DESCRIPTION:A silver bowl. 17-foot-wide painted room divider. A charismatic silversmith considering his craft. A towering mahogany desk and bookcase. Certain paintings\, sculptures\, decorative arts\, and works on paper from the MFA’s Art of the Americas art collection\, along with the artists who created them\, played a pivotal role in shaping the early history of the United States. Today\, as we approach 250 years since the country’s founding\, they likewise have a unique ability to recount and reflect that history while also inviting us to reconsider it. \nCoinciding with the 250th anniversary of American Independence\, the MFA is reimagining its 18th-century galleries on level one of the Art of the Americas Wing for the first time since they opened in 2010. The new display\, which opens in June 2026\, brings together works from across the Americas—integrating Native and non-native\, North\, South\, and Central American\, and Caribbean art—and explores how artists have contributed to\, or in some cases resisted\, ideas of nationhood and identity. Visitors can immerse themselves in a range of stories and experiences\, discovering the interconnectedness of the Americas and its history\, institutions\, and people. \nGilbert Stuart’s unfinished portrait of George Washington (1796)—the foundational image of the nation’s first president in the public imagination—offers viewers a prescient reminder that democracy is constant work in progress. An early piece of American protest art\, Paul Revere’s Sons of Liberty Bowl (1768) honors a group of Massachusetts rebels who paved the way for the Revolution. A ceramic jar (1857) by the enslaved potter and poet David Drake exemplifies literacy as an act of resistance in the decades before the Civil War. Thomas Sully drew on artistic traditions of heroism for The Passage of the Delaware (1819)\, which portrays George Washington in a dramatic scene of bravery. Meanwhile\, a recently acquired work by Alan Michelson\, a Mohawk member of Six Nations of the Grand River\, offers a contemporary critique of Washington\, who was known to the Mohawk Nation as “Town Destroyer.” These and the many other works on view reveal a past in dialogue with the present and propose endless possibilities for assessing history as we look ahead to the future.

Private letters\, intimate diaries\, and newspaper accounts reveal how the Declaration of Independence grew from draft to founding document. 1776: Declaring Independence spotlights handwritten copies of the Declaration by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson as well as multiple early printings\, including a rare Dunlap broadside. On and off the page\, we explore how it echoed across the commonwealth and around the world\, reshaping the colonists’ chances of launching a new nation. How did the Declaration change Americans’ quest for liberty\, then and now? DESCRIPTION:Patriots of Color\, a new exhibit in the Family Heritage Experience at American Ancestors\, sheds light on the overlooked histories of Black\, Native\, and multiracial men and women who fought\, labored\, and led in the struggle for American independence across all thirteen colonies. Through documents\, personal narratives\, and digital interactives\, the exhibition uncovers the courage and resilience of those whose contributions helped shape a new nation\, even as they continued to confront inequality and enslavement. \nBridging past and present\, Patriots of Color highlights the voices of descendants who are reclaiming these stories today—connecting revolutionary ideals of freedom and justice to the ongoing pursuit of equality in America. \nEntrance to the exhibit is included in admission to the Family Heritage Experience and can be purchased either in person or online.

Today\, as we approach 250 years since the country’s founding\, they likewise have a unique ability to recount and reflect that history while also inviting us to reconsider it. \nCoinciding with the 250th anniversary of American Independence\, the MFA is reimagining its 18th-century galleries on level one of the Art of the Americas Wing for the first time since they opened in 2010. The new display\, which opens in June 2026\, brings together works from across the Americas—integrating Native and non-native\, North\, South\, and Central American\, and Caribbean art—and explores how artists have contributed to\, or in some cases resisted\, ideas of nationhood and identity. Visitors can immerse themselves in a range of stories and experiences\, discovering the interconnectedness of the Americas and its history\, institutions\, and people. \nGilbert Stuart’s unfinished portrait of George Washington (1796)—the foundational image of the nation’s first president in the public imagination—offers viewers a prescient reminder that democracy is constant work in progress. An early piece of American protest art\, Paul Revere’s Sons of Liberty Bowl (1768) honors a group of Massachusetts rebels who paved the way for the Revolution. A ceramic jar (1857) by the enslaved potter and poet David Drake exemplifies literacy as an act of resistance in the decades before the Civil War. Thomas Sully drew on artistic traditions of heroism for The Passage of the Delaware (1819)\, which portrays George Washington in a dramatic scene of bravery. Meanwhile\, a recently acquired work by Alan Michelson\, a Mohawk member of Six Nations of the Grand River\, offers a contemporary critique of Washington\, who was known to the Mohawk Nation as “Town Destroyer.” These and the many other works on view reveal a past in dialogue with the present and propose endless possibilities for assessing history as we look ahead to the future.

In this talk we’ll look at all the flavors\, dishes and cooks that got us here\, from the Indigenous ingredients that shape regional American cuisine\, to the influence of the African kitchen\, to the fast food revolution. \nAbout the Speaker: \nSarah Lohman is originally from Hinckley\, Ohio where she began working in a museum at the age of 16\, cooking historical food over a wood-burning stove. She graduated with a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2005. For her undergraduate thesis\, she opened a temporary restaurant/installation that reinterpreted food of the Colonial era for a modern audience. Lohman moved to New York City in 2006 and worked as Video Producer for New York magazine’s food blog\, Grub Street. She chronicled her personal explorations in culinary history on her blog\, Four Pounds Flour\, from 2008-2018.  \nLohman’s most recent book Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods\, was released by W.W. Norton & Co. in October  2023. The book is a New York Times Editors’ Choice and was named one of the Best Books of 2023 by Amazon\, Food & Wine\, and Adam Gopnik on the Milk Street podcast. Lohman’s first book\, Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine\, was released by Simon & Schuster in December 2016. An Amazon bestseller\, the Atlantic called it “Richly researched\, intriguing\, and cleverly written.” Eight Flavors  is currently taught in undergraduate classes at Purdue and Pennsylvania State University. Her third book\, Ice Cream Land\, will be released Summer 2027.  \nOver her career\, Lohman’s work has been featured in The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, as well as on All Things Considered\, CNN\, Gimlet Media\, and NHK Japan. She has appeared in PBS’s American Experience\, The Cooking Channel’s Food: Fact or Fiction\, and developed a historical food service for Taylor Mac’s a 24-Decade History of Popular Music.  \nLohman works with institutions around the country to create public programs focused on food. She has lectured at diverse institutions including the Lower East Side Tenement Museum\, Museum of Science (Boston)\, the Smithsonian Museum of American History\, and the Culinary Historians of Southern California. Through archival research and storytelling\, she continues to uncover new details about the estate and its former owners. \nDavid Martin\, Ph.D.\, is Professor/Dean Emeritus from Gallaudet University. Since retiring to Cape Cod\, he has served as past president of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society and currently serves as president of the Marstons Mills Historical Society. DESCRIPTION:Featuring manuscripts\, artifacts\, and rarely seen treasures\, this exhibition captures a monumental moment in American history.  \nIn 1776\, people grappled with ideas of liberty\, loyalty\, and the role of government in society. Private letters\, intimate diaries\, and newspaper accounts reveal how the Declaration of Independence grew from draft to founding document. 1776: Declaring Independence spotlights handwritten copies of the Declaration by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson as well as multiple early printings\, including a rare Dunlap broadside. On and off the page\, we explore how it echoed across the commonwealth and around the world\, reshaping the colonists’ chances of launching a new nation. How did the Declaration change Americans’ quest for liberty\, then and now?
