SUMMARY:Salt and Survival: The Untold Story of the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:School lessons about the American Revolution often focus on the Boston Tea Party—but far fewer people learn about the importance of salt.\nCod fishing\, Cape Cod’s biggest industry\, relied on salt for preserving fish for export.  British blockades\,  designed to cripple coastal communities\, were preventing salt being imported. \nIn response\, colonists relied on the sun and their ingenuity. Captain John Sears of Dennis designed the first saltworks\, using solar evaporation to produce the salt essential for preserving fish and eliminating the dependance on imported goods. \nAt the Jericho Historical Center discover the history of the first saltworks\, explore a detailed model\, see a demonstration of solar evaporation\, and view photographs and early artifacts.  \nIn addition\, tour an historic full cape house built in 1801\, and occupied by the Baker family until 1955\, containing 19th century furnishings\, textiles\, paintings and keepsakes.  In the barn\, tools and equipment from the 1800s are displayed\, as well as a carriage that raced at Riverside Trotting Park. The General Store is a reminder of the important role such gathering places played in the community’s economic and social life. Of special interest is the cranberry exhibit which tells the 200-year-old story of cranberry cultivation; an industry that began in Dennis in 1816!

Cambridge Carnival we will celebrate the revolutionary legacies of Afro-Caribbean and African American communities. The theme draws on the origins of the Carnival tradition in Trinidad and Tobago\, where enslaved Africans\, denied the right to celebrate their heritage\, created secret festivities to mock their oppressors. This act of resistance and cultural assertion is central to the 2026 Carnival\, honoring these legacies while connecting them to the broader struggle for freedom.\nMasqueraders and revelers will represent the vibrant resistance of enslaved peoples and their cultural pride\, inspired by the legacy and contributions to Massachusetts’ revolutionary heritage. Through their letters and diaries\, learn how the war affected the day-to-day lives of the family of Josiah and Ann Quincy\, including their daughters Hannah\, Betsy\, and Nancy\, and daughter-in-law Abigail. The high social standing of the Quincy family and their many connections meant these women interacted with well-known figures like John and Abigail Adams\, Benjamin Franklin\, and the Marquis de Lafayette. DESCRIPTION:Each year we meet hundreds\, if not thousands\, of individuals who can trace their family line back to the Salem witch trials. We often tell visitors that the English colonists of 1692 were the founding fathers and mothers of our country. They were themselves descended from the earliest settlers\, who were establishing a new country and took the biblical instruction “be fruitful and multiply” to heart. \nIt is fascinating to consider the many connections between the Salem witch trials and the Revolutionary War generation\, particularly the one most often referred to as our “Founding Fathers.” Part II of our Rev250 lecture series will focus on four more notable connections\, including witchcraft skeptic Robert Calef\, Ipswich court clerk Thomas Wade\, condemned witch Mary Bradbury\, and accuser Bathsheba Pope.  \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 17th at 1:00 pm for this free\, virtual program. SUMMARY:Salt and Survival: The Untold Story of the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:School lessons about the American Revolution often focus on the Boston Tea Party—but far fewer people learn about the importance of salt.\nCod fishing\, Cape Cod’s biggest industry\, relied on salt for preserving fish for export.  British blockades\,  designed to cripple coastal communities\, were preventing salt being imported. \nIn response\, colonists relied on the sun and their ingenuity. Captain John Sears of Dennis designed the first saltworks\, using solar evaporation to produce the salt essential for preserving fish and eliminating the dependance on imported goods. \nAt the Jericho Historical Center discover the history of the first saltworks\, explore a detailed model\, see a demonstration of solar evaporation\, and view photographs and early artifacts.  \nIn addition\, tour an historic full cape house built in 1801\, and occupied by the Baker family until 1955\, containing 19th century furnishings\, textiles\, paintings and keepsakes.  In the barn\, tools and equipment from the 1800s are displayed\, as well as a carriage that raced at Riverside Trotting Park. The General Store is a reminder of the important role such gathering places played in the community’s economic and social life. Of special interest is the cranberry exhibit which tells the 200-year-old story of cranberry cultivation; an industry that began in Dennis in 1816!
