Of the midnight ride of…” Samuel Prescott? \nOn the evening of April 12\, 2025 join National Park Rangers as we commemorate and explore the true story of the famous midnight ride 250 years ago. On April 19th 1775 a midnight alarm spread across Massachusetts about the impending march of British soldiers from Boston to Concord. In 1860\, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow immortalized the story of Paul Revere and his midnight ride but what about the many other alarm riders that evening? \nContrary to Longfellow’s poem\, Revere never made it to Concord. A British patrol captured Revere and others at the boarder of Lexington and Lincoln\, Massachusetts near 1:00 am. Riding alongside Paul Revere\, Concord local Samuel Prescott made a daring horseback escape and spread the alarm onward. Prescott returned to the main road near Hartwell Tavern\, spreading the alarm to Lincoln before riding off to Concord. SUMMARY:Pole Capping Day - Colonial Reenactment of a Call to Patriots in Bedford
DESCRIPTION:Join the Bedford Minuteman Company and Minuteman Companies from the area as they converge on Willson Park in Bedford to commemorate the spirit and courage of the patriots who sparked the American Revolution. Pole Capping Day is considered the start of the Patriots Day celebration in the region. \nThe Liberty Pole Capping and Raising is a reenactment of a practice in Colonial America signifying dissatisfaction with varied rulings and conduct of the English government of that date. It is meant to be commemorative of the spirit of liberty exemplified by Bedfordians and other colonials in the early phases of the War for Independence. \nThis ceremony features a march\, displays of musketry\, and music of the period performed by the men and women of the many Minuteman Companies that come to participate. But the main event – which draws not only spectators\, but also the soldiers of His Majesty’s 10th Regiment of Foot\, intent on stopping the defiant rabble-rousing – is the raising of a tall wooden pole\, which is climbed by a Bedford Minuteman and affixed with a red knitted cap. \nAlong with the event\, there is a traditional Pancake breakfast and other activities to help kick off a Patriots Day celebration to remember.

SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Concord Band Performs Revolutionary Music at Spring Pops! Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Concord Band will present its spirited Spring Pops! concert on Friday\, April 11\, 2025\, at 7:00PM\, at 51 Walden Performing Arts Center. The program commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord as part of Concord250 festivities this year throughout the town of Concord. The concert features two compositions specially commissioned to honor the historic events of April 19\, 1775. \nNorth Bridge Portrait by noted composer and arranger Stephen Bulla was commissioned by the Concord Band. The composition builds on foreboding melodies leading to martial themes\, culminating in the fateful “shot heard ’round the world” at Concord’s North Bridge. The program also features Seeds of Revolution\, recently commissioned by the Lexington Bicentennial Band and composed by Daniel Lutz\, Director of University Bands at UMass Lowell. Seeds of Revolution depicts unfolding events and growing sentiments in Massachusetts leading up to April 19\, 1775. The performance continues with a march representing both historic towns\, aptly titled Concord and Lexington\, written by George Briggs\, former band director at Harvard University. \nThe Concord250 program concludes with Concord\, composed for the U.S. Marine Band by Clare Grundman\, incorporating traditional tunes from colonial New England\, “The White Cockade\,” William Billings’ “America\,” and “Yankee Doodle.” Grundman noted that “Yankee Doodle” was a very popular tune for jigs and country dances\, but for his composition he used 7/8 time for an exuberant and clever ending. \nMusic Director James O’Dell has also selected twenty-first century music representing the digital revolution\, drawn from video games and superhero movies. Epic Gaming Themes by Paul Murtha elevates classic video game soundtracks to the stature of film scores. Video Games Live\, by Marty O’Donnell\, includes excerpts from a Hollywood concert phenomenon celebrating music from video games that toured around the world from 2005 through 2015. This composition will be conducted by Concord Band clarinetist Jim Dorney\, who studied conducting at SUNY Geneseo. The Concord Band will perform Soundtrack Highlights from Guardians of the Galaxy\, arranged for band by Michael Brown. The powerful soundtrack is based on popular hits of the 1960s and 1970s\, which the film’s protagonist plays to remind him of his childhood on Earth. \nTickets to the Spring Pops concert are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. DESCRIPTION:The Battles of Lexington and Concord erupted on April 19\, 1775\, pitting the brave Massachusetts militia against the formidable British forces. This confrontation followed the dramatic Midnight Rides and the urgent Lexington Alarm\, which mobilized the countryside in preparation for the impending advance of British troops toward Concord. Tensions reached a breaking point when British soldiers opened fire on the steadfast Lexington militia\, igniting the sparks of the American Revolutionary War and ushering in a new era of struggle for independence. \nJoin Tom Tringale as he recounts the events of April 18-19\, 1775—the start of a revolution. \nTringale is a graduate of Salem State College with a degree in History. He has been involved in living History since 1995. He has helped organize numerous events around New England\, including planning the 250th anniversary of the Boston Massacre\, Battle Road\, and the British raids in Bristol\, Rhode Island (2028). He is a member of Claus’ Rangers\, an American Loyalist living history group based in New York\, and the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment\, an American Continental Regiment living history group from Easthampton\, MA. During Patriots’ Day weekend\, Tommy and several friends and fellow history enthusiasts worked together to portray Captain Edward Farmer’s Billerica Company. \nSuggested program donation of $10 per person

DESCRIPTION:Two hundred years ago\, on 19 April 1775\, American history changed. Colonial forces faced the British army at Lexington & Concord … and won. Word spread rapidly\, and two regiments of Plymouth “Minute Men\,” led by Colonel Theophilus Cotton\, rallied to the Patriot cause. For the next six years\, Plymoutheans participated in America’s battle for independence. \nAlthough not the site of any great battles\, nor the home of any triumphant generals\, Plymouth is filled with the stories of the lawmakers and lawyers whose rhetoric inspired the Patriot cause\, of the men who risked their lives and livelihood in military service\, and of the civilians who kept the home fires burning\, as well as of the Americans who\, valuing loyalty above all\, continued to support the King. DESCRIPTION:In October 1774\, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress ordered the towns across the colony to prepare for war with England. In response\, the colony entered a wartime phase that included creating minute companies\, stockpiling arms\, ammunition\, and equipment\, and establishing a defense network ready to mobilize if the redcoats marched from Boston into the countryside. \nJoin Alexander Cain as he discusses the colony’s response to the British threat of war and examines the Massachusetts militia and minute-man system on the eve of Lexington and Concord. \nAbout the Speaker:\nAlexander Cain\, JD\, graduated from Merrimack College in 1993 with a degree in economics and from the New England School of Law in 1996 with a juris doctorate. He directs a Merrimack Valley-based vocational program that introduces high school students to advanced manufacturing and skilled trades careers. Alex is a well-respected and highly sought-after speaker who frequently lectures on the military and social influences of 1775 Massachusetts. He has published multiple research articles that have shed new light on the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\, and the loyalist refugee experience during the American Revolution. For generations\, Newburyporters claimed to have been the first to protest onerous British tariffs by destroying tea imported from British India. Before Sam Adams’s band dunked that tea in Boston harbor\, as the Clipper City’s claim goes\, a sturdy shipwright sparked the Revolution when he rallied a local band to burn the offending tea in this town’s Market Square. Join historian and educator Bill Quigley\, who has examined this long-standing narrative\, to learn the truth of this history. It’s a tale of surprising twists. \nBill Quigley teaches history and directs the Writing Center at The Governor’s Academy. He’s the author of an award-winning Civil War history\, Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union (Kent State\, 2016)\, and he is working now on a book about the historically misrepresented Christiana “Riot” of 1851. DESCRIPTION:The Concord Orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, is thrilled to perform “American Heritage” concerts as part of the Concord250 celebration.  Performances are on Saturday\, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday\, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden.  We are excited to present a world premiere of A Beacon of Hope by Jeff Beal\, commissioned by the orchestra for the celebration!  Jeff Beal\, the composer of the new work\, is an Emmy-winning composer of soundtracks for films and television. \nOther American compositions on the program are Florence Price’s brilliant Symphony No. 3\, Leonard Bernstein’s festive Candide Overture\, and The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. \nWe look forward to performing with Richard Sebring\, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 and his own short work composed for the occasion\, The White Cockade. Richard Sebring remarks\, “It’s always a great pleasure to make music with my friends in the Concord Orchestra\, especially in 51 Walden\, the site of many artistic experiences in my youth. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Concord Town House to celebrate an auspicious moment in our history: March 29th marks 145 years to the day that Louisa May Alcott\, famed authoress of Little Women and hundreds of other literary works\, became the first woman of Concord to cast a vote in a Town election! \nJoin in the excitement within the very room in the Town House where voting took place\, support the brave band of 19 other women who also voted for School Committee on that triumphant day\, and revel in the newfound empowerment these women achieved by actively participating in democracy as never before! \nLeading the march to the ballot box will be Jan Turnquist – Executive Director of Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House\, world-renowned Living History portrayer of Miss Alcott\, and a Concord resident – who will also speak to and lead a discussion of the meaning of enfranchisement for Concord residents then and now. Also participating in the voting re-enactment will be Concord’s own Joe Palumbo\, portraying Judge Hoar — and hopefully you\, too! \nThis event\, which is dedicated to the ideals of liberty\, personal agency\, and universal suffrage\, is free and open to all. Light refreshments served.

SUMMARY:Whose Revolution: Special Exhibition Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:The first of three 250th special exhibitions at the Concord Museum\, Whose Revolution will highlight the competing and contradictory meanings of revolution during the period leading up to the war. Through maps\, documents\, furniture\, and other objects\, this exhibition will explore the gradual shifts that led to broader support for independence. It will examine the experiences of Loyalists and the work of building consensus. It will also emphasize the experiences of enslaved people and Indigenous communities to examine questions of liberty\, sovereignty\, and protest during the period. Through objects and media installations\, this exhibition will feature the different meanings of revolution for the individuals living through this period\, revealing how the idea of declaring independence from England was far from inevitable and developed only gradually.
