SUMMARY:Lecture: Celebrating the Centennial in 19th Century Boston
DESCRIPTION:What did the American Revolution mean to Bostonians 100 years later? \nIn 1876\, Boston celebrated the centennial of American independence in the backdrop of a country still scarred and divided by the Civil War. The centennial was a chance to celebrate the Revolution as a moment of national unity\, but also raised the issue of whose history was going to be remembered. \nLearn how nineteenth-century Bostonians remembered and mythologized the Revolution\, and what the centennial celebrations reveal about how Victorians chose to understand America’s past in this lecture presented by Dr. Trent Taylor at the Gibson House Museum in Boston’s Back Bay.
