This year\, we’re offering a unique experience with a self-guided stroll through the cemetery\, allowing you to access the service records of our Revolutionary War Patriots right from your phone or tablet. It’s a great way to connect with history in a personal way! You’ll also have the chance to engage with colonial interpreters who will be stationed throughout the illuminated grounds\, ready to answer any questions you may have. \nGuest parking will be available on the Country Roadside of Westlawn Cemetery for your convenience. \nWe honor the esteemed Colonel John Robinson (1735-1805)\, Westford’s highest-ranking officer from the Revolutionary War. His legacy is marked by the prominent slate marker that stands proudly in the cemetery. Robinson was not just a military leader; he served as a town selectman and was a courageous commander who led three Westford Minutemen companies to the North Bridge in Concord on that fateful morning of April 19\, 1775. It was here that his men bravely confronted British regulars\, firing what would become known as “the shot heard ’round the world.” Colonel Robinson also fought alongside many of these men at the Battle of Bunker Hill\, showcasing his valor and commitment to our freedom. \nThe cemetery is steeped in history\, located at the intersection of Concord and Country roads. Originally\, this land belonged to Deacon Joshua Fletcher\, one of Westford’s first taxpayers. After his daughter married Samuel Parker\, the property eventually passed to Nathan Proctor\, who generously donated what was then called West Burying Ground to the town. When Westford formally took over the cemetery’s care in 1761\, many founding citizens found their final resting place there\, making it a significant site of remembrance \nColonel Robinson is interred alongside 18 of his fellow Revolutionary War veterans. In 1902\, the Sons of the American Revolution paid homage to their sacrifices by placing iron Maltese crosses on their graves. \nExcitingly\, in 2025\, our nation will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War! As part of this momentous occasion\, the Westford Museum and Historical Society will explore our history during this pivotal era in American history. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 20\, 2025\, 1\,000 military personnel\, first responders\, and civilians from across the country will gather before dawn to honor their fallen comrades as part of the 2025 Tough Ruck held in partnership with the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) and the Boston Marathon. Participants will “ruck” 26.2 miles along the paths of the Revolutionary War\, many in full military gear\, including their rucksacks that weigh as much as 35 pounds on their backs. Tough Ruck raises funds for the Military Friends Foundation\, a nonprofit that supports local service members and families of the fallen in times of need. The B.A.A. awards each Tough Ruck finisher an official Boston Marathon medallion. Finish line festivities include food vendors and kid-friendly activities. SUMMARY:Arlington250: Battle of Menotomy 250th Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:At 2pm on Sunday\, April 20th\, the Town of Arlington will be joined by the Menotomy Minuteman and participants from many historical reenactment groups to reenact the Battle of Menotomy. Beginning at Mass Ave and Grove Street in Arlington\, this ‘running’ battle will stretch nearly one mile of Mass Ave\, ending at Medford Street. Spectators will watch several significant battle engagements. Spectators are only allowed to watch on the northern side of Mass Ave. \nAbout the Battle of Menotomy:\nThe Battle of Menotomy was the longest and bloodiest engagement of April 19th\, 1775. On that fateful day\, Menotomy (now Arlington) was a crossroads village of about 400 farmers\, millers\, tavern keepers\, and their families. Here 79 companies of minutemen from 16 towns\, 3800 militiamen in all\, surrounded and engaged His Majesty’s troops on their retreat from Concord and Lexington. DESCRIPTION:Commemorate Patriots’ Day with a National Park Service program marking the “shot heard round the world.” \nOn April 19\, 1775 British Regular soldiers search the town of Concord\, Massachusetts for stockpiles of illegal military supplies. When nearly 200 Regulars crossed Concord’s North Bridge and headed for the farm of militia Colonel James Barrett\, they left 96 men to guard the important river crossing. Meanwhile\, hundreds of local militia soldiers gathered on the hillside opposing the bridge. Those soldiers from Concord\, Lincoln\, Acton\, Bedford\, Westford\, and elsewhere watched as the British searched their homes and eventually lit fires to burn military supplies. Afraid the Regulars would burn the town\, the militia decided to act. They marched down the long causeway to a confrontation with British Soldiers guarding the bridge and ignited the American Revolution. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 21\, 2025 (Patriot’s Day Holiday)\nOpen House: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM \nHistoric New England invites you walk Lincoln’s trails and visit two of its properties in Lincoln\, Massachusetts: \n– The Codman Estate\, home to five generations of the Chambers/Russell/Codman family.\n– The Walter Gropius House\, home to a revolutionary architect. \nCodman Estate\, c. 1740\n34 Codman Road\, Lincoln\, MA\nhttps://www.historicnewengland.org/property/codman-estate/\nHome to five generations of the Chambers/Russell/Codman family (1708 – 1968)\, in the 18th century the estate was the largest farm in the area with the largest number of enslaved people laboring on it. At the time of the Revolutionary War\, it was owned by Loyalists\, Dr. Charles and Elizabeth Russell\, who fled to Antigua when the war began. \nGropius House\, 1938\n68 Baker Bridge Road\, Lincoln\, MA \nHome \n\nExplore a revolution! Walter Gropius\, founder of the German design school known as the Bauhaus\, was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Modest in scale\, the 1938 Gropius family home was revolutionary in impact. In keeping with Bauhaus philosophy\, every aspect of the house and its surrounding landscape was planned for maximum efficiency and simplicity of design. \nThese two remarkable properties will be open to the public from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Monday\, April 21\, 2025. Docents will be on site to share information and answer questions. Admission is FREE\, although donations are always appreciated! \nGetting there:\n– Both houses are within walking distance of Lincoln’s MBTA Commuter Rail Station (Fitchburg line). DESCRIPTION:How\, why & where the first land battle of the American Revolution could have happened at Salem’s North Bridge in February 1775 instead of in Lexington and at Concord’s North Bridge on April 19th. \nLess than two months before April 19th in 1775\, the American Revolution’s first land battle could have taken place in Marblehead and/or Salem instead of in Lexington and Concord\, in the exact same scenario. The “Salem Alarm” event that occurred in Salem on February 26th\, 1775 and later became known as “Leslie’s Retreat\,” is now quite familiar — especially after the big 250th anniversary reenactment a few weeks ago\, and several educational events about it. \nHere in Danvers on April 23\, an illustrated program will explore the human side of the near-miss episode\, along with its geographical and social context. \nWho was the “Leslie” of “Leslie’s Retreat” ? — Why did he and his Regular Army troops march through the crowded and volatile metropolis of Marblehead to march into Salem? — And where in Marblehead did they land? \nDetail of a painting by J.O.J.
