DESCRIPTION:Come to the historic Wayside Inn on October 26\, 2024 for an experience like never before. Start the day by listening to colonial music\, talking with reenactors\, visiting sutlers\, observing cannon firing demonstrations and more. Then watch as the Colonial and British armies battle for control of the Red Horse Tavern. \nEighteenth century taverns were important in the Colonies as a place to hear the news and other current events\, engage in commerce\, conduct militia drills and provide respite for weary travelers. The Red Horse Tavern\, sitting along the Boston Post Road\, the major east-west route to and from Boston and New York\, was crucial in that anyone or anything travelling into or out of Boston to/from the west would have to pass by its door. Which ever side controlled the Tavern could control the flow of supplies\, troops and information. \nThe Redcoats are determined to wrest control\, no matter the cost\, while the Colonists will do all they can to stop them and send them back to Boston. \nWho will control the tavern? DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Massachusetts Provincial Congress\n“Exploring Democracy – Our Rights and Our Responsibilities”\nOctober 11\, 2024\n9:30am – 4:30pm\nFirst Parish in Concord and The Wright Tavern\n*Register here to attend* \nIn October 1774\, the political conflict between Great Britain and Massachusetts reached a crisis. Parliament enacted the “Intolerable Acts” to punish the province for the Tea Party\, and they revoked the charter of 1691 by which the popularly elected House of Representatives joined with the Council and Crown-appointed Governor to rule the Bay Colony. In the ensuing furor\, county conventions protested the changes; crowds closed courts\, Patriots took over county militias\, and encouraged towns to resist the new regime of the General Court. Royal Governor Thomas Gage called the Court to meet in Salem\, but the Assembly never convened. \nAlthough Gage canceled the session\, the representatives decided to meet behind closed and locked doors and reorganize as the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Its first session opened a week later\, on October 11th\, in Concord\, safe from the control of British authorities. The gathering was a landmark in the history of self-government. The Congress set the colony on a collision course with Britain and an eventual road to independence. Even as it proclaimed loyalty to the Crown\, the Congress mobilized the province in a struggle to reclaim the rights and liberties Massachusetts had enjoyed. Without declaring independence\, the popularly elected body seized the reins of power\, charted a new future for Massachusetts\, and set a model of self-government. \nOctober 11\, 2024\, marks the 250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. To commemorate this occasion and honor our forebearers\, the Wright Tavern Legacy Trust is sponsoring a gathering in Concord’s First Parish Meetinghouse and the Wright Tavern next door\, where the delegates to the Congress met. This will be a day-long\, engaging program. With noted historians to guide us\, we will return to this crucial moment in the history of the American Revolution and ask what we can learn from the past. With state legislators joining us\, we will examine the state of democratic governance in Massachusetts and the United States today. And\, with students and teachers from Massachusetts schools\, we will collaboratively explore the future of democracy. Come join us for this remarkable day. \nREGISTER for this historic event!

SUMMARY:250th Anniversary of the First Massachusetts Provincial Congress
DESCRIPTION:On October 7\, 1774\, ninety chosen representatives met at Salem in defiance of General Gage’s order. They elected John Hancock to serve as chairman. They resolved to form themselves into “a Provincial Congress…to take into consideration the dangerous and alarming situation of public affairs in this province\, and to consult and determine on such measures as they shall judge will tend to promote the true interest of his majesty\, and the peace\, welfare\, and prosperity of the province.” The establishment of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress was essentially a coup détat: a sudden\, violent\, and unlawful seizure of power. The royal government\, headed by General Gage\, was now isolated and virtually powerless except for the presence of the army and navy in Boston.

Every town’s story was different\, and Acton’s story was unique – and inspiring. \nMary Fuhrer is an Acton resident and Ph.D. social historian. For the past 30 years\, she has interpreted village life in colonial and early Republic Massachusetts. It is one of Ives’ best-known and most highly regarded pieces. The sonata’s four movements represent figures associated with transcendentalism: Emerson\, Hawthorne\, The Alcotts\, and Thoreau. The opening bars of Beethoven’s Symphony.

SUMMARY:Commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the Bicentennial celebration of the Marquis de Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of the United States! Throughout his yearlong tour of all 24 states\, Americans honored Lafayette with a parade and great fanfare at almost every stop he made. Local craftspeople also produced many types of commemorative memorabilia\, such as the pictured drum\, baby shoes\, and ribbon\, now in the Old Sturbridge Village Museum Collection. When Lafayette toured the state of Massachusetts\, his final stop was in the Town of Sturbridge\, where he was greeted by a martial band\, the Town’s artillery company\, and thousands of civilians. \nCommemorative Ceremony on the Sturbridge Common\nJoin us on September 3\, 2024\, at 6:00 p.m. for a commemorative event on the Sturbridge common\, the exact ground where Lafayette stopped. An actor portraying Lafayette will be greeted by costumed interpreters portraying veterans of the revolution\, members of the Sturbridge Artillery\, who will stand by with their cannon\, and the musicians from the Uxbridge Grenadiers. There will be a triumphal arch\, toasts by costumed interpreters from Old Sturbridge Village\, fife and drum music\, and an opportunity for the public to make their own commemorative Lafayette ribbon. Experience the closest thing to the actual events that took place in 1824 here in Sturbridge! This ceremony is FREE and open to the public! \nThe commemorative event is part of The American Friend of Lafayette’s 2024-2025 Bicentennial Tour\, which will take place across the 24 states that Lafayette visited on his Farewell Tour.
