SUMMARY:Speaking Event Before March to Salem's North Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30am at St. Peter’s-San Pedro Episcopal Church on Saturday February 22. 2025 to learn the history behind Leslie’s Retreat\, and to hear from current elected officials. \nOn February 26\, 1775\, Salem witnessed what could have been the first battle of the American Revolution. This event marked Salem’s first armed resistance to British authority\, which occurred just weeks before the battles of Lexington and Concord. The diplomatic resolution achieved that day in 1775 exemplifies the importance of leadership and measured response in times of crisis—qualities that remain relevant in public service today.

SUMMARY:Red Coat March to Salem’s North Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of “Leslie’s Retreat\,” a pivotal moment that marked Salem’s first stand against British authority and helped spark the American Revolution. \nOn February 26\, 1775\, just weeks before the shots at Lexington and Concord\, Salem witnessed what could have been the first battle of the American Revolution. When British Lt. Colonel Alexander Leslie and his troops attempted to seize colonial weapons\, they were met with remarkable resistance at Salem’s North Bridge—where courage\, diplomacy\, and level-headed leadership prevented bloodshed but demonstrated American resolve. \nExperience history come alive as we recreate this dramatic confrontation at its original location. Watch as historical reenactors portray the tense standoff between British troops and Salem’s citizens. \nBe part of this remarkable commemoration as we honor the courage\, wisdom\, and restraint shown by both sides during this critical moment in American history. This event offers a unique opportunity to witness and understand how Salem’s citizens stood firm in defense of their rights while avoiding the outbreak of war—if only for a few more weeks. \n  \nEvent Website: https://www.salem400.org/event/red-coat-march-to-north-bridge/ \n

SUMMARY:Revolution Ball: A celebration to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Leslie's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate History with us! \nThe Revolution Ball is a colonial dress/black tie evening of live music\, dancing\, food\, and drinks. The event celebrates the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Leslie’s Retreat from the Salem gunpowder raid of 1775. \nIn February of 1775\, Colonel Alexander Leslie and his British regulars were sent to raid the gunpowder and cannon stores of Salem. On their way through Marblehead and Salem\, an alarm was raised and townsfolk and local militia responded in large numbers to impede Leslie and his soldiers. Rather than the confrontation ending in violence\, collaboration and diplomacy won the day\, thanks to local minister Rev. Thomas Barnard\, Captain John Felt\, Colonel David Mason\, and Colonel Leslie. \nThe evening’s events will begin with period drinks\, heavy hors d’oeuvres\, and music. Period dancing will commence in the ballroom\, led by Commonwealth Vintage Dancers. Local reenactors will be present\, both to take photos with and to participate in the evening’s festivities. \nGuests are welcome to wear either colonial costume or black tie attire.
