is free and open to the public. \nThe event features a special appearance by George Washington reenactor John Koopman on horseback\, along with Leon Brooks and Leon Vaughn\, two African American reenactors portraying members of the Marblehead Regiment\, recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans to the American Revolution. \nAt 3:00 p.m.\, Lee Farrington will lead a walking tour through the area. Lee is a community historian who has created historic tours of Chelsea’s Prattville and Cary Square neighborhoods. \nSupported by Meet Boston’s Mini-Grant Program\, this event is part of Chelsea’s ongoing MA250 programming\, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a free program exploring The Umbrella Arts Center’s outdoors public art ramble\, Weaving an Address\, a site-specific exhibition of work by prominent Black artists commemorating colonial-era Black residents of Concord’s famed Walden Woods. \nOn Saturday\, July 19 at 3PM\, curator and artist Marla McLeod will lead a guided tour of the artwork installed at Brister’s Hill in Walden Woods\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved before Thoreau. \nThe tour will be followed at 4:30PM by refreshments and a panel discussion back at The Umbrella Arts Center (40 Stow Street\, Concord\, MA) with McLeod in dialogue with historian Elise Lemire\, author of Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts\, who was recently a subject of the new international documentary\, Concord’s Secret History\, just released on over 500 PBS stations. DESCRIPTION:“Spies Among Us” will open on Thursday\, February 6th at 10 a.m. during the museum’s first Thursday opening hours. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 6th and will be open every Thursday going forward from 10-4. We will also showcase the exhibit during our February Second Sunday Open House on Sunday\, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe exhibit will recall the story of General Gage’s spies who visited the Tavern in 1775\, explore examples of espionage on both sides\, and examine the many ways of spying that were used during the American Revolution. \nSpycraft played a pivotal role during the American Revolution\, with both the Continental Army and British forces using intelligence operations to gain strategic advantages. The Golden Ball Tavern and its proprietor Isaac Jones\, played host on a few occasions to British spies sent\, by General Thomas Gage\, to survey the towns that were scattered around the area from Boston to Worcester. This was just one of the British military’s tactics for keeping the Patriots in line. On the American side\, espionage was essential in countering the British military’s superior resources and manpower. \nThe spycraft of the American Revolution was marked by its ingenuity\, the use of civilian networks\, and the blending of military and civilian espionage tactics. Though it was often risky and unreliable\, intelligence-gathering operations played a critical role in the eventual success of the American cause\, allowing the Continental Army to take advantage of British vulnerabilities and ultimately secure victory. \nJoin us as we introduce our new exhibit and our new Thursday opening hours. The museum will continue to be open every second Sunday of the month for our Second Sunday Open House Tours and will now be open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\nWe look forward to welcoming you!

In the rural towns of Marshfield and Freetown\, the militant activities of Loyalists\, coupled with British armed support\, suggested a promising strategy to disrupt colonial resistance from within. Could it have worked? The rebels apparently feared so . . . \nThe eruption of violence on the following April 19 put an end to any hopes General Gage may have had of Loyalist ascent in Massachusetts. But Professor Len Travers will argue in this presentation that\, for the three tense months preceding\, two Massachusetts communities offered the enticing possibility of an “Americanization” of the coming conflict. \nMembers: $5/Non Members $10 \nLen Travers holds the title of Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. DESCRIPTION:From the “destruction of the tea” to the Declaration of Independence\, witness the founding of a nation through the eyes of one of colonial America’s most iconic couples. John Adams will take part as a delegate in the First and Second Continental Congresses in Philadelphia\, while his wife\, Abigail\, remains in Massachusetts as the American Revolution begins. Their correspondence allows a window into the conflicts\, the struggles of the people\, the tedious nature of the Congress\, and a loving marriage. \nAs we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026\, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will be commemorating many other historic events along the way. The letters of John and Abigail Adams reflect their lived experiences through this tumultuous time and allows us to witness history in the making.\nAbigail’s Tea Room provides an intimate setting of this performance geared towards adults and older children. \nBeer\, wine\, colonially inspired cocktails\, an assortment of cookies and scones available for purchase. \nRun time is two hours with short intermission
