Baldwin’s correspondence provides a vivid record of the refugee movement\, the surveillance of British ships\, and the challenges of defending Chelsea during this pivotal moment in the Revolution. \nAbout Mimi Graney\nMimi Graney is a trustee of the Bellingham Cary House and formerly worked for the City of Chelsea where she focused on public art and local initiatives for community building and economic development. She is the author of Fluff: The Sticky Sweet Story of an American Icon\, which traces the history of Marshmallow Fluff while exploring broader themes of American culture\, industrialization\, and advertising.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a historical presentation on the Battle of Chelsea Creek\, presented by Robert Allison\, Professor at Suffolk University\, and Jeff Pearlman\, at 11:30 a.m. \nRobert Allison is a Professor of History\, Language and Global Culture at Suffolk University. He’s one of the coordinators of The Revolution 250 Advisory Group that is overseeing commemorations across Massachusetts of the American Revolution. He is the author of numerous publications including books on The Boston Tea Party (2007)\, The Boston Massacre (2006)\, and A Short History of Boston (2004). He is president of the South Boston Historical Society and is involved with several museums and historical societies in Boston. \nJeff Pearlman a city historian in Revere and a member of the Revere Society for Cultural and Historical Preservation as well as the Colonial Society of Massachusetts. Mr. Pearlman is currently an adjunct professor at Salem State University. He previously taught public school in Revere for 36 years.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the uncomfortable truth that\, as Newburyport debated concepts of freedom and independence on the eve of Revolution\, a significant number of Americans were not free. Thousands of African Americans were enslaved\, up to 20% of the entire population of the colonies. In Newburyport\, Black voices spoke up forcefully for their liberty and equality amid the revolutionary fervor\, and helped turn the tide in Massachusetts against slavery. DESCRIPTION:A new film From Sea to Shining Sea: Katharine Lee Bates and The Story of America the Beautiful will have several screenings on April 27\, 2025\, from 2pm – 4pm at Falmouth Museums on the Green as part of the “Lyrics and Lanterns” historical event as Falmouth celebrates the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution Kick Off. \nFrom Sea to Shining Sea explores the remarkable life of Katharine Lee Bates\, poet\, professor\, and social reformer\, beginning with her childhood in Falmouth. An unsung hero best known for authoring America the Beautiful\, Bates was deeply committed to the beauty and principles of our country. This film is especially appropriate as statewide Massachusetts 250 commemorations lead up to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026\, offering hope for the healing of a polarized America. Various state and federal commemorations are already underway for America250. \nAmerica The Beautiful may be America’s most beloved song. The words are found in nearly every hymn book in the country. It celebrates our natural beauty and makes a powerful appeal for justice\, brotherhood and inclusion. It has been sung at inaugurations\, demonstrations\, and sporting events\, in operatic\, folk\, country and other styles. Yet few know about the fascinating life of Katharine Lee Bates\, the Falmouth-born Wellesley college professor who wrote the lyrics to the song. Her story should not be forgotten\, nor its context. Her contribution to our national culture merited her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970; and a February 2025 New England Music Hall of Fame class which also included Queen’s Freddie Mercury\, The Monkees and other music industry influentials. \nThe first words of the song came to Bates as she surveyed the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains from the broad summit of Colorado’s Pike’s Peak on July 22\, 1893. Her verses acknowledge that the United States has often not lived up to its promises and ideals\, yet it honors the unbroken chain of Americans who strived to make it all it can be – from sea to shining sea. \nThe 37 minute film includes hundreds of still photos\, archival film clips\, beautiful watercolors and stunning contemporary footage from Falmouth and other locations\, bringing to life the historical events that shaped Bates’ thinking\, including the Civil War\, women’s suffrage\, the Gilded Age\, the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair\, immigration to America\, the Spanish American War\, the Lawrence textile workers’ strike of 1912\, and the First World War. The song America the Beautiful is presented in the film by Blane Howard\, an independent country recording artist\, and includes excerpts from many other renowned artists.

DESCRIPTION:Every year on Patriot’s Day\, the National Lancers reenact the rides of Paul Revere and William Dawes. \nPaul Revere leaves on horseback from the North End\, Boston and William Dawes on horseback leaves from John Elliot Square\, 10 Putnam St.\, Roxbury\, warning the people while on their way to Lexington of the pending arrival of the British Regulars. They arrive separately after Revere travels through Charlestown\, Somerville\, Medford and Arlington. While Dawes travels through Roxbury\, Brookline\, Cambridge and Arlington en route to Lexington.

DESCRIPTION:The British Regular Army was one of the most powerful military forces in the world in the 18th century. But in the course of one fateful day\, their luck changed. On April 19\, 1775\, 750 soldiers set out on a grueling 40-mile march\, and walked straight into a revolution. In Lexington and Concord\, they fought with locals intent on thwarting their mission\, and fled back to Boston chased by thousands of American soldiers. Munroe Tavern became an important resting point on their journey. Stop by and meet members of His Majesty’s recreated 10th Regiment of Foot to see military drilling and learn more about the lives of our forgotten foes.

SUMMARY:North Bridge Program (Minute Man NHP)
DESCRIPTION:Commemorate Patriots’ Day with a National Park Service program marking the “shot heard round the world.” \nOn April 19\, 1775 British Regular soldiers search the town of Concord\, Massachusetts for stockpiles of illegal military supplies. When nearly 200 Regulars crossed Concord’s North Bridge and headed for the farm of militia Colonel James Barrett\, they left 96 men to guard the important river crossing. Meanwhile\, hundreds of local militia soldiers gathered on the hillside opposing the bridge. Those soldiers from Concord\, Lincoln\, Acton\, Bedford\, Westford\, and elsewhere watched as the British searched their homes and eventually lit fires to burn military supplies. Afraid the Regulars would burn the town\, the militia decided to act. They marched down the long causeway to a confrontation with British Soldiers guarding the bridge and ignited the American Revolution.
