DESCRIPTION:Join us at 14 Beacon for a special tour of the CLA’s new in-person exhibition with New England’s Hidden Histories Project Director and “Sacred Rebellion” curator\, Dr. Tricia Peone. \nThe exhibition features many treasures from the CLA’s collections: sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters created by Massachusetts Congregationalists during and after the American Revolution. These objects reveal how Congregationalists understood their moral obligations to each other and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. \nAttendees will view the exhibition with the curator\, learn more about the objects on display\, and gain a deeper understanding of the stories behind the exhibition. The discussion will also explore the unfinished business of the Revolution and the meaning of its legacy today. \nSpace is limited. She holds a PhD in history from the University of New Hampshire with a specialization in the early modern Atlantic world and history of science.

SUMMARY:Westford REV 250: Join Westford Town Historian\, Bob Oliphant for a revolutionary walking tour of Westlawn Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:About 400 people are buried in Westlawn Cemetery\, primarily from the 1700s and 1800s\, many of whom were members of Westford’s First Parish Church. It is the final resting place for many of the town’s founders\, veterans\, industrialists\, and farmers\, with notable family names like Prescott\, Robinson\, and Fletcher. \nColonel John Robinson (1735-1805) is the most distinguished burial\, Westford’s highest-ranking Revolutionary War officer. He led Westford Minutemen to the North Bridge in Concord on April 19\, 1775\, participating in “the shot heard ’round the world.” Robinson also fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. \nAlongside him are about 15 other Revolutionary War veterans\, marked by iron Maltese crosses placed by the Sons of the American Revolution in 1902\, veterans from the French and Indian War\, two soldiers from the War of 1812\, and nine Civil War soldiers. \nRobert “Bob” Oliphant\, a local historian in Westford\, originally hails from Oberlin\, Ohio\, where he studied metallurgy and materials science in college. He discovered his passion for genealogy during this time. After moving to Westford with his wife\, Bonnie\, and their three sons eight years post-graduation\, he became involved in local history. He has served on the Westford Historical Commission\, the Westford Museum and Historical Society board\, and various town committees. Oliphant authored The Westford Gazetteer\, conducted research for the Westford Historical Society\, wrote the “Museum Musing” column for the Westford Eagle\, and submitted weekly transcripts from Westford Wardsman to the Westford Historical Society webpage.

SUMMARY:Liberty & Loyalty: Embroidered Coats of Arms in an Age of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join Erica Lome\, Curator of Collections at Historic New England for our spring Americana Lecture as she discusses “Liberty & Loyalty: Embroidered coats of arms in an age of revolution” at 4pm on May 4. A light reception will follow the lecture. \nIn 1775\, Mary Jones of Weston\, Massachusetts\, watched her life collapse around her as her family\, all supporters of the British Crown\, fled their homes and had their immense fortune confiscated during the Revolution. Among what she had left to remember them was a mostly finished needlework sampler displaying the Jones family coat of arms. Years later\, she returned to Massachusetts and settled in Concord\, where this sampler now resides in the collection of the Concord Museum. \nErica Lome uses this needlework as a starting point to survey the history of embroidered coats of arms worked in Boston in the late eighteenth century. More than an accomplishment of a genteel education\, young women used heraldic needlework to document their family genealogy\, a practice which endured through war\, exile\, and independence. SUMMARY:Abigail Adams & the Daughters of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:The time is January 1774. Carol Cohen\, playing the role of Abigail Adams\, invites a group of women to Boston for a “Spinning Bee”. These were meetings where the Daughters of Liberty gathered to discuss matters of concern to colonists while they spun yarn that could be woven into fabric. The audience is part of the meeting where Abigail introduces several of the women present such as historian and author Mercy Otis Warren\, poet Phillis Wheatley and Sarah Fulton the “mother” of the Boston Tea Party. \nThe interactive program includes both first person portrayal and multimedia presentation. Following an “up close visit” with Abigail Adams. Participants will learn more about her time in Boston in the years leading up to the Declaration of Independence. Included will be stories about women who joined Abigail as important players working along side her in forging a path to Independence from Britain. Those who attend will leave with a fresh perspective on the role of woman during the time leading up to the Declaration of Independence. \nLight refreshments will be served. This is an in-person event and will be held in the Fireplace South Gallery\, In Person at Woburn Public Library. The venue is fully ADA-compliant. \nThis program is offered by Woburn Public Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. He is the author of numerous publications including books on The Boston Tea Party (2007)\, The Boston Massacre (2006)\, and A Short History of Boston (2004). He is president of the South Boston Historical Society and is involved with several museums and historical societies in Boston. \nJeff Pearlman a city historian in Revere and a member of the Revere Society for Cultural and Historical Preservation as well as the Colonial Society of Massachusetts. Mr. Pearlman is currently an adjunct professor at Salem State University. He previously taught public school in Revere for 36 years.

This special presentation on a lesser-known topic will feature highlighted events and people from the period 1761 (end of the French and Indian Wars) to 1783 (the Treaty of Paris) as they unfolded on and involved people of the Cape and islands. Included also will be details on the Battle of Falmouth of April 1779. David Martin\, Editor of a new book\, “The Cape and Islands in the American Revolution—The Antecedents\, the Rebellion\, and the Conflict”\, will provide the presentation\, and the book will also be available for purchase.

This presentation brings the crisis to life through firsthand accounts that reveal the uncertainty\, fear\, and resilience of those caught in the turmoil. At the heart of these accounts are the letters of Colonel Loammi Baldwin\, who reported directly to General George Washington while overseeing the flood of desperate civilians escaping Boston via the Winnisimmet Ferry. Baldwin’s correspondence provides a vivid record of the refugee movement\, the surveillance of British ships\, and the challenges of defending Chelsea during this pivotal moment in the Revolution. \nAbout Mimi Graney\nMimi Graney is a trustee of the Bellingham Cary House and formerly worked for the City of Chelsea where she focused on public art and local initiatives for community building and economic development. She is the author of Fluff: The Sticky Sweet Story of an American Icon\, which traces the history of Marshmallow Fluff while exploring broader themes of American culture\, industrialization\, and advertising.

SUMMARY:Paul Revere's Bike Ride for the Concord Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Paul Revere’s Bike Ride for the Concord Museum will be held on Saturday\, May 17th to mark the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution. \nRegistered participants will enjoy a recreational ride through Concord\, Lexington\, Lincoln\, Bedford\, and Carlisle. Starting at the Concord Museum\, cyclists can choose to ride a 21.3- or 32.4-mile loop on paved roads\, passing many historic sites including the North Bridge\, the Lexington Green\, and the Paul Revere capture site. A post-ride party with food\, drink\, and entertainment will be held on the Museum lawn at the end of the Ride. \nAll net proceeds from the events will support the Museum’s educational programs\, making it possible for more than 14\,000 school children to learn from the Museum’s unique collection and expert educators.
