SUMMARY:Concord250: Weaving an Address
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: April 14 – June 14\, 2025\nOpening Reception April 14\, 6 p.m. \nThe Umbrella Arts Center in historic Concord Center will commemorate the semiquincentennial of the American Revolution and “the shot heard round the world” with an ambitious outdoor/indoor public and gallery art exhibition\, Weaving an Address\, curated by artist Marla McLeod. \nFor the first time\, Weaving an Address combines The Umbrella’s popular Art Ramble public art installation\, on view April 15 through October 7 at Brister’s Hill in nearby Walden Woods\, with an indoor exhibition (on view April 14 through June 14) in The Umbrella’s Allie Kussin Gallery. The exhibition features site-specific work by eight prominent Black artists combining sculpture\, fiber art\, installation and live performance inspired by little-known experiences of historical Black inhabitants of Concord and its Walden Woods. \nFeatured artists in the exhibition are Sharon Chandler Correnty\, Ifé Franklin\, Stephen Hamilton\, Whitney Harris\, Ekua Holmes\, Perla Mabel\, Marla McLeod\, Kimberly Love Radcliffe\, and Anthony Peyton Young. \nOutdoors\, large-scale work will be installed on Brister’s Hill\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved.Indoors at The Umbrella\, inter-related fiber artworks will weave narratives from fragmented pasts to offer a vision of how history shapes the present and influences the future. \nSupporting community activities include an opening reception on April 14\, monthly curator talks\, a processional with artist Ifé Franklin\, and participation in the town-wide Revolutionary Concordians Trading Card program. \nThis exhibition is presented as part of the Concord250 commemoration\, in partnership with The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House\, in association with Gather 2025\, a month-long exploration and celebration of fiber and textile art in Greater Boston\, and with permission of Concord Natural Resources Division. \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Weaving for more information about special engagements\, wayfinding\, artist bios\, and background to the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Help us remember our heroes! Take part in observing Memorial Day and commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill! Did you know Pepperell provided the commander and about 60 men who fought at Bunker Hill? Eight of them were killed and eight wounded. We honor them today\, as well as the 230 veterans buried in the Park Street cemeteries\, by placing flags and saluting them all by name. \nWho? Children\, scouts\, parents\, adults and patriots of all types\nWhere? Walton Cemetery\, 5 Park Street\, Pepperell\, MA 01463\nWhen? Saturday\, May 24\, 2025 (Rain or Shine) \nSchedule\n8:00 a.m Doors open at DAR Prudence Wright Chapter House\, the red brick schoolhouse next to the cemetery.\nRefreshments: Enjoy hot cocoa\, coffee\, water\, and pastries from The Bakery. \n9:00 a.m. Program begins\nMaster of Ceremonies: Tony Saboliauskas\, Vietnam Veteran & Purple Heart recipient \n* Patriot Fife and Drum Duo: March with the musicians!\n· 6th Middlesex Regiment discusses uniforms and muskets. DESCRIPTION:The event will include: \n– Explore the SSV Ernestina-Morrissey\, the 1894 schooner from the permanent fleet of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy\, and learn about the first British vessel captured and destroyed—the HMS Diana \n– Artillery Demonstration \n– Revolutionary-Era Militia Encampment \n– Musket Firing \n– Food Vendors and a Beer Garden \nAdditionally\, we’ll have a Governor Bellingham-Cary House Museum Open House\, as well as a 90-minute guided Boat Tour with Boston Harbor Now through the Mill Creek and Boston Bay. \nThe Battle of Chelsea Creek is a significant\, yet often forgotten\, event in the history of the American Revolution. It was the first naval engagement of the American Revolution in the spring of 1775\, as tensions between the colonists and the British were escalating. While the British controlled Boston\, they relied on supplies from the Harbor Islands. The Battle of Chelsea Creek was a crucial moment when the colonists struck back\, marking the first victory for the Army of the United Colonies. It was also the first time American forces took control of a British warship\, the HMS Diana.

SUMMARY:Happy Accident Broadsides Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join letterpress artist Mitch Cohen and Museum of Printing Director Operations Mitch Ahern as\nthey put on a workshop combining experimental letterpress monoprint techniques with printing customized\nbroadsides. This is a unique printing workshop using everyday items to create unique backgrounds —\nincluding\, but not limited to\, bathmats\, pool covers and other items. You have to do it to believe it. The session\nwill conclude with a letterpress printed keepsake on the background you created.\nWe can then take those backgrounds and use them to print broadsides on the Columbian iron hand press.\nVisitors can pull their own print\, and can even customize a print with their own name.\nThe Happy Accident Broadsides Workshop is free to the public\, thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts\nOffice of Travel and Tourism.\nMitch Cohen is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of letterpress printing and a long-time practitioner\nof the “black arts.” He is the co founder of the Printmaking and Book Arts Center in Rochester\, New York\, a\ndivision of Flower City Arts Center and has taught letterpress printing since 2005. He has a BS in Printing\nEducation from Rochester Institute of Technology.\nMitchel Ahern is the Director of Operations at the Museum of Printing\, where he teaches workshops\, manages\nprinting equipment donations\, and serves on the board. He also has his own shop Mitchelka Show Card Press\nin Lynn\, Massachusetts.
