Their correspondence allows a window into the conflicts\, the struggles of the people\, the tedious nature of the Congress\, and a loving marriage. \nThis July\, we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of our nation. The letters of John and Abigail Adams reflect their lived experiences through this tumultuous time\, and allow us to witness history in the making. \nThis live theatrical performance provides an intimate setting geared toward adults and older children.

SUMMARY:Enslavement and Freedom: Elizabeth Freeman and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In 1781\, an enslaved woman named Elizabeth Freeman heard the words “all men are created equal” read aloud from the Declaration of Independence and resolved to claim that promise for herself and other enslaved people. Known as Mum Bett\, Freeman had been enslaved in Sheffield\, Massachusetts. She sought the help of Stockbridge attorney Theodore Sedgwick\, who filed a freedom suit on her behalf. The Great Barrington court ruled in her favor. Brom and Bett v. Ashley established a legal precedent that contributed to the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts. To this day\, Freeman’s story stands as one of the most consequential acts of self-liberation in American history; however\, her victory in that courtroom was not the end. It was a provocation—a call that echoes forward to a nation still measuring the distance between its founding ideals and the lives of its people. \nJoin us for a discussion moderated by Marcus P. Smith\, History and Interpretive Fellow of the W.E.B. Du Bois Freedom Center\, bringing together scholars\, historians\, and practitioners to interpret Freeman’s life and legacy\, examine the growing movement to honor her memory\, and ask what her courage demands of our understanding of liberty and equality in the present. \nBefore the program\, The Mount invites you to a special open house for our new exhibition\, A Wealth of Stories: Building Edith Wharton’s New York\, which uses the lens of Wharton’s family history to explore the flow of wealth and resources in New York City from the Revolutionary-era through the Gilded Age. Jacob and Nancy Bloom will share primary sources that reveal the course of these masters’ lives\, and illustrate how important dance was to colonial America. They also include information on Mary Cowley\, a dancing mistress in Newport\, Rhode Island\, who managed to avoid political entanglements\, and taught dancing to the Americans\, British\, and French.

SUMMARY:Dressing for the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Fashion\, clothing\, and textiles have emerged recently as important sources for better understanding our nation’s history. To mark Historic New England’s new exhibition\, Myth and Memory: Stories of the American Revolution\, we are bringing together scholars and curators from around New England to share stories about soldiers of color\, patriotic women\, and the Founding Fathers—and discussing what they wore and why it matters. The program features three presentations followed by a moderated Q&A with Nora Carleson\, Historic New England’s Curator of Fashion and Decorative Arts. \n-Dressing Cicero: Erica Lome\, Curator of Collections\, Historic New England\n-Purchasing Patriotism: Kimberly Alexander\, Director of Museum Studies and Senior Lecturer\, University of New Hampshire\n-Costuming the Revolution: Chloe Chapin\, Costume Designer\, Fashion Historian\, and Lecturer\, Harvard University. \nDoors open at 5:00 p.m. for refreshments. Through their letters and diaries\, learn how the war affected the day-to-day lives of the family of Josiah and Ann Quincy\, including their daughters Hannah\, Betsy\, and Nancy\, and daughter-in-law Abigail. The high social standing of the Quincy family and their many connections meant these women interacted with well-known figures like John and Abigail Adams\, Benjamin Franklin\, and the Marquis de Lafayette.
