SUMMARY:Scottish Prisoners of War in Reading and Beyond During the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join the Reading Public Library and Reading Antiquarian Society as Chris Hall presents his talk on Scottish Prisoners of War in Reading and Beyond During the American Revolution. \nIn June 1776\, the 71st Regiment of Foot\, British Army soldiers from the highlands of Scotland\, were captured by American privateers in Boston Harbor. The regiment\, along with their families\, servants\, and families of their servants\, were imprisoned and paroled across Massachusetts. The Lieutenant Colonel of this regiment\, Archibald Campbell\, was paroled at the Parker Tavern in Reading\, and his Officers were paroled in an encampment nearby. This talk will investigate the contextual wartime dynamic during which this regiment was kept as prisoners of war\, and the effect it had on Patriots\, Loyalists\, and everyday people in Reading\, and across Massachusetts. \nThe program will begin at 1:30\, but come early to mingle with other history buffs! \nThe talk will be given by Christopher Hall\, the caretaker at Parker Tavern. He also works in other capacities for the National Park Service as a historical interpreter in Boston.

SUMMARY:American Disunion: An Evening with David Blight
DESCRIPTION:Join Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Blight for a compelling forum on the evolving meaning of American independence. Drawing on his scholarship on Frederick Douglass\, Blight will explore how the ideals of the Declaration of Independence have been interpreted and contested over time. \nProfessor Blight will discuss Frederick Douglass’s 1852 speech\, “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?”. Through Douglass’s words\, Blight invites us to reflect on the enduring tensions between liberty and inequality\, and to consider whether the nation’s founding promises remain unfulfilled.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Dwellings – Homes of Patriots and Loyalists in Mhd.
DESCRIPTION:An estimated 300 houses survive in Marblehead\, MA from before the time of the American Revolution (even if modified by later generations) out of perhaps 525 or so that existed as the war began\, when Marblehead was still the sixth most populous metropolis in British North America. And because it is estimated that more than 1\,400 men and boys from the densely populated town of about 950 families — (all living in those 525 houses !) — served in the Revolutionary War from the beginning through its end\, nearly every house in Marblehead that predates 1775 was therefore the home of a Revolutionary serviceman. In June 1775\, nearly 600 men and teenage boys joined the Continental Army’s new “Marblehead Regiment” as unemployment at sea swelled the ranks of the town’s already overwhelmingly rebel militia. And starting in Autumn 1775\, hundreds of them would sail out as captains and crews of privateer vessels\, continuing throughout the war’s seven long years\, continuing into 1783. Many would lose their lives that way. Out of those 950 families\, only about a dozen heads of households can be identified as Tories\, or Loyalists. And nearly every house was filled with women and many children who suffered greatly. The town did not fully recover until the 1830s\, several generations later — which is why so many pre-Revolutionary homes survive.

SUMMARY:New England Sweets with Susan Mara Bregman
DESCRIPTION:A chocolate mill opened in Boston in the late 1700s\, setting the stage for New England’s enduring love affair with sweets. Over the following centuries\, the region has become home to an extraordinary variety of baked\, fried\, dipped\, sugared\, and frozen confections. Massachusetts gave us candy classics like Necco Wafers\, Sky Bars\, and Junior Mints. From Fluffernutters to whoopie pies\, Susan Mara Bregman explores this sugary legacy\, uncovering the stories behind the treats that sweetened New England’s culinary landscape. \nThe event is co-sponsored by Langley-Adams Library and Nichols Village. The program will be in the auditorium at Nichols Village\, 1 Nichols Way\, Groveland\, MA. Enter through the auditorium\, not the main entrance. \nThis program is part of the Revolutionary Library Crawl. Information on the Revolutionary Library Crawl available here:\nhttps://hwlibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Revolutionary-Library-Crawl-Passport.pdf \nBregman is the author of the following books: New England Neon\, New England Candlepin Bowling and Along Route 1: Maine\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:George Washington's First Spy
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the secret world of America’s original spies\, moles\, infiltrators\, leaks and other espionage in and around Boston at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Don’t miss out on this unique chance to uncover the fascinating spy tales that helped shape a nation. \nTwelve days after arriving in Massachusetts as the new commander-in-chief of the Continental Army\, George Washington paid a man to go into Boston and secretly report on British “movements; designs.” For two centuries that person’s name remained hidden. Recent research reveals that he was John Carnes\, a grocer with an unusual past: he had started his career in the 1750s as Stoneham’s minister. This talk uncovers Carnes’s background\, his role in the first Continental spy network\, and what happened to him when the British commander had his own spy among the Massachusetts Patriots. \nSponsored by the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum and the Stoneham Historical Commission\, the talk is free and open to the public (donations welcome). Doors open at 6:45 for museum viewing before the talk\, with a brief business meeting at 7:15 and the speaker at 7:30 pm. Free street parking available. Public transport is the #132 bus + a 5-minute walk. \nAbout the speaker: J.L. Bell is the author of The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War and a book-length study of Gen. George Washington’s work in Cambridge for the National Park Service. He maintains the Boston1775 website\, sharing history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about Revolutionary New England.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Narratives: From Broadsides to Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:The American Revolution has been contested since its very beginning. During the Revolution\, contemporaries looking to understand what independence meant had to shift through disinformation and journalism rife with as many opinions as today. In the war’s aftermath\, narratives of the Revolution went through continuous reinterpretations in response to political and social changes. From the Civil War to the Cold War and newsrooms to Hollywood\, Americans looked to the Revolutionary era to debate and define what it meant to be an American\, with often divisive results. Now\, during the 250th anniversary of the Revolution\, Jordan Taylor and Michael Hattem will examine commentary in Revolutionary-era newspapers and broadsides\, consider how understanding of American independence has changed over time\, and reflect on how the public sees the nation’s founding today. \nThis is a hybrid event. FREE for MHS Members. $10 per person fee (in person). No charge for virtual attendees or Card to Culture participants (EBT\, WIC\, and ConnectorCare). The in-person reception starts at 5:30 and the program will begin 6:00 PM. \nPlease visit here to register: https://www.masshist.org/events/revolutionary-narratives-fiori
