SUMMARY:Concord250 Exhibit: "Liberation Textiles: Our Social Fabric" Opens at Concord Art
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Liberation Textiles: Our Social Fabric\, April 3 – May 11 in the Main Gallery\, curated by Elizabeth Thach and Camilø Álvårez\nCurators Tour Thursday April 3 at 5 PM (opening reception starts at 5:30 PM that evening) \nArtist Demo: A Sense of Touch – Tapestry Weaving with Sam Fields Wednesday\, April 16th\, 10:30 AM – 12 PM \nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and is scheduled to coincide with the town’s celebration of Patriots Day. It will primarily feature fiber-based visual art. To give you a sense of the creative direction\, here’s an excerpt from what the curator has written about the show: \n“When we talk about ‘social fabric’ the metaphor is apt because of the various ways that individual lives overlap [like threads] and are supported by other lives to create a unified garment… We participate in elections\, but we also participate in economic systems\, familial networks\, and larger social communities. Communal life is always a negotiation between individual freedom and the needs of the social fabric that supports and makes individual freedom possible… Making art is one of the purest expressions of personal freedom that the individual can participate in\, but the work that artists make as individuals is influenced by artists’ economic\, cultural\, and communal realities… Communities support and participate in the individual’s freedom when they view the art that individuals make. It is a critical mistake to think that art can exist in a vacuum\, or that individuals can be free without the supports and infrastructure of a healthy community.”

SUMMARY:Concord Museum: "Whose Revolution" Special Exhibition Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Whose Revolution: Special Exhibition Opening Day \nMarch 28\, 2025 \nThe first of three 250th special exhibitions at the Concord Museum\, Whose Revolution will highlight the competing and contradictory meanings of revolution during the period leading up to the war. Through maps\, documents\, furniture\, and other objects\, this exhibition will explore the gradual shifts that led to broader support for independence. It will examine the experiences of Loyalists and the work of building consensus. It will also emphasize the experiences of enslaved people and Indigenous communities to examine questions of liberty\, sovereignty\, and protest during the period. Through objects and media installations\, this exhibition will feature the different meanings of revolution for the individuals living through this period\, revealing how the idea of declaring independence from England was far from inevitable and developed only gradually. \nTo commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the Concord Museum will offer ongoing opportunities to gather as a community\, reflect on the founding of our nation\, and engage with the significance of our shared past for our present moment. Highlights will include three new special exhibitions\, a special speaker series\, a published catalog\, and expanded educational resources. Together\, these initiatives will showcase the incredible stories behind the eyewitness objects held at the Museum to illuminate the many different ways people experienced\, shaped\, and remembered the Revolution.

SUMMARY:"Spies Among Us" year long exhibit opening on February 6th 2025
DESCRIPTION:“Spies Among Us” will open on Thursday\, February 6th at 10 a.m. during the museum’s first Thursday opening hours. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 6th and will be open every Thursday going forward from 10-4. We will also showcase the exhibit during our February Second Sunday Open House on Sunday\, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe exhibit will recall the story of General Gage’s spies who visited the Tavern in 1775\, explore examples of espionage on both sides\, and examine the many ways of spying that were used during the American Revolution. \nSpycraft played a pivotal role during the American Revolution\, with both the Continental Army and British forces using intelligence operations to gain strategic advantages. The Golden Ball Tavern and its proprietor Isaac Jones\, played host on a few occasions to British spies sent\, by General Thomas Gage\, to survey the towns that were scattered around the area from Boston to Worcester. This was just one of the British military’s tactics for keeping the Patriots in line. On the American side\, espionage was essential in countering the British military’s superior resources and manpower. \nThe spycraft of the American Revolution was marked by its ingenuity\, the use of civilian networks\, and the blending of military and civilian espionage tactics. Though it was often risky and unreliable\, intelligence-gathering operations played a critical role in the eventual success of the American cause\, allowing the Continental Army to take advantage of British vulnerabilities and ultimately secure victory. \nJoin us as we introduce our new exhibit and our new Thursday opening hours. The museum will continue to be open every second Sunday of the month for our Second Sunday Open House Tours and will now be open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\nWe look forward to welcoming you!

SUMMARY:Leslie’s Retreat: Salem on the Brink of Revolution Exhibit Opening Reception and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Before Lexington and Concord\, there was “Leslie’s Retreat” – a confrontation between Salem residents and British soldiers in February 1775. Essex Heritage and its partners are inviting the public and media members to learn about this historic event\, which is part of ongoing efforts to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. \nOn February 26\, 1775\, British Colonel Alexander Leslie brought troops to Salem\, MA to confiscate reported cannons. What he found was a community on edge. Militia members and local citizens blocked access over the North River Bridge preventing the soldiers from completing their search. Though a peaceful agreement was reached\, the standoff highlights the growing tensions that led to the American Revolution. \nLeslie’s Retreat: Salem on the Brink of Revolution\, an upcoming exhibit at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center (2 New Liberty Street\, Salem)\, will explore the significance of “Leslie’s Retreat” in American history and the changing legacy of the event over time. This exhibit is a joint effort between the Essex National Heritage Area\, Salem Maritime National Historic Site\, and Minute Man National Historical Park. The free exhibit will be on display from February 21 to April 27\, Wednesday to Sunday\, 10 am to 4 pm. \nAn opening reception and lecture for the exhibit will be held Friday\, February 21 at 5 pm at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center. Salem Maritime National Historic Site curator Dr. Emily Murphy will present the free lecture at 6:30 pm. The reception is presented by Essex National Heritage Area\, Salem Maritime National Historic Site\, and Eastern National. \nThis exhibit is also part of a city-wide effort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Leslie’s Retreat. More information about community events can be found at https://www.salem400.org/leslies-retreat/ and https://essexheritage.org/rev250/

SUMMARY:Congregationalists and the American Revolution: A Virtual Collections Tour
DESCRIPTION:Congregational churches could be found in nearly every town across New England in the 1770s. The stories of Patriot ministers who inspired their congregations to Revolution have long been told. Increasingly we are learning more about the experience of the people sitting in the pews and how being part of a Congregational church community shaped their experience of the celebrated ideals–and the sometimes harsh realities–of the revolutionary cause. Printed sermons\, pamphlets\, and histories; manuscript church and association records; and even paintings in the CLA’s collection help tell a story that is both familiar and not. \nThis December we reprise our popular tour of original materials related to the American Revolution with Executive Director Dr. Kyle Roberts and New England’s Hidden Histories Project Director Dr. Tricia Peone. Recognizing that not everyone can make it to 14 Beacon Street for an in-person viewing\, this tour will be hosted on Zoom\, and registration will be limited to small group of attendees. \nSee Revolutionary-era treasures from the collections\, hear stories about how Congregationalists experienced the period leading up to\, during\, and immediately following the war\, and reflect on what this pivotal event means 250 years later. \nSpace is limited. Please register by Monday\, December 2nd via this link: https://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/CongregationalLibrary/AmRevVirtual.html. \nThe cost to attend is $20 for current CLA members and $25 for non-members. \nIf you are interested in becoming a member of the Congregational Library & Archives\, you can learn more and join on our website. \nFor more information\, please email programs@14beacon.org. \nThis program is part of Revolutionary Stories\, New England’s Hidden Histories’ ongoing series on the American Revolution and the Congregational experience. \nSPEAKER BIOS \nDr. Kyle Roberts was appointed the Executive Director of the Congregational Library & Archives in 2022. He received his BA in American Studies from Williams College and his PhD in History from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to coming to the CLA\, he was Associate Director of Library & Museum Programming at the American Philosophical Society and Associate Professor of Public History and New Media and Director of the Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities at Loyola University Chicago. \nA scholar of Atlantic World religion\, print\, and library history\, he is the author of Evangelical Gotham: Religion and the Making of New York City\, 1783-1860 (Chicago\, 2016)\, the co-editor\, with Stephen Schloesser\, of Crossings and Dwellings: Restored Jesuits\, Women Religious\, American Experience 1814-2014 (Brill\, 2017) and\, with Mark Towsey\, of Before the Public Library: Reading\, Community\, and Identity in the Atlantic World\, 1650-1850 (Brill\, 2017). \nKyle is an accomplished public historian and digital humanist whose collaborative projects include the Jesuit Libraries Provenance Project\, the Maryland Loyalism Project\, and Dissenting Academies Online: Virtual Library System.
