SUMMARY:From Bunker Hill to Penn’s Hill: The 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill
DESCRIPTION:Join the National Park Service at Adams National Historical Park on Saturday\, June 14\, for a special event following the footsteps of the Adams family as they witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill 250 years ago during the American Revolution. This event will be held at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill (John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces)\, located at 141 Franklin St.\, Quincy\, MA. \nIn the Footsteps of the Adamses: Penn’s Hill Guided Walks – 9:30am and 11:00am \nJoin park rangers for guided walks to the top of Penn’s Hill. Walks begin at the Adams Farm and proceed uphill to the Abigail Adams Cairn. There\, stand alongside Abigail Adams\, portrayed by Audrey Stuck-Girard\, as she tells of the danger and distress that the Adamses experienced before and during the Battle of Bunker Hill. The walk is half a mile uphill\, with uneven terrain\, limited shade\, steep inclines\, and traffic crossings. Attendees are advised to bring water and dress appropriately for early summer weather. \n“The decisive Day is come on which the fate of America depends”: Aftermath of the Battle – 1:00-3:00pm \nExperience the aftermath of the battle and its effect on the Adamses and their community with special programming at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. Step into the moment of uncertainty faced by the household following the battle. Converse with Abigail Adams\, but don’t be taken aback if she mistakes you for some of the many family members\, neighbors\, in-laws\, servants\, messengers\, and children underfoot at the farm in June 1775. Meet a militiaman\, portrayed by Michael Lepage\, traveling the Old Coast Road and learn more about the battle from his perspective. \nLegacy and Commemoration: The Adamses\, Quincy\, and the Battle of Bunker Hill 250 Years Later – 3:30pm \nReflect on the legacy of the Battle of Bunker Hill during a special ranger talk on the grounds of the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. Learn more about the commemoration of the battle\, Quincy community ties to the Bunker Hill Monument\, and the role of the historical record and public memory in the telling of the Adamses’ experiences during the battle. \nAll events will take place at or start from the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill (the John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces)\, located at 141 Franklin St.\, Quincy\, MA. Street parking is available at the site in addition to the validated parking at the Visitor Center at 1250 Hancock St.\, Quincy\, MA\, a one-mile walk from the Adams Farm. Visitors may also park at the Lincoln-Hancock Community School at 300 Granite St.\, Quincy\, MA\, a 0.6-mile walk from the Adams Farm. SUMMARY:Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.

SUMMARY:Courage and Resolve in Nation and Institution Building: The Influence of Drs. Joseph and John Warren on the Founding of MGH
DESCRIPTION:Major General Joseph Warren’s death at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17\, 1775\, secured his legacy as a revolutionary war hero. Lesser known is his role as an advocate for organized healthcare for the poor and needy. Both he and his brother John advanced American medicine during the Revolutionary and Early Republic eras. SUMMARY:The Plight of Loyalists in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:It’s been said that history is written by the victors\, so it’s not surprising that the story of those loyal to the Crown in the American colonies is not as widely known as that of the Patriots. \nAs the drumbeat to independence grew louder\, Loyalists faced their Patriot neighbors’ scorn and also the agonizing decision of whether or not to flee their towns and homes. \nVarious historians have estimated that between 60\,000 and 100\,000 people fled the colonies by the time “America’s first civil war” ended. \nDr. Kerpelman will present a picture of how ordinary Massachusetts Loyalists and their Patriot neighbors interacted with one another during that fraught time between the 1750’s and the 1790’s. \nA brief tour of the 1699 Isaac Winslow House is included.

SUMMARY:"Spies Among Us" year long exhibit opening on February 6th 2025
DESCRIPTION:“Spies Among Us” will open on Thursday\, February 6th at 10 a.m. during the museum’s first Thursday opening hours. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 6th and will be open every Thursday going forward from 10-4. We will also showcase the exhibit during our February Second Sunday Open House on Sunday\, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe exhibit will recall the story of General Gage’s spies who visited the Tavern in 1775\, explore examples of espionage on both sides\, and examine the many ways of spying that were used during the American Revolution. \nSpycraft played a pivotal role during the American Revolution\, with both the Continental Army and British forces using intelligence operations to gain strategic advantages. The Golden Ball Tavern and its proprietor Isaac Jones\, played host on a few occasions to British spies sent\, by General Thomas Gage\, to survey the towns that were scattered around the area from Boston to Worcester. This was just one of the British military’s tactics for keeping the Patriots in line. On the American side\, espionage was essential in countering the British military’s superior resources and manpower. \nThe spycraft of the American Revolution was marked by its ingenuity\, the use of civilian networks\, and the blending of military and civilian espionage tactics. Though it was often risky and unreliable\, intelligence-gathering operations played a critical role in the eventual success of the American cause\, allowing the Continental Army to take advantage of British vulnerabilities and ultimately secure victory. \nJoin us as we introduce our new exhibit and our new Thursday opening hours. The museum will continue to be open every second Sunday of the month for our Second Sunday Open House Tours and will now be open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\nWe look forward to welcoming you!

SUMMARY:"In Support of the Common Cause” ~ The Merrimack Valley Goes to War A talk by historian and author Alex Cain
DESCRIPTION:“In Support of the Common Cause” ~ The Merrimack Valley Goes to War\nA talk by historian and author Alex Cain\nThursday\, June 5\, 2025\, ~ 6:00-7:30pm\nThe History Center at 97 Main Street \nIn October 1774\, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress directed towns across the colony to prepare for imminent conflict with England. In response\, the Merrimack Valley adopted a wartime posture\, forming minute companies\, stockpiling weapons\, ammunition\, and supplies\, and establishing a defense network ready to mobilize if British forces advanced from Boston. Join Alexander Cain as he examines the Merrimack Valley’s response\, focusing on Andover\, to the British threat and explores the region’s buildup to war\, the formation of the Massachusetts minute-man system just before the battles of Lexington and Concord\, and Andover’s role in the Battle of Bunker Hill. \nAlexander Cain is a well-respected and highly sought-after speaker who frequently lectures on the military and social influences of 1775 Massachusetts. He has published multiple research articles that have shed new light on the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\, and the loyalist refugee experience during the American Revolution. Alex has also published two books\, We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War and is the author of the blog and podcast “Historical Nerdery.” Alex directs a Merrimack Valley-based vocational program that introduces high school students to advanced manufacturing and skilled trades careers.

SUMMARY:Concord Art: 250 Paintings for Concord’s 250th!
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the town of Concord’s 250th anniversary\, we invite you to join us for an art-making extravaganza! This June\, artists can register and pick up a free wood panel (8 x 8 inches) from Concord Art to create an image of Concord\, whatever that may mean to you. Perhaps there is a certain road or field or woods or something else that you’ve always been drawn to or inspired by. All media is welcome; the only constraint is that you use your wood panel as your surface! You can enjoy camaraderie and community in the outdoors and create alongside your fellow artists by working either outside Concord Art (along the American Mile) or at one of our designated locations during the week of June 2nd through June 6th (locations to be announced). Artists are welcome to work together each day at these locations from 10am to 4pm. Don’t forget your easel\, supplies\, water\, and snacks! For planning purposes\, please register in advance. Space is limited at each location. Our goal is to collect 250 paintings for Concord’s 250th! At the end of the week\, we will create a digital gallery exhibition\, so please share your finished artwork with us by completing this form (the form is not available yet) by Monday June 16th. \nImage attached: Jean Smith\, The Old Manse
