SUMMARY:Liberty & Loyalty: Embroidered Coats of Arms in an Age of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join Erica Lome\, Curator of Collections at Historic New England for our spring Americana Lecture as she discusses “Liberty & Loyalty: Embroidered coats of arms in an age of revolution” at 4pm on May 4. A light reception will follow the lecture. \nIn 1775\, Mary Jones of Weston\, Massachusetts\, watched her life collapse around her as her family\, all supporters of the British Crown\, fled their homes and had their immense fortune confiscated during the Revolution. Among what she had left to remember them was a mostly finished needlework sampler displaying the Jones family coat of arms. Years later\, she returned to Massachusetts and settled in Concord\, where this sampler now resides in the collection of the Concord Museum. \nErica Lome uses this needlework as a starting point to survey the history of embroidered coats of arms worked in Boston in the late eighteenth century. More than an accomplishment of a genteel education\, young women used heraldic needlework to document their family genealogy\, a practice which endured through war\, exile\, and independence. SUMMARY:Abigail Adams & the Daughters of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:The time is January 1774. Carol Cohen\, playing the role of Abigail Adams\, invites a group of women to Boston for a “Spinning Bee”. These were meetings where the Daughters of Liberty gathered to discuss matters of concern to colonists while they spun yarn that could be woven into fabric. The audience is part of the meeting where Abigail introduces several of the women present such as historian and author Mercy Otis Warren\, poet Phillis Wheatley and Sarah Fulton the “mother” of the Boston Tea Party. \nThe interactive program includes both first person portrayal and multimedia presentation. Following an “up close visit” with Abigail Adams. Participants will learn more about her time in Boston in the years leading up to the Declaration of Independence. Included will be stories about women who joined Abigail as important players working along side her in forging a path to Independence from Britain. Those who attend will leave with a fresh perspective on the role of woman during the time leading up to the Declaration of Independence. \nLight refreshments will be served. This is an in-person event and will be held in the Fireplace South Gallery\, In Person at Woburn Public Library. The venue is fully ADA-compliant. \nThis program is offered by Woburn Public Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. DESCRIPTION:A dramatization of ‘A Gambrel Roof’\, a poem by Lucy Larcom. Reservations required $20pp. \nA creative multi-disciplinary theatrical presentation of a circa 1875 local poem about the historic Danvers Jeremiah Page House. Period music\, an art installation\, historic tea blends and signature cakes add to the illustration of the story: \nIn about 1770\, when the British monarchy started taxing tea in the colonies\, Jeremiah told Sarah that “no tea shall be drunk in this house”. However\, while her husband was away one day\, Sarah and two friends secretly had their tea ON the roof of the house. In Sarah’s words\, “Upon a house is not within it”\, so she was still obeying her husband’s wishes. This story was told to Anne L. Page\, Jeremiah’s granddaughter\, by a family friend many years later. Anne then told it to her friend Lucy Larcom\, the famous Beverly poet. Lucy romanticized the story in the poem “A Gambrel Roof” written as the 100th birthday of our nation approached and published in the Atlantic Monthly.

An indentured servant by age five\, Deborah grew up in a man’s world\, where women were naught but second-class British subjects. As a self-educated\, masterless woman\, she felt a higher calling\, and in the final years of the American War for Independence\, Deborah bound her chest\, tied back her hair\, and enlisted in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment of the Continental Army\, as “Robert Shurtlieff.” \nA Revolution of Her Own! takes you back in time! \nJUDITH “JUDE” KALAORA \nFounder & Artistic Director \nHistory At Play™ \nJudith is a professional educator & living historian. She graduated from Syracuse University Magna cum Laude and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting\, along with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Literature\, Language\, & Culture. Judith completed the Globe Education Program at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. She founded History At Play™\, LLC (HAP) in 2010 to chronicle the lives of influential and often forgotten figures. She researches\, writes\, produces\, & performs original productions and has a repertoire of over 16 performances. In 2024\, Judith was 1 of just over 100 civilians to attend the National Security Seminar at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle\, PA. SUMMARY:Manchester in 1775 — Manchester\, The Revolution\, and The War at Sea
DESCRIPTION:For the upcoming 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the Manchester-by-the-Sea Museum is preparing to tell the story of “Manchester\, The Revolution\, and The War at Sea\,” and the opening day on Saturday\, May 31\, will specially feature living history with the Ladies Association of Revolutionary America interpreting Manchester in 1775. \nThe exhibit intends to create a better understanding of the town’s heritage\, specifically the story of Manchester men during the Revolutionary War\, as it was fought at sea\, with additional information about the war at land and home. After opening May 31\, it will run through September\, and it will be reprised next year for the national semiquincentennial in 2026. \nThe Essex National Heritage Commission is the primary grant sponsor of this project. \nThe exhibit intends to create a better understanding of the town’s heritage\, specifically the story of Manchester men during the Revolutionary War\, as it was fought at sea\, with additional information about the war at land and home. \nEVENT COST: \nAdmission cost for the opening and the exhibit is the same as regular self-guided tours of the Museum: $5 for individuals\, $10 for groups 2+; guided tours of the Museum are also available by request at the door at an additional cost (+$10).  Museum members are free along with youth 16 and under.
