SUMMARY:Paul Revere's Bike Ride for the Concord Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Paul Revere’s Bike Ride for the Concord Museum will be held on Saturday\, May 17th to mark the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution. \nRegistered participants will enjoy a recreational ride through Concord\, Lexington\, Lincoln\, Bedford\, and Carlisle. Starting at the Concord Museum\, cyclists can choose to ride a 21.3- or 32.4-mile loop on paved roads\, passing many historic sites including the North Bridge\, the Lexington Green\, and the Paul Revere capture site. A post-ride party with food\, drink\, and entertainment will be held on the Museum lawn at the end of the Ride. \nAll net proceeds from the events will support the Museum’s educational programs\, making it possible for more than 14\,000 school children to learn from the Museum’s unique collection and expert educators.

SUMMARY:"Spies Among Us" year long exhibit opening on February 6th 2025
DESCRIPTION:“Spies Among Us” will open on Thursday\, February 6th at 10 a.m. during the museum’s first Thursday opening hours. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 6th and will be open every Thursday going forward from 10-4. We will also showcase the exhibit during our February Second Sunday Open House on Sunday\, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe exhibit will recall the story of General Gage’s spies who visited the Tavern in 1775\, explore examples of espionage on both sides\, and examine the many ways of spying that were used during the American Revolution. \nSpycraft played a pivotal role during the American Revolution\, with both the Continental Army and British forces using intelligence operations to gain strategic advantages. The Golden Ball Tavern and its proprietor Isaac Jones\, played host on a few occasions to British spies sent\, by General Thomas Gage\, to survey the towns that were scattered around the area from Boston to Worcester. This was just one of the British military’s tactics for keeping the Patriots in line. On the American side\, espionage was essential in countering the British military’s superior resources and manpower. \nThe spycraft of the American Revolution was marked by its ingenuity\, the use of civilian networks\, and the blending of military and civilian espionage tactics. Though it was often risky and unreliable\, intelligence-gathering operations played a critical role in the eventual success of the American cause\, allowing the Continental Army to take advantage of British vulnerabilities and ultimately secure victory. \nJoin us as we introduce our new exhibit and our new Thursday opening hours. The museum will continue to be open every second Sunday of the month for our Second Sunday Open House Tours and will now be open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\nWe look forward to welcoming you!

SUMMARY:Red Lion Tavern Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Carlisle Historical Society is excited to offer a special tour of the historic Red Lion Tavern in Carlisle\, Massachusetts. The tavern is still in private hands after nearly 250 years and this tour marks the first time in recent history that it has been open to the public. \nVisitors will have a chance to learn about taverns in colonial times and also learn about John Heald (the Tavern’s proprietor) and his father who both served in the Revolutionary War. The tour will include the history of the building as well as some discussion about colonial architectural practices. After touring the tavern\, visitors can explore the 65 acre property including the site of the old “powder mill”\, rumored to be where Carlisle’s militiamen produced and stored their supply of gun powder in 1775. Militiamen re-enactors will also be drilling and firing muskets on the lawn. \nThe tour will take place on Saturday\, May 17th and visitors are welcome to drop in between 2:00-5:00 pm. The event is free and complimentary food and drinks will be provided. The tour is supported in part with grant funding from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism\, MA250\, and the Carlisle Cultural Council.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Tea on a Gambrel Roof w/tea & cake
DESCRIPTION:A dramatization of ‘A Gambrel Roof’\, a poem by Lucy Larcom. Reservations required $20pp. \nA creative multi-disciplinary theatrical presentation of a circa 1875 local poem about the historic Danvers Jeremiah Page House. Period music\, an art installation\, historic tea blends and signature cakes add to the illustration of the story: \nIn about 1770\, when the British monarchy started taxing tea in the colonies\, Jeremiah told Sarah that “no tea shall be drunk in this house”. However\, while her husband was away one day\, Sarah and two friends secretly had their tea ON the roof of the house. In Sarah’s words\, “Upon a house is not within it”\, so she was still obeying her husband’s wishes. This story was told to Anne L. Page\, Jeremiah’s granddaughter\, by a family friend many years later. Anne then told it to her friend Lucy Larcom\, the famous Beverly poet. Lucy romanticized the story in the poem “A Gambrel Roof” written as the 100th birthday of our nation approached and published in the Atlantic Monthly.

DESCRIPTION:Come and enjoy a light-hearted concert of music that might have been performed in a parlor or for a social gathering in Concord during the colonial period and just afterwards. The program includes: songs composed by one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence from a collection dedicated to George Washington; a set of keyboard variations to the tune of “Yankee Doodle\,” which reportedly was sung as a taunt by the colonists as the British troops retreated from Concord on April 19th and later served as the unofficial hymn of the Continental Army\, as well as music by two Boston composers associated with King’s Chapel. \nFeaturing works by 18th-century American composers: William Selby\, William Billings\, Francis Hopkinson\, and James Hewitt\, as well as music by C.P.E. SUMMARY:Voices from the Grave: Heroes of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Honor the legacy of the American Revolution and Springfield’s contribution at war and on the homefront\, by joining us at our commemorative “Voices from the Grave: Heroes of the American Revolution” cemetery tour at Springfield Cemetery\, on Sunday\, May 18\, 2025. Seven historical residents will be featured on the tour\, including John Bryant III (1742-1816)\, first Armory Superintendent\, who lost his arm in battle; Hannah Mason Bryant (1756-1829)\, who sewed flannel cartridges for the Continental army; Nathaniel Brewer (1711-1809)\, Deacon of First Church for 53 years\, and a joiner by trade; and Susan Freedom (1784-1803)\, a Black indentured servant whose name poignantly symbolizes the struggle for freedom and identity among African Americans in the post-Revolutionary War era. Join the tour to see who else from Springfield’s revolutionary history will be highlighted! This tour will highlight the oldest gravestones and residents ever featured on the “Voices from the Grave” tours\, ongoing for more than a decade. Hosted by the Springfield Preservation Trust and developed by historian Derek Strahan and SPT Secretary Michael Stevens\, the “Heroes of the American Revolution” tour is an hour-long experience through Springfield Cemetery. It is led by docents who take visitors on a tour to graves of interesting cemetery residents\, where costumed interpreters speak about each person of intrigue. Hour-long walking tours will depart every fifteen minutes starting at 1:00PM at Springfield Cemetery\, 171 Maple Street. SUMMARY:Colonial Dance Tunes and Love Songs
DESCRIPTION:Dressed in the clothes of 18th-century itinerant musicians\, Deirdre Sweeney and Al Petty will perform an extensive repertoire of historical dance music\, as well as marches and laments\, including 18th-century tunes such as “Mr. Isaac’s Maggot” and “Jack’s Health.” Their instruments include the flute\, penny whistle\, recorder\, and fife. The music was gathered from manuscripts printed between the 17th and 19th centuries and arranged in counterpoint. \nThe two musicians\, who sometimes appear with a third musician as the Colonial Minstrels\, have long been active in related musical cultures\, including American fife and drum and traditional Irish music. They are popular performers at the Paul Revere House Museum in Boston. \nDoors open at 2 PM for a social period and refreshments; 2:15 PM Announcements and Annual Meeting\, followed by the Guest Speaker. \nThis program is offered by the Bedford Historical Society as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. It was the first naval engagement of the American Revolution in the spring of 1775\, as tensions between the colonists and the British were escalating. While the British controlled Boston\, they relied on supplies from the Harbor Islands. The Battle of Chelsea Creek was a crucial moment when the colonists struck back\, marking the first victory for the Army of the United Colonies. It was also the first time American forces took control of a British warship\, the HMS Diana.

SUMMARY:Happy Accident Broadsides Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join letterpress artist Mitch Cohen and Museum of Printing Director Operations Mitch Ahern as\nthey put on a workshop combining experimental letterpress monoprint techniques with printing customized\nbroadsides. This is a unique printing workshop using everyday items to create unique backgrounds —\nincluding\, but not limited to\, bathmats\, pool covers and other items. You have to do it to believe it. The session\nwill conclude with a letterpress printed keepsake on the background you created.\nWe can then take those backgrounds and use them to print broadsides on the Columbian iron hand press.\nVisitors can pull their own print\, and can even customize a print with their own name.\nThe Happy Accident Broadsides Workshop is free to the public\, thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts\nOffice of Travel and Tourism.\nMitch Cohen is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of letterpress printing and a long-time practitioner\nof the “black arts.” He is the co founder of the Printmaking and Book Arts Center in Rochester\, New York\, a\ndivision of Flower City Arts Center and has taught letterpress printing since 2005. He has a BS in Printing\nEducation from Rochester Institute of Technology.\nMitchel Ahern is the Director of Operations at the Museum of Printing\, where he teaches workshops\, manages\nprinting equipment donations\, and serves on the board. He also has his own shop Mitchelka Show Card Press\nin Lynn\, Massachusetts.

DESCRIPTION:On May 31\, 1778\, the little town of Fall River (then still Freetown) witnessed its only military action of the American Revolution at the mouth of the Quequechan River. \nOn Saturday\, May 31 and Sunday\, June 1\, you are invited to Fall River Heritage State Park to commemorate the 247th anniversary of the Battle of Fall River with a weekend-long living history event on the same riverbanks that witnessed the battle.The Battle of Fall River Reenactment Weekend (May 31 – June 1\, 2025) will feature a variety of engaging activities designed to immerse visitors in the Revolutionary War era and the history of Fall River. \nPresented by the Lafayette-Durfee Historical Foundation in partnership with The City of Fall River\, Viva Fall River\, and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR)\, the events will be hosted at DCR Fall River Heritage State Park. SUMMARY:Manchester in 1775 — Manchester\, The Revolution\, and The War at Sea
DESCRIPTION:For the upcoming 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the Manchester-by-the-Sea Museum is preparing to tell the story of “Manchester\, The Revolution\, and The War at Sea\,” and the opening day on Saturday\, May 31\, will specially feature living history with the Ladies Association of Revolutionary America interpreting Manchester in 1775. \nThe exhibit intends to create a better understanding of the town’s heritage\, specifically the story of Manchester men during the Revolutionary War\, as it was fought at sea\, with additional information about the war at land and home. After opening May 31\, it will run through September\, and it will be reprised next year for the national semiquincentennial in 2026. \nThe Essex National Heritage Commission is the primary grant sponsor of this project. \nThe exhibit intends to create a better understanding of the town’s heritage\, specifically the story of Manchester men during the Revolutionary War\, as it was fought at sea\, with additional information about the war at land and home. \nEVENT COST: \nAdmission cost for the opening and the exhibit is the same as regular self-guided tours of the Museum: $5 for individuals\, $10 for groups 2+; guided tours of the Museum are also available by request at the door at an additional cost (+$10).  Museum members are free along with youth 16 and under.

SUMMARY:Harvard in the American Revolution: A Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:On April 19\, 1775\, Harvard sent at least one man from every household to drive the British back to Boston\, and soldiers from the town fought in every ensuing battle north of the Chesapeake. \nAs part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence\, Harvard will hold a living history tour of the graves of Revolutionary soldiers buried in the Center Cemetery. An overview will describe Harvard’s growing resistance to oppressive actions by the British and its preparation for war. SUMMARY:Revolutionary Walk Through the Old Burying Ground
DESCRIPTION:Don Black\, of Groton’s Old Burying Ground Commission\, will talk about the graves in the Old Burying Ground related to the Revolutionary War. Accompanying the walk and talk will be a display of the Revolutionary War cannon that militia\, including members from Groton\, looted off of a British ship and used at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The cannon was restored by Earl Carter and sits atop a replica carriage Carter constructed with two-century-old wood left over from the construction of the USS Constitution. \nThis program is offered by the Groton History Center as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Concord Art: 250 Paintings for Concord’s 250th!
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the town of Concord’s 250th anniversary\, we invite you to join us for an art-making extravaganza! This June\, artists can register and pick up a free wood panel (8 x 8 inches) from Concord Art to create an image of Concord\, whatever that may mean to you. Perhaps there is a certain road or field or woods or something else that you’ve always been drawn to or inspired by. All media is welcome; the only constraint is that you use your wood panel as your surface! You can enjoy camaraderie and community in the outdoors and create alongside your fellow artists by working either outside Concord Art (along the American Mile) or at one of our designated locations during the week of June 2nd through June 6th (locations to be announced). Artists are welcome to work together each day at these locations from 10am to 4pm. Don’t forget your easel\, supplies\, water\, and snacks! For planning purposes\, please register in advance. Space is limited at each location. Our goal is to collect 250 paintings for Concord’s 250th! SUMMARY:Sacred Rebellion Virtual Exhibition Tour
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, this encore virtual tour of the Congregational Library & Archives’ new in-person exhibition\, Sacred Rebellion\, will be hosted by Executive Director Dr. Kyle Roberts and New England’s Hidden Histories Project Director and Sacred Rebellion curator Dr. Tricia Peone. \nBy the time the American Revolution began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThe interactive tour will be hosted on Zoom\, with registration limited to a small group of attendees. Participants will view Revolutionary-era treasures from the collections; hear stories about how Congregationalists experienced the period leading up to\, during\, and immediately following the war; have opportunities to ask questions; and reflect on what this pivotal event means 250 years later. \nSpace is limited. He received his BA in American Studies from Williams College and his PhD in History from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to coming to the CLA\, he was Associate Director of Library & Museum Programming at the American Philosophical Society and Associate Professor of Public History and New Media and Director of the Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities at Loyola University Chicago. \nA scholar of Atlantic World religion\, print\, and library history\, he is the author of Evangelical Gotham: Religion and the Making of New York City\, 1783-1860 (Chicago\, 2016)\, the co-editor\, with Stephen Schloesser\, of Crossings and Dwellings: Restored Jesuits\, Women Religious\, American Experience 1814-2014 (Brill\, 2017) and\, with Mark Towsey\, of Before the Public Library: Reading\, Community\, and Identity in the Atlantic World\, 1650-1850 (Brill\, 2017). \nKyle is an accomplished public historian and digital humanist whose collaborative projects include the Jesuit Libraries Provenance Project\, the Maryland Loyalism Project\, and Dissenting Academies Online: Virtual Library System. In addition to being the consultant for numerous digital and public history projects\, he sits on the executive committees of the American Catholic Historical Association\, the New England Historical Association\, the Urban History Association He is on the editorial and advisory boards for American Catholic Studies\, Early American Studies\, and portal. \nDr. Tricia Peone joined the CLA in 2022 as the Project Director for New England’s Hidden Histories. Prior to joining the CLA\, she was a research scholar at Historic New England for the Recovering New England’s Voices project. She has also previously worked as the public programs director at New Hampshire Humanities\, a university lecturer teaching classes on the Salem witch trials\, early New England\, and public history\, and as a researcher for cultural heritage organizations. She holds a PhD in history from the University of New Hampshire with a specialization in the early modern Atlantic world and history of science.

SUMMARY:19th Amendment (Women’s Suffrage) Special Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Hub Town Tours for a special celebration of the anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, which granted women the right to vote in 1920. We will explore the captivating stories of Bostonians that followed in the footsteps of Revolutionary women like Abigail Adams and Phillis Wheatley\, and assembled the Women’s Suffrage Movement. This 2.5-hour walking tour begins in Boston’s Public Garden\, and travels through the Back Bay neighborhood\, visiting landmarks such as Copley Square\, the Boston Public Library\, and the Boston Women’s Memorial. Walk in the footsteps of prolific local activists that met Mrs. Adams’s challenge to “Remember the Ladies\,” and gain new appreciation for Boston’s historic role in the advancement of women’s rights.
