SUMMARY:Westford REV 250: Join Westford Town Historian\, Bob Oliphant for a revolutionary walking tour of Westlawn Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:About 400 people are buried in Westlawn Cemetery\, primarily from the 1700s and 1800s\, many of whom were members of Westford’s First Parish Church. It is the final resting place for many of the town’s founders\, veterans\, industrialists\, and farmers\, with notable family names like Prescott\, Robinson\, and Fletcher. \nColonel John Robinson (1735-1805) is the most distinguished burial\, Westford’s highest-ranking Revolutionary War officer. He led Westford Minutemen to the North Bridge in Concord on April 19\, 1775\, participating in “the shot heard ’round the world.” Robinson also fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. \nAlongside him are about 15 other Revolutionary War veterans\, marked by iron Maltese crosses placed by the Sons of the American Revolution in 1902\, veterans from the French and Indian War\, two soldiers from the War of 1812\, and nine Civil War soldiers. \nRobert “Bob” Oliphant\, a local historian in Westford\, originally hails from Oberlin\, Ohio\, where he studied metallurgy and materials science in college. He discovered his passion for genealogy during this time. After moving to Westford with his wife\, Bonnie\, and their three sons eight years post-graduation\, he became involved in local history. He has served on the Westford Historical Commission\, the Westford Museum and Historical Society board\, and various town committees. Oliphant authored The Westford Gazetteer\, conducted research for the Westford Historical Society\, wrote the “Museum Musing” column for the Westford Eagle\, and submitted weekly transcripts from Westford Wardsman to the Westford Historical Society webpage.

DESCRIPTION:The Prudence Wright Chapter\, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Pepperell 250th Anniversary Committee are pleased to announce a re-enactment of the “The Women Who Guarded the Bridge” on May 3\, 2025. \nPreviously re-enacted by the Town’s Covered Bridge Committee in 2010 at the Grand Re-Opening of the Pepperell Covered Bridge and by the DAR in Pepperell’s annual Fourth of July Parade\, this historic event is back again by popular demand. \nThe re-enactment features Pepperell’s local heroine Prudence Wright\, who assembled a band of women dressed in men’s clothing to guard the bridge over the Nashua River in Pepperell\, during the start of the Revolutionary War. Their strong will and bravery resulted in the capture of a British spy in late April of 1775. \nThe 2025 re-enactment will take place at the Prudence Wright Scenic Overlook\, alongside the historic Pepperell Covered Bridge\, on land owned by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife. The Prudence Wright Overlook and the Pepperell Covered Bridge are symbols of the struggles and successes that occurred outside the battlefields of Lexington\, Concord and Boston during our ancestors’ fight for America’s independence. The city’s rich and storied history of innovation in a wide variety of realms has made Cambridge “revolutionary” both before and after the War for Independence\, and provides historical perspective on how we are continuing to live into our Revolutionary ideals. \nIn this series of neighborhood tours\, Weintraub and Kuchta will explore some of the people\, places\, and events featured in their book and discuss how this small city became a thriving center for creativity in many sectors. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 21\, 2025 (Patriot’s Day Holiday)\nOpen House: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM \nHistoric New England invites you walk Lincoln’s trails and visit two of its properties in Lincoln\, Massachusetts: \n– The Codman Estate\, home to five generations of the Chambers/Russell/Codman family.\n– The Walter Gropius House\, home to a revolutionary architect. \nCodman Estate\, c. 1740\n34 Codman Road\, Lincoln\, MA\nhttps://www.historicnewengland.org/property/codman-estate/\nHome to five generations of the Chambers/Russell/Codman family (1708 – 1968)\, in the 18th century the estate was the largest farm in the area with the largest number of enslaved people laboring on it. At the time of the Revolutionary War\, it was owned by Loyalists\, Dr. Charles and Elizabeth Russell\, who fled to Antigua when the war began. \nGropius House\, 1938\n68 Baker Bridge Road\, Lincoln\, MA \nHome \n\nExplore a revolution! Walter Gropius\, founder of the German design school known as the Bauhaus\, was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Modest in scale\, the 1938 Gropius family home was revolutionary in impact. In keeping with Bauhaus philosophy\, every aspect of the house and its surrounding landscape was planned for maximum efficiency and simplicity of design. \nThese two remarkable properties will be open to the public from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Monday\, April 21\, 2025. Docents will be on site to share information and answer questions. Admission is FREE\, although donations are always appreciated! \nGetting there:\n– Both houses are within walking distance of Lincoln’s MBTA Commuter Rail Station (Fitchburg line). Between Thursday\, April 17 and Tuesday\, April 22\, 2025\, special trail markers starting from the station will lead you on public walking trails through the woods to both houses. Hear the fascinating story of Dallin’s battle to complete his famous monument to Paul Revere in Boston’s North End. SUMMARY:North Bridge Program (Minute Man NHP)
DESCRIPTION:Commemorate Patriots’ Day with a National Park Service program marking the “shot heard round the world.” \nOn April 19\, 1775 British Regular soldiers search the town of Concord\, Massachusetts for stockpiles of illegal military supplies. When nearly 200 Regulars crossed Concord’s North Bridge and headed for the farm of militia Colonel James Barrett\, they left 96 men to guard the important river crossing. Meanwhile\, hundreds of local militia soldiers gathered on the hillside opposing the bridge. Those soldiers from Concord\, Lincoln\, Acton\, Bedford\, Westford\, and elsewhere watched as the British searched their homes and eventually lit fires to burn military supplies. Afraid the Regulars would burn the town\, the militia decided to act. They marched down the long causeway to a confrontation with British Soldiers guarding the bridge and ignited the American Revolution. Join Park Rangers as they mark the 250th Anniversary with a special ranger walk in the footsteps of those minute men and militia. \n8:30 am- Special Ranger Walk begins at the North Bridge Visitor Center \nParking:\nCheck back soon for more details. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Friends of Minute Man National Park
