SUMMARY:Revolutionary Narratives: From Broadsides to Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:The American Revolution has been contested since its very beginning. During the Revolution\, contemporaries looking to understand what independence meant had to shift through disinformation and journalism rife with as many opinions as today. In the war’s aftermath\, narratives of the Revolution went through continuous reinterpretations in response to political and social changes. From the Civil War to the Cold War and newsrooms to Hollywood\, Americans looked to the Revolutionary era to debate and define what it meant to be an American\, with often divisive results. Now\, during the 250th anniversary of the Revolution\, Jordan Taylor and Michael Hattem will examine commentary in Revolutionary-era newspapers and broadsides\, consider how understanding of American independence has changed over time\, and reflect on how the public sees the nation’s founding today. \nThis is a hybrid event. Today\, it is the largest town in the Bay State\, with neighborhoods from the coastline of its downtown into wooded enclaves inland that boast centuries-old homes. \nThis tour will bring you inside several colonial-era homes found in Plymouth\, with many more highlighted from the comfort of our charter bus. \nVernacular farmhouses\, 17th- and 18th-century rowhouses\, and the saltbox home are some topics of colonial-era architecture that will be seen and discussed on this tour\, along with stories about the people and history of these places. \nInterior stops include the 1684 Nathaniel Church House\, the late-18th century Richmond – Burgess House\, and more!

SUMMARY:Calling All Kids\, Patriots And Sailors: Revolutionary Summer Saturdays
DESCRIPTION:FREE outdoor and indoor activities for kids all summer long \nBuilding on the success of the Road to Revolution partnership programs\, each Saturday from now until the end of September\, the museum will host children’s outdoor and indoor programming. The hugely successful Discovery Center experience will extend out onto the lawn with 15 new activity stations. Rolling River Printmakers of New England will partner this week with an activity station to make prints. A rideable dolphin and elephant\, courtesy of local sculptor Jeff Briggs\, along with a bouncy castle\, pirate boat with water guns\, plus water\, sand and craft tables await. \nThis free program runs from 10 am to 1 pm thanks to generous sponsorship from the Institution for Savings and the Local Cultural Council. \nLooking ahead\, in September\, the museum is pleased to partner with Imagine Studios on a fascinating project to burn and carve out of a pine log and shape into a 20 foot long mishoon (dugout canoe) using traditional methods. Led by Imagine Studios\, Darius Coombs of the Mashpee Wampanoag and Jonathan Petty of the Aquinnah Wampanoag will carve over successive weekends. Sponsored by the New England Foundation for the Arts\, and with in-kind support from New England Development\, the goal is to launch on Indigenous Peoples Day on Oct. 11. \nWe hope you can join us.–James

DESCRIPTION:Educational Programming delivered in first person (Sandy IS Martha Washington\, as if it were 1784): Spend time with Mrs. Washington as she completes dressing for her day in this interactive and informative program. During the time together\, Mrs. Washington will share news of her family\, and how the current events that her husband is so deeply involved in impacts her family and her developing nation. \nIf you are interested in historic clothing\, and in a founding mother’s story\, this is the conversation for you! \nBio: Sandy Spector has been a Revolutionary War reenactor since 2000\, but now finds herself in her favorite role\, Martha Washington. She spends most of her time researching and interpreting Mrs. Washington and has been portraying Martha – alone or with George – in numerous states and venues for the past 12 years\, including the National Park Service’s Washington’s Headquarters’ in Cambridge\, MA\, Valley Forge\, PA\, Morristown\, NJ\, and Newburgh\, NY. As well\, she presents for museums\, classrooms\, libraries\, historical societies\, and various associations throughout the US. She is currently writing two books about Martha Washington and recreating Martha’s extant clothing to be used in future programming.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring manuscripts\, artifacts\, and rarely seen treasures\, this exhibition captures a monumental moment in American history.  \nIn 1776\, people grappled with ideas of liberty\, loyalty\, and the role of government in society. Private letters\, intimate diaries\, and newspaper accounts reveal how the Declaration of Independence grew from draft to founding document. 1776: Declaring Independence spotlights handwritten copies of the Declaration by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson as well as multiple early printings\, including a rare Dunlap broadside. On and off the page\, we explore how it echoed across the commonwealth and around the world\, reshaping the colonists’ chances of launching a new nation. How did the Declaration change Americans’ quest for liberty\, then and now?
