DESCRIPTION:Born in 1731 to a respected Marshfield family\, Nathaniel Ray Thomas rose to become a leading figure in his community – a Harvard-educated merchant\, gentleman farmer\, justice of the peace\, and one of the most prominent Tories in all of New England. \nWhen the winds of independence swept through the colonies\, Thomas remained loyal to Crown and King\, choosing allegiance to Britain. His grand estate quartered British troops. His home served as a headquarters for Loyalist resistance. His unwavering principles made him both a respected leader among fellow Tories and a marked man among Patriots. \nThis presentation is based on the research of Cynthia Hagar Krusell and Betty Magoun Bates

SUMMARY:Drawing American Stories: A Workshop Series For Beginners and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:In this four-session class\, participants will be introduced to the fundamental elements of drawing practice.\nOur classroom will be the galleries of American Stories: Revolution to Rockwell\, the Museum’s summer exhibition commemorating the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. Each class will focus on a single drawing technique. We will study how different artists in the exhibition have used these techniques in their own work. Participants can try their hand at making their own drawings inspired by close observation of work on view in the Museum’s galleries. This process of studying and working directly from the work of other artists is one of the most time-honored ways artists have educated themselves and developed their technical skills. \nMaterials are included. Those who prefer to work with their own sketchbooks are welcome— please note that only graphite pencils are allowed in the galleries. \nRecommended for ages 16+ \nInstructor: Artist Caren Kinne is Manager of Learning and Engagement at Norman Rockwell Museum and has a BFA in painting and a master’s in art education. Her work has been exhibited in non -profit and commercial galleries across the US and in Italy. Kinne is an enthusiastic and supportive educator. She taught a popular outdoor pastel workshop at the Museum recently and looks forward to welcoming new art students to the Museum this summer.

Through archival research and storytelling\, she continues to uncover new details about the estate and its former owners. \nDavid Martin\, Ph.D.\, is Professor/Dean Emeritus from Gallaudet University. Since retiring to Cape Cod\, he has served as past president of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society and currently serves as president of the Marstons Mills Historical Society. He chaired the committee behind a new 27-author book on the American Revolution on Cape Cod and the Islands. \nEach lecture is complimentary and open to resort guests. DESCRIPTION:Staged at Historic Deerfield\, A Stake in the Ground: 1774 is a series of three site-specific plays\, set in Deerfield\, MA\, on the eve of the American Revolution. Each performance includes all three plays and will end with a post-show conversation.  \nIn the summer of 1774\, seeds of revolution begin to germinate in Deerfield when a Liberty Pole is brought to town. The characters in three new one-act plays explore the political divisions\, tangled family relations\, and the complexities of enslavement from all sides. Join this vibrant\, immersive examination of the historical split that will define America. \nProduced by Plays in Place\, written by Talya Kingston\, Valyn Lyric Turner\, and Patrick Gabridge\, and directed by Brianna Sloane\, “A Stake In The Ground: 1774” will be performed outdoors at the locations* near where the characters lived in the past\, including outside the Ashley House\, the Allen House\, and the Stebbins House. \nLocation & Logistics: The production is performed outdoors at the locations near where the characters lived in 1774\, including the Ashley House\, the Allen House\, and the Stebbins House. * \nWeather Policy: Shows take place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather\, the production will move indoors to the Deerfield Community Center. \nAccessibility: Most performances (except for the weekend of July 31–August 2) are held outside. DESCRIPTION:Staged at Historic Deerfield\, A Stake in the Ground: 1774 is a series of three site-specific plays\, set in Deerfield\, MA\, on the eve of the American Revolution. Each performance includes all three plays and will end with a post-show conversation.  \nIn the summer of 1774\, seeds of revolution begin to germinate in Deerfield when a Liberty Pole is brought to town. The characters in three new one-act plays explore the political divisions\, tangled family relations\, and the complexities of enslavement from all sides. Join this vibrant\, immersive examination of the historical split that will define America. \nProduced by Plays in Place\, written by Talya Kingston\, Valyn Lyric Turner\, and Patrick Gabridge\, and directed by Brianna Sloane\, “A Stake In The Ground: 1774” will be performed outdoors at the locations* near where the characters lived in the past\, including outside the Ashley House\, the Allen House\, and the Stebbins House. \nLocation & Logistics: The production is performed outdoors at the locations near where the characters lived in 1774\, including the Ashley House\, the Allen House\, and the Stebbins House. * \nWeather Policy: Shows take place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather\, the production will move indoors to the Deerfield Community Center. \nAccessibility: Most performances (except for the weekend of July 31–August 2) are held outside. The audience will walk to each location along paved\, municipally-owned sidewalks and will be seated on folding chairs on grassy surfaces. \nJoin us for this vibrant and immersive exploration of the seeds of revolution!
