As taxes on everyday necessities like tea and textiles increased\, colonists found creative ways to resist by spinning their own cloth\, brewing herb- and fruit-based Liberty Tea\, and relying on homemade goods instead of British imports. \nJoin the 18th Century Cook Mike Smith\, spinner Zoe Lawson\, and several other traditional craftspeople on the Eustis Estate grounds for live demonstrations and hands-on activities that reveal how ordinary people turned everyday work into acts of resistance. This act of resistance and cultural assertion is central to the 2026 Carnival\, honoring these legacies while connecting them to the broader struggle for freedom.\nMasqueraders and revelers will represent the vibrant resistance of enslaved peoples and their cultural pride\, inspired by the legacy and contributions to Massachusetts’ revolutionary heritage. SUMMARY:Our Founding Mothers and Fathers: More Revolutionary War Connections to the Salem Witch Trials
DESCRIPTION:Each year we meet hundreds\, if not thousands\, of individuals who can trace their family line back to the Salem witch trials. We often tell visitors that the English colonists of 1692 were the founding fathers and mothers of our country. They were themselves descended from the earliest settlers\, who were establishing a new country and took the biblical instruction “be fruitful and multiply” to heart. \nIt is fascinating to consider the many connections between the Salem witch trials and the Revolutionary War generation\, particularly the one most often referred to as our “Founding Fathers.” Part II of our Rev250 lecture series will focus on four more notable connections\, including witchcraft skeptic Robert Calef\, Ipswich court clerk Thomas Wade\, condemned witch Mary Bradbury\, and accuser Bathsheba Pope.  \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 17th at 1:00 pm for this free\, virtual program. SUMMARY:Salt and Survival: The Untold Story of the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:School lessons about the American Revolution often focus on the Boston Tea Party—but far fewer people learn about the importance of salt.\nCod fishing\, Cape Cod’s biggest industry\, relied on salt for preserving fish for export.  British blockades\,  designed to cripple coastal communities\, were preventing salt being imported. \nIn response\, colonists relied on the sun and their ingenuity. Captain John Sears of Dennis designed the first saltworks\, using solar evaporation to produce the salt essential for preserving fish and eliminating the dependance on imported goods. \nAt the Jericho Historical Center discover the history of the first saltworks\, explore a detailed model\, see a demonstration of solar evaporation\, and view photographs and early artifacts.  \nIn addition\, tour an historic full cape house built in 1801\, and occupied by the Baker family until 1955\, containing 19th century furnishings\, textiles\, paintings and keepsakes.  In the barn\, tools and equipment from the 1800s are displayed\, as well as a carriage that raced at Riverside Trotting Park. The General Store is a reminder of the important role such gathering places played in the community’s economic and social life. Of special interest is the cranberry exhibit which tells the 200-year-old story of cranberry cultivation; an industry that began in Dennis in 1816!

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sudbury History Center and Museum on September 17th for a lecture on the early history of the Parmenter Family of Sudbury by descendant Ralph Parmenter Bennett! \nIn 1639\, Deacon John Parmenter courageously voyaged across the Atlantic from England with his wife and two children and was one of the original proprietors of Sudbury\, Massachusetts. His descendants made important contributions to the town since its incorporation\, valiantly fought in the American Revolutionary War\, and the name is still proudly carried to this day. \nRalph Parmenter Bennett\, one of these descendants\, is an authority on the family genealogy and history and has published extensively researched articles on the Parmenters in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. In this talk\, he will discuss highlights from their English origins\, their settling in Sudbury\, and their participation in the Revolution in this celebratory year of America250.

They depict stories of battles won\, hardships endured\, hometown and battleground heroes\, and the start of a long fight for liberty\, equality and justice.
