DESCRIPTION:Born in 1731 to a respected Marshfield family\, Nathaniel Ray Thomas rose to become a leading figure in his community – a Harvard-educated merchant\, gentleman farmer\, justice of the peace\, and one of the most prominent Tories in all of New England. \nWhen the winds of independence swept through the colonies\, Thomas remained loyal to Crown and King\, choosing allegiance to Britain. His grand estate quartered British troops. His home served as a headquarters for Loyalist resistance. SUMMARY:Parmenter Family of Sudbury: From English Origins to the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sudbury History Center and Museum on September 17th for a lecture on the early history of the Parmenter Family of Sudbury by descendant Ralph Parmenter Bennett! \nIn 1639\, Deacon John Parmenter courageously voyaged across the Atlantic from England with his wife and two children and was one of the original proprietors of Sudbury\, Massachusetts. His descendants made important contributions to the town since its incorporation\, valiantly fought in the American Revolutionary War\, and the name is still proudly carried to this day. \nRalph Parmenter Bennett\, one of these descendants\, is an authority on the family genealogy and history and has published extensively researched articles on the Parmenters in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. In this talk\, he will discuss highlights from their English origins\, their settling in Sudbury\, and their participation in the Revolution in this celebratory year of America250.

DESCRIPTION:In 1770 Colonel Josiah Quincy I built the current Quincy House. Colonel Quincy and his son Josiah strongly supported independence\, but his son Samuel was a Loyalist\, and the American Revolution divided the family forever. Learn about their lives and their relationship\, then re-enact the Boston Massacre trial\, where Josiah Jr. defended the British soldiers while Samuel prosecuted them. \nAges 8-14\nNo registrations will be accepted on the day of the program. One adult per family admitted free. \nIt is not a drop-off program – children must be accompanied by an adult. Strollers and backpack carriers are not permitted in the house museums.
