SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Patriots of Color\, a new exhibit in the Family Heritage Experience at American Ancestors\, sheds light on the overlooked histories of Black\, Native\, and multiracial men and women who fought\, labored\, and led in the struggle for American independence across all thirteen colonies. Through documents\, personal narratives\, and digital interactives\, the exhibition uncovers the courage and resilience of those whose contributions helped shape a new nation\, even as they continued to confront inequality and enslavement. \nBridging past and present\, Patriots of Color highlights the voices of descendants who are reclaiming these stories today—connecting revolutionary ideals of freedom and justice to the ongoing pursuit of equality in America. \nEntrance to the exhibit is included in admission to the Family Heritage Experience and can be purchased either in person or online.

SUMMARY:1776: Declaring Independence
DESCRIPTION:Featuring manuscripts\, artifacts\, and rarely seen treasures\, this exhibition captures a monumental moment in American history. \nIn 1776\, people grappled with ideas of liberty\, loyalty\, and the role of government in society. Private letters\, intimate diaries\, and newspaper accounts reveal how the Declaration of Independence grew from draft to founding document. 1776: Declaring Independence spotlights handwritten copies of the Declaration by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson as well as multiple early printings\, including a rare Dunlap broadside. On and off the page\, we explore how it echoed across the commonwealth and around the world\, reshaping the colonists’ chances of launching a new nation. How did the Declaration change Americans’ quest for liberty\, then and now? We invite visitors to trace the Declaration’s complex legacy as a national beacon for celebration and protest. \nCheck here for closures and more admission information: https://www.masshist.org/visit/hours-and-admission

SUMMARY:Foot of the Rocks Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Road Where It Happened: Revolution Comes to Menotomy\, Present Day Arlington\n• How did prehistoric geological forces create the landscape of Menotomy?\n• Did the narrow corridor of Battle Road between steep hillsides at the Foot of the Rocks influence\n the outcome of the American Revolution?\n• Who were the people of Menotomy who played a role on that critical day of April 19\, 1775?\nThese are some of the questions explored in this exhibit. \nThis exhibit will be on display at the Old Schwamb Mill. \nThe Old Schwamb Mill in Arlington\, Massachusetts\, is located on the oldest continuously operating mill site in the United States. Mills have been located on the main building site since the late 1600s. In 1971\, the Old Schwamb Mill was listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. The Mill is located at 17 Mill Lane in Arlington Heights.

SUMMARY:The Role of the Press in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:18th century newspapers and pamphlets were essential to the dissemination of information and were instrumental in fanning the flames of discord on both sides of the revolutionary conflict. However\, how did printers get their information? This interactive program\, with the added component of 18th century material culture items\, focuses on the incredible process of typesetting and the role that printing and propaganda played in the pivotal events leading up to the American Revolution. \nMichele Gabrielson is a local history teacher and historic interpreter of the 18th century. When she is not teaching in the classroom\, Michele can be found leading tours\, lectures\, and demonstrations at historic sites in the greater Boston area. She specializes in interpreting the history of colonial women printers\, the stories of loyalist refugees\, and of 18th century chocolate makers! Most recently\, she has taken on building a first-person impression of the revolutionary playwright and poet Mercy Otis Warren. Michele additionally serves as the secretary for the newly formed Mercy Otis Warren Society\, dedicated to helping preserve the contributions of Mercy\, is a member of the Authenticity Standards Committee for Minuteman National Historic Park\, and is the coordinator for the Battle Road Guides for the annual reenactment of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. She was awarded a 2024 Rising Star Award for Public History by the Massachusetts History Alliance for her programming titled\, “The Revolutionary Classroom\,” and named a finalist for the 2024 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year. She has been named the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution’s Outstanding History Teacher of the Year for 2025 and the 2025 winner of the Fred Graham Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati.
