SUMMARY:Deborah Sampson Gannett: Reflections on her Revolutionary War Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Julia Getz\, actor and educator will portray Deborah Sampson the Massachusetts State Heroine as she describes her life as Continental Soldier Robert Shurtlieff. She was a woman\, prohibited from fighting for her country\, who risked imprisonment and dishonor to do so. She will be joined by a small company of Minutemen in full costume. The material is based on the speech she gave when she toured Massachusetts\, New Hampshire and New York in 1802\, along with her experiences recounted in her own words in the 1866 version of Hermann Mann’s “The Female Review ” originally published in 1797. The 1866 version edited by Adam Vinton contains Deborah Sampson’s rewritten descriptions of her impressive exploits. They describe an unusual woman who is now is the Official Heroine of the Commonwealth. Her story is a powerful example of courage\, ingenuity and a fight for recognition in a world that often-denied women their place in history.

SUMMARY:Untold Stories of Women’s Suffrage
DESCRIPTION:The 250th anniversary of men gaining a voice in their governance and securing the right to vote is well celebrated — yet needs its companion story of the women’s fight for these very same rights! This Thursday\, come see an inspiring choral performance and film portraying the history of women’s suffrage\, co-sponsored by the Arlington Friends of the Drama\, Cantilena Women’s Voices and the League of Women Voters of Arlington. \nThe evening begins with How Long Must We Wait\, a documentary film by Jaclyn O’Laughlin about the arduous 72-year battle that women fought to achieve the right to vote in the United States\, which culminated the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920. \nIn the second half of the evening\, the voices of suffragists come to life in the production of Lifting as We Climb\, a work composed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this constitutional amendment. Eight guest readers narrate the history of the fight for equality\, voicing the words and ideas of many of the activists of the movement\, interspersed with a moving choral accompaniment provided by Cantilena\, Women’s Voices and members of Voices Rising. It reveals the hidden struggles and contributions made by African American women\, reminding us that that there is still much work left to be done in the fight for women’s equal rights and for democracy. \nAn informal talk back and reception follow the program. Reserve your ticket ahead of time by going to afdtheater.org The event is free; donations are welcome. It will be broadcast live by ACMi. For questions and details\, contact: info@afdtheater.org

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Tea on a Gambrel Roof
DESCRIPTION:A dramatization of ‘A Gambrel Roof’\, a poem by Lucy Larcom. Reservations requested. \nA creative multi-disciplinary theatrical presentation of a circa 1875 local poem about the historic Danvers Jeremiah Page House. Period music\, and an art installation add to the illustration of the story: \nIn about 1770\, when the British monarchy started taxing tea in the colonies\, Jeremiah told Sarah that “no tea shall be drunk in this house”. However\, while her husband was away one day\, Sarah and two friends secretly had their tea ON the roof of the house. In Sarah’s words\, “Upon a house is not within it”\, so she was still obeying her husband’s wishes. This story was told to Anne L. Page\, Jeremiah’s granddaughter\, by a family friend many years later. Anne then told it to her friend Lucy Larcom\, the famous Beverly poet. Lucy romanticized the story in the poem “A Gambrel Roof” written as the 100th birthday of our nation approached and published in the Atlantic Monthly. \nTapley Memorial Hall\, 13 Page Street\, Danvers MA. Wheelchair accessible building and parking available. Additional parking in the Elm Street lot. \nDonations appreciated \nWe are proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council’s Card to Culture program. \nDanvers Historical Society: 978-777-1666 or E-mail to connect@danvershistory.org
