DESCRIPTION:Free\, virtual program; registration required \nAbout the Author: Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and a Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, Dr. Marla Miller’s primary research interest is U.S. women’s work before industrialization. Her book The Needle’s Eye: Women and Work in the Age of Revolution was published by the University of Massachusetts Press in August 2006\, and won the Costume Society of America’s Millia Davenport Publication Award for the best book in the field for that year. In 2009 she published an edited collection\, Cultivating a Past: Essays in the History of Hadley\, Massachusetts\, also with the University of Massachusetts Press. Her book Betsy Ross and the Making of America  (Holt\, 2010)–a scholarly biography of that much-misunderstood early American craftswoman–was a finalist for the Cundill Prize in History at McGill University (the world’s largest non-fiction historical literature prize)\, and was named to the Washington Post’s “Best of 2010” list. A short biography of Massachusetts gownmaker Rebecca Dickinson appeared in the Westview Press series Lives of American Women in summer 2013. In 2019 she completed a microhistory of women and work in 18th-century New England titled Entangled Lives: Labor\, Livelihood\, and Landscapes of Change in Rural Massachusetts (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2019). In addition to her own scholarship\, Professor Miller contributes to her fields of study as an editor.  She has served on the editorial board of the Public Historian as well as the Journal of the Early Republic\, and currently serves on the board of the New England Quarterly.   Dr. Miller is also the founding editor of the prizewinning UMass Press series Public History in Historical Perspective. \nAbout the Book: What was women’s work truly like in late eighteenth-century America\, and what does it tell us about the gendered social relations of labor in the early republic? In Entangled Lives\, Marla R. Miller examines the lives of Anglo-\, African\, and Native American women in one rural New England community—Hadley\, Massachusetts—during the town’s slow transformation following the Revolutionary War. Peering into the homes\, taverns\, and farmyards of Hadley\, Miller offers readers an intimate history of the working lives of these women and their vital role in the local economy. Miller\, a longtime resident of Hadley\, follows a handful of eighteenth-century women working in a variety of occupations: domestic service\, cloth making\, health and healing\, and hospitality. She asks about the social openings and opportunities this work created—and the limitations it placed on ordinary lives. Her compelling stories about women’s everyday work\, grounded in the material culture\, built environment\, and landscapes of rural western Massachusetts\, reveal the larger economic networks in which Hadley operated and the subtle shifts that accompanied the emergence of the middle class in that rural community. Ultimately\, this book shows how work differentiated not only men and woman but also race and class as Miller follows young\, mostly white women working in domestic service\, African American women negotiating labor in enslavement and freedom\, and women of the rural gentry acting as both producers and employers. Engagingly written and featuring fascinating characters\, the book deftly takes us inside a society and shows us how it functions. Offering an intervention into larger conversations about local history\, microhistory\, and historical scholarship\, Entangled Lives is a revealing journey through early America.

Mozart was a practicing Freemason and defended the principles of equality and that music should be accessible for all people. Although he depended on aristocratic support\, he was a staunch defender of the average citizen. His music took a turn from the Baroque era by featuring beautiful melodies with clean and less adorned lines. Johann Hummel was a student of Mozart and embraced the ideals of clarity\, structure\, elegant melodies and individual expression. We are pleased to bring these two beautiful works to historic Pilgrim Hall Museum.

SUMMARY:LOCAL HISTORY GUILD | Revolution in Old Dartmouth
DESCRIPTION:As the U.S. marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War\, local historians have delved deeply into the history of the Revolution in Old Dartmouth. Different approaches reveal new and exciting stories related to the 1770s and 1780s in the areas now called Westport\, Dartmouth\, New Bedford\, Fairhaven\, and Acushnet. Join us this March at a virtual program to discuss their projects and the stories they have uncovered. \nLocal History Guild is the NBWM’s quarterly Zoom program\, an informal discussion about art\, history\, science and culture related to the museum’s mission\, collection\, and the surrounding region. In this edition of the program\, we will be joined by Jenny O’Neill (Executive Director\, Westport Historical Society)\, Diane Gilbert (President\, Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust)\, Jonathan Lane (Executive Director\, Revolution 250)\, and Judith Lund (Curator Emerita\, New Bedford Whaling Museum) in a discussion that will help listeners take a deeper dive into the past. \nJonathan Lane is Executive Director of Revolution 250 and has more than 30 years of experience in public history\, tourism and cultural programming. . While his employment has led him to many leading institutions\, including Plimoth-Patuxet\, the American Antiquarian Society\, Berklee College of Music and the Massachusetts Historical Society\, his historical studies have taken him to libraries and archives throughout the U.S. and United Kingdom. He is the author of a monograph on songs for British Soldiers in the 18th century\, and is the editor of “From the Potomac to the Etowah\, the Civil War Correspondence of Alonzo Hall Quint.” \nDiane Gilbert is the president of the Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust (DHPT) and with a board of directors has managed the 1762 Elihu Akin House since 2008. She is a self-taught life-long learner in historic preservation and has directed the preservation efforts of the Akin House on the corner of Dartmouth and Rockland Streets. She has curated art exhibitions at the New Bedford Art Museum\, served on the Dartmouth Select Board and the Dartmouth Historical Commission\, and was a volunteer docent at the NBWM for over ten years. \nJenny O’Neill is the Executive Director of the Westport Historical Society. She has been immersed in the history of Westport for nearly two decades and has been a key player in the restoration of the Handy House\, and most recently\, in the rehabilitation of the historical society’s headquarters\, the Bell School\, which in late 2025 reopened as the freshly reimagined Westport History Center. She is a citizen of the world with roots in Australia and the United Kingdom\, and currently resides in Fairhaven. \nJudith N. Lund is an independent historian and Curator Emerita of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. She has researched extensively and published such volumes as Whaling Masters and Whaling Voyages Sailing from American Ports (2001) and with Beverly Glennon\, Greetings from Dartmouth Massachusetts (2003).

DESCRIPTION:Join us in the RJD parlors as Dr. Sarah Crabtree gives an illustrated talk addressing themes in her book: Quaker\, Whaler\, Traitor\, Spy! The Trials of William Rotch. Sarah Crabtree is a Professor of History at San Francisco State University. Quaker\, Whaler\, Traitor\, Spy! (PSUP\, March 2026) is her second book. She is also the author of several journal articles and the recipient of several fellowships\, including the National Endowment of the Humanities grant that supported the development of this exhibit. \nAbout Quaker\, Whaler\, Traitor\, Spy! The Trials of William Rotch:\nAccused of treason four times by three governments in two revolutionary decades (1775 – 1795)\, William Rotch suffered from the “with-us-or-against-us” political landscape of the late eighteenth century. A Quaker\, he opposed wars for independence and empire. Yet he downplayed and even withheld key details from his story\, a second narrative that began with the Boston Tea Party\, stretched across the world\, and made him one of the wealthiest men in America.

The Trials of William Rotch” written by Dr. Sarah Crabtree and illustrated by Melissa “Sawhand” Philley. Twenty prints of art in the book will be on display. The artist\, Melissa Philley will speak about her work at 6:30pm. This event is free and open to the public. \nAccused of treason four times by three governments in two revolutionary decades (1775 – 1795)\, William Rotch suffered from the “with-us-or-against-us” political landscape of the late eighteenth century. A Quaker\, he opposed wars for independence and empire. Yet he downplayed and even withheld key details from his story\, a second narrative that began with the Boston Tea Party\, stretched across the world\, and made him one of the wealthiest men in America. \nThis exhibit invites the viewer – you! – to decide which label best describes him. Along the way\, we’ll revisit some famous (and infamous!) events and we’ll hear from a few characters you’ve definitely heard of and some maybe you haven’t. What we hope is that you’ll agree his-story is a way of reapproaching how history is made – a story that is as much about who and what we remember as how and why we remember them.

Then the Privateer Marines who perished aboard the General Arnold in a storm in Plymouth Bay on Christmas 1778. This event is a collaboration between the Marine Corps League Detachment 1306 in Plymouth and Volunteers of America Massachusetts in Plymouth. The Trials of William Rotch\, presents a hands-on art workshop for youth ages 12 and up. Artists of all skill levels are welcome. The workshop is free and takes place at the NBWNHP Visitor Center\, in New Bedford. Some supplies will be provided\, but participants are encouraged to bring their own pens\, pencils\, and markers. \nThis talk is a part of the project titled\, “America’s 250th: Unraveling the Revolutionary Journey of William Rotch Sr.”. The project explores a new historical graphic novel about the life of William Rotch Sr.\, penned by Dr. Sarah Crabtree and illustrated by Melissa Philley\, through a series of programs and an exhibition of about 20 artworks from the book\, opening at the RJD onNovember 20. It is funded by Eastern National\, a non-profit partner of the National Park Service.

DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Old Ship Meeting House invite you to join us for a special program: “The Supreme Court and Judicial Independence in the Early Republic.” We are honored to welcome as our guest speaker Hingham native Ethan V. Torrey\, who serves as the Legal Counsel of the Supreme Court of the United States. Ethan’s presentation will focus on the Supreme Court and judicial independence in the early republic\, from the Declaration of Independence to the Chief Justiceship of John Marshall. This will include discussion of the important roles played by early justices from Massachusetts\, such as William Cushing of Scituate\, one of the original five justices of the Supreme Court\, confirmed by the Senate in September 1789. After his death in 1810\, Cushing was replaced by Joseph Story of Marblehead\, Massachusetts\, who served on the court from 1812 to 1845. Both Cushing and Story were educated at Harvard University. \nOur speaker\, Ethan Torrey provides legal services to the Supreme Court as an institution and supports the justices on a variety of case-related issues. Torrey also teaches a class on the history of the Supreme Court at George Washington University.

DESCRIPTION:The United States.08. Naval Shipbuilding Museum is celebrating US Navy 250th Birthday onboard USS Salem on Saturday\, October 11 and Sunday\, October 12. The museum will be open from 10am – 4pm and is offering free admission for US Navy Active Duty & Veterans. Quincy has a rich shipbuilding and military history. The Salem’s Volunteer Crew will “dress ship” Saturday\, weather permitting and render boarding honors to all Naval Service members both days in honor of this special occasion. \nSpecial tour information will also recognize John Adams legacy over the Navy’s birthday weekend. Quincy is the proud hometown of 2nd US President John Adams. On 5 October 1775\, Congress created the first of a series of committees to study naval matters. From that time onward throughout his career Adams championed the establishment and strengthening of an American Navy. He was so active and effective in forwarding the nation’s naval interests that he is often called “the Father of the Navy”. \nJohn Adams re-enactor Michael LePage will be onboard Saturday greeting visitors. Hear from John Adams himself as he discusses his earliest beginnings in Braintree through his days as delegate of the Continental Congress and foreign ambassador. Hear his opinions of his contemporaries and how he longs to be home with his “dearest friend\,” Abigail\, and their children. Mr. Adams’ singular wit is appealing to children and adults!\nThe 3-5-0 Girls will bring their “Remember the Ladies” Exhibit onboard Saturday as they celebrate 250 years of women serving alongside and in the Navy; as women did contribute significantly to the military throughout American history.\nInternationally acclaimed The Johnson Girls will perform Saturday from 1:30-2:30pm. DESCRIPTION:The United States.08. Naval Shipbuilding Museum is celebrating US Navy 250th Birthday onboard USS Salem on Saturday\, October 11 and Sunday\, October 12. The museum will be open from 10am – 4pm and is offering free admission for US Navy Active Duty & Veterans. Quincy has a rich shipbuilding and military history. The Salem’s Volunteer Crew will “dress ship” Saturday\, weather permitting and render boarding honors to all Naval Service members both days in honor of this special occasion. \nSpecial tour information will also recognize John Adams legacy over the Navy’s birthday weekend. Quincy is the proud hometown of 2nd US President John Adams. On 5 October 1775\, Congress created the first of a series of committees to study naval matters. From that time onward throughout his career Adams championed the establishment and strengthening of an American Navy. He was so active and effective in forwarding the nation’s naval interests that he is often called “the Father of the Navy”. \nJohn Adams re-enactor Michael LePage will be onboard Saturday greeting visitors. Hear from John Adams himself as he discusses his earliest beginnings in Braintree through his days as delegate of the Continental Congress and foreign ambassador. Hear his opinions of his contemporaries and how he longs to be home with his “dearest friend\,” Abigail\, and their children. Mr. Adams’ singular wit is appealing to children and adults!\nThe 3-5-0 Girls will bring their “Remember the Ladies” Exhibit onboard Saturday as they celebrate 250 years of women serving alongside and in the Navy; as women did contribute significantly to the military throughout American history.\nInternationally acclaimed The Johnson Girls will perform Saturday from 1:30-2:30pm. They have been recognized as a force on the folk and maritime music scene for the past 27 years as the leading all-woman\, a cappella maritime group in the world.\nUSNSM is a sub-grant recipient of Discover Quincy’s Massachusetts 250 grant funded by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism. General admission is $12-15. USNSM participates in the Massachusetts Cultural Council Card to Culture Program offering $5 admission for Massachusetts residents who show their Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA)\, Healthcare Connector\, or Women\, Infant\, Children (WIC) card.
