SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the New Bedford Whaling Museum will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today? \nForging Independence | Building a Nation outlines important regional historical events of the American Revolution\, including the Boston Tea Party\, which happened on the locally built and owned vessel the Dartmouth\, and Grey’s raid\, encompassing the defense of Fort Phoenix\, the siege and burning of Bedford Village\, and the Bombardment of Fairhaven. The installation frames these war-time events within larger state-wide and national arcs\, including the Stamp Tax Crisis\, Battle of Bunker Hill\, Occupation of Boston\, Massachusetts statehood\, the adoption of the State Bill of Rights\, and early activities tied to nation building. What did it mean to discard a system of governance and colonial allegiance and establish a new country? How did people grapple with and make sense of the revolutionary period and what came after? What ideas and tenets became pillars of that era\, how are their legacies felt today\, and what complications or tensions arose in that space of negotiation? \nThe project relies on the Museum’s expansive permanent collection to center and share diverse stories and experiences from Massachusetts\, consider the promises and challenges of the American Revolution\, and makes connections between past and present. The exhibition utilizes artifacts and archival sources to illuminate the stories of a broad range of individuals\, from local merchants who skirted blockades and traded as privateers to the narratives of private citizens and regional residents\, including men\, women and children of different classes\, ages\, ethnic and racial backgrounds\, and status\, immigrants\, Indigenous people\, and enslaved and free people of color. The exhibition includes the voices and stories of those who served in the American militia\, were passionate Revolutionaries\, outright ambivalent about Independence\, or avid British Loyalists.

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary Journey of William Rotch Sr.
DESCRIPTION:A special exhibition of selections from the Historical Graphic Novel Quaker Whaler Traitor Spy! by Dr. Sarah Crabtree\, Illustrated by Melissa Philley. \nWilliam Rotch was one of the unluckiest men of the eighteenth century.  Accused of treason four times by three governments in two decades (1775 – 1795)\, he became a cautionary tale for any who dared dissent.  A member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)\, and thus a pacifist\, he vehemently opposed the wars for independence and empire during the late eighteenth century. But William Rotch was also one of the luckiest men of the eighteenth century.  Whaling was an exceptional industry in that the factory was a floating one.  Ships could be at sea for years at a time\, staffed with a motley crew\, frequenting ports the world over.  Rotch shrewdly used these factors to his advantage\, amassing a fortune by exploiting the very political fragmentation he so adamantly protested. Beginning with the Boston Tea Party\, the Rotches stretched the bounds of acceptable business practice by claiming residency – simultaneously – in three different countries.  This tactic landed Rotch in court almost as frequently as his antiwar stance\, but here too he won acquittal. \nSo was William Rotch a Quaker? A whaler? A traitor?  A spy?  This exhibit invites the viewer – you! – to decide which label best describes him.  Along the way\, we’ll revisit some famous (and infamous!) events and we’ll hear from a few characters you’ve definitely heard of and some maybe you haven’t.  What we hope is that you’ll agree his-story is a way of reapproaching how history is made – a story that is as much about who and what we remember as how and why we remember them.

On and off the page\, we explore how it echoed across the commonwealth and around the world\, reshaping the colonists’ chances of launching a new nation. DESCRIPTION:FREE outdoor and indoor activities for kids all summer long \nBuilding on the success of the Road to Revolution partnership programs\, each Saturday from now until the end of September\, the museum will host children’s outdoor and indoor programming. The hugely successful Discovery Center experience will extend out onto the lawn with 15 new activity stations. Rolling River Printmakers of New England will partner this week with an activity station to make prints. A rideable dolphin and elephant\, courtesy of local sculptor Jeff Briggs\, along with a bouncy castle\, pirate boat with water guns\, plus water\, sand and craft tables await. \nThis free program runs from 10 am to 1 pm thanks to generous sponsorship from the Institution for Savings and the Local Cultural Council. \nLooking ahead\, in September\, the museum is pleased to partner with Imagine Studios on a fascinating project to burn and carve out of a pine log and shape into a 20 foot long mishoon (dugout canoe) using traditional methods. Led by Imagine Studios\, Darius Coombs of the Mashpee Wampanoag and Jonathan Petty of the Aquinnah Wampanoag will carve over successive weekends. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 21\, 2026\, at 1pm\, we’ll be hosting a presentation at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site that celebrates the 250th Anniversary of the Knox Trail.  \nThe centerpiece of the event will be a documentary screening\, followed by a lively discussion on the historical importance of the Knox Trail\, featuring Jonathan Barkan and Ben Haley. \nIn a wonderful nod to history\, Jonathan Barkan—who created a memorable slide show for the 1976 Knox Trail re-enactment 50 years ago—has updated his work for this milestone anniversary. He’s developed a brand-new digital slide show\, complete with an original soundtrack and fresh narration.  \nJoining him is Ben Haley from the Massachusetts Historical Commission\, whose expertise\, and lectures on the history of the Knox Trail’s markers and memorials\, will add even more depth to the conversation.

DESCRIPTION:This March\, the Freedom Trail® Foundation will honor Women’s History Month with the return of the Revolutionary Women Tours. The tours will help residents and visitors discover the indomitable women who took part in the American Revolution\, and the generations of women that followed\, inaugurating their own struggles for freedom and equality.  \nThe Freedom Trail Revolutionary Women Tours invites people of all ages to walk the Freedom Trail and explore four centuries of revolutionary women who changed history. These 90-minute tours feature tales of the early religious rebellions of Anne Hutchinson and Mary Dyer\, abolitionist movements of Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman\, landmark achievements of Black pioneers Phillis Wheatley and Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler\, prolific writings of Abigail Adams and Louisa May Alcott\, dynamic speeches of Margaret Sanger and Susan B. Anthony\, and more. Walk the paths these influential women treaded\, while visiting the places where their voices were heard\, works published\, and were laid to rest.   \nThe tours also feature official Freedom Trail historic sites from the site of the Great Elm on Boston Common\, where women paid the ultimate price for refusing to conform to puritanical values\, to the Granary Burying Ground\, where those who fought fiercely for independence are remembered alongside their revolutionary male counterparts\, the Old Corner Bookstore and Old South Meeting House\, where women made change through the power of literature and the spoken word. Revolutionary Women Tours culminate at Faneuil Hall\, the Cradle of Liberty\, which played a prominent role in both the abolitionist and women’s suffrage movements.

DESCRIPTION:Step back in time with Stacy Booth of the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment and experience the sights\, smells\, and techniques of colonial‑era cooking.\nJoin us at the historic Lafayette‑Durfee House for a hands‑on look at how meals were prepared over an open hearth in the 1700s.\nThe transition from winter to spring is the hardest season for an 18th century housewife to make dinner in. Lacking fresh foods to eat she relies on the foods preserved from the previous fall. If\nshe had planned properly through the winter there may still be a good variety of pickles\, preserved fruits\, salted/smoked meats or cheese to eat.\nHistoric Foodways expert Stacy Booth will discuss the preservation process and demonstrate some 18th century hearth cooked meals\nfrom the preserves created last fall.\nStacy Booth is a foodways historian with almost 20 years of experience reenacting and presenting to the public. She specializes in 17th and 18th century New England foodways\npresentations and cooking demonstrations. She worked previously at Plimoth Patuxet (formerly Plimoth Plantation) and Coggeshall Farm Museum as a 1st and 3rd person reenactor. She is currently a board member of Col Bailey’s 2nd Massachusetts Regiment\, a Revolutionary War reenactment group who has been participating in national reenactments these past 50 plus years.\nHer experiences in Revolutionary War reenactment for the last 10 years have allowed her to travel from Canada to Maryland participating in hearth/campfire cooking as well as outdoor\nbread oven baking demonstrations. She also runs her business\, Forgotten Recipes (forgotten recipes.com)\, where she has presented\, cooked at or set up displays for libraries\, museums and\nhistoric houses for the past six years. DESCRIPTION:Reenactor Henry Cooke will portray the life and preaching of a significant Concord resident\, the Rev. William Emerson\, during the weeks leading up to the battle at the Old North Bridge and his experiences on the day itself. \nHe will interpret Rev. Emerson’s artillery sermon on Muster Day on March 17\, 1775\, which presages the outbreak of hostilities a month later\, and included this charge: “let every single step we take in this most intricate affair be upon the defensive…. God forbid it be said that we struck the first blow!” Cooke\, who owns Historical Costume Services in Randolph\, will also recount the feelings of ordinary Concord residents who watched the battle. \nDoors open at 2 PM for a social period and refreshments\n2:15 PM – Brief Society announcements followed by the Guest Speaker

Join film composer and pianist David Cieri for a discussion about his experience working with award-winning documentary filmmakers\, creating musical soundtracks that engage our emotions to support the historic narrative playing out on screen. David will also perform excerpts from his most recent score for Ken Burns’s six-part documentary The American Revolution\, created in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and Johnny Gandelsman. \nDavid Cieri\, a musician and composer\, makes music for film\, concert\, and album release. Cieri has worked with numerous celebrated filmmakers\, including Ken Burns\, the Ewers Brothers\, and Barak Goodman. He has recorded nineteen acclaimed albums under his own name\, the last ten of which were released by Ropeadope Records. He has collaborated on a major live documentary project with the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage and has made two records with the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa. David wrote and performed the live scores for the first three seasons of The Paris Review podcasts. He teaches courses on Film Scoring and Music for Film at The City College of New York.

Armed with letters of marque\, these privately owned vessels disrupted enemy supply lines\, seized valuable cargo\, and brought home provisions\, weapons\, and even captured vessels that could be refitted into more privateers to help keep the cause alive. \nPrivateering was a town-wide enterprise. Merchants financed voyages. Carpenters\, ropemakers\, and sailmakers outfitted vessels. Mariners signed on for a share of prize money. Women kept households\, farms\, and businesses running\, and stocked stores with goods brought in as prizes. When captures returned to port\, they could make fortunes. When privateers were lost\, it meant tragedy and ruin. \nAs we mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, join us for a fast-paced\, people-centered program that connects Newburyport to the wider Atlantic war and the astonishing records privateers left behind\, from logbooks and diaries to prize papers and court documents.

DESCRIPTION:Songs\, stories\, theatrics\, and an epic “crankie” panorama bring Newburyport’s Revolutionary taverns to life. Come raise a glass with us!\nAt the end of a landmark privateering symposium\, what is there left to do but repair to the tavern? In Revolutionary Newburyport\, taverns were more than places to drink. They were the town’s patriot headquarters\, where news from other embattled towns was shared\, committees met\, captains were recruited\, merchants and investors negotiated\, and neighbors argued politics\, prizes\, and the price of independence. They were also the original entertainment venues\, alive with songs\, fiddles\, ballads\, recitations\, sketches\, and the kind of convivial spectacle that helped a crowded port blow off steam\, build connections\, and keep morale up through a bleak winter at war. \nJoin Edward Speck (Theater in the Open)\, Bethany Groff Dorau (Museum of Old Newbury)\, The Portermen (Newburyport’s shanty and traditional music purveyors)\, and fiddler and hurdy-gurdy player Adrienne Howard for an evening that channels that 18th-century spirit: toasts\, music\, art\, theater\, silly human tricks\, and a show-stopping crankie (a moving panorama) featuring art by Alan Bull. Throughout the night\, historians in silly hats will pop up with quick tales and tidbits about tavern shenanigans\, from the rituals of drinking and song to the ways tavern rooms doubled as civic space when the Revolution came to town. DESCRIPTION:Featuring manuscripts\, artifacts\, and rarely seen treasures\, this exhibition captures a monumental moment in American history.  \nIn 1776\, people grappled with ideas of liberty\, loyalty\, and the role of government in society. Private letters\, intimate diaries\, and newspaper accounts reveal how the Declaration of Independence grew from draft to founding document. 1776: Declaring Independence spotlights handwritten copies of the Declaration by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson as well as multiple early printings\, including a rare Dunlap broadside. On and off the page\, we explore how it echoed across the commonwealth and around the world\, reshaping the colonists’ chances of launching a new nation. How did the Declaration change Americans’ quest for liberty\, then and now?
