DESCRIPTION:Marblehead 250 offers a special way to celebrate our Nation’s history in Marblehead!\nSeptember 21 and 22\, 2025 \nThe Hannah\, the first ship in Washington’s fleet\, was launched in September 1775. To commemorate that important part of Marblehead’s history\, the Fame – very similar in size and appearance to the Hannah – will be docked at Marblehead’s State Street Landing\, 75 Front Street\, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday\, September 20\, and Sunday\, September 21. Visitors may board the ship at no charge and experience an 18th century schooner. Crew and members of Marblehead’s Glover’s Regiment will be on hand to tell the story of Hannah and answer questions. \nBOTH mornings we will offer a 90-minute sail from 10:15-11:45 a.m. All tickets are $50\, with proceeds to benefit the Marblehead 250 events for 2025 and 2026. \n• This is a SAIL\, so the route is subject to wind and weather. We sail as far and as fast as we can based on conditions\, and our goal is always to shut off the engine and give our guests an authentic schooner experience. Every trip is different.\n• Guests have the opportunity to raise sails\, take the tiller\, learn knots\, and engage with our knowledgeable crew about Hannah’s and Fame’s interesting histories\, and learn about the many islands\, lighthouses\, forts\, and other sights of Salem Sound. It was a journey marked by hypothermia\, disease\, starvation\, hurricanes\, and blizzards. Dozens perished; survivors endured eating everything from dogs to lip salve before reaching their target. Though the attack ultimately failed\, Arnold’s expedition helped pave the way for America’s eventual victory. \nIn Through a Howling Wilderness\, Desjardin tells this gripping story of endurance\, sacrifice\, and leadership before Arnold’s name became synonymous with treason. \nAbout the Speaker: Tom Desjardin holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History and is the author of multiple acclaimed books. DESCRIPTION:“Spies Among Us” will open on Thursday\, February 6th at 10 a.m. during the museum’s first Thursday opening hours. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 6th and will be open every Thursday going forward from 10-4. We will also showcase the exhibit during our February Second Sunday Open House on Sunday\, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe exhibit will recall the story of General Gage’s spies who visited the Tavern in 1775\, explore examples of espionage on both sides\, and examine the many ways of spying that were used during the American Revolution. \nSpycraft played a pivotal role during the American Revolution\, with both the Continental Army and British forces using intelligence operations to gain strategic advantages. The Golden Ball Tavern and its proprietor Isaac Jones\, played host on a few occasions to British spies sent\, by General Thomas Gage\, to survey the towns that were scattered around the area from Boston to Worcester. This was just one of the British military’s tactics for keeping the Patriots in line. On the American side\, espionage was essential in countering the British military’s superior resources and manpower. \nThe spycraft of the American Revolution was marked by its ingenuity\, the use of civilian networks\, and the blending of military and civilian espionage tactics. Though it was often risky and unreliable\, intelligence-gathering operations played a critical role in the eventual success of the American cause\, allowing the Continental Army to take advantage of British vulnerabilities and ultimately secure victory. \nJoin us as we introduce our new exhibit and our new Thursday opening hours. The museum will continue to be open every second Sunday of the month for our Second Sunday Open House Tours and will now be open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\nWe look forward to welcoming you!

SUMMARY:"Spies Among Us" year long exhibit opening on February 6th 2025
DESCRIPTION:“Spies Among Us” will open on Thursday\, February 6th at 10 a.m. during the museum’s first Thursday opening hours. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 6th and will be open every Thursday going forward from 10-4. We will also showcase the exhibit during our February Second Sunday Open House on Sunday\, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe exhibit will recall the story of General Gage’s spies who visited the Tavern in 1775\, explore examples of espionage on both sides\, and examine the many ways of spying that were used during the American Revolution. \nSpycraft played a pivotal role during the American Revolution\, with both the Continental Army and British forces using intelligence operations to gain strategic advantages. The Golden Ball Tavern and its proprietor Isaac Jones\, played host on a few occasions to British spies sent\, by General Thomas Gage\, to survey the towns that were scattered around the area from Boston to Worcester. This was just one of the British military’s tactics for keeping the Patriots in line. On the American side\, espionage was essential in countering the British military’s superior resources and manpower. \nThe spycraft of the American Revolution was marked by its ingenuity\, the use of civilian networks\, and the blending of military and civilian espionage tactics. Though it was often risky and unreliable\, intelligence-gathering operations played a critical role in the eventual success of the American cause\, allowing the Continental Army to take advantage of British vulnerabilities and ultimately secure victory. \nJoin us as we introduce our new exhibit and our new Thursday opening hours. SUMMARY:Weaving An Address - Curator Tour and Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a free program exploring The Umbrella Arts Center’s outdoors public art ramble\, Weaving an Address\, a site-specific exhibition of work by prominent Black artists commemorating colonial-era Black residents of Concord’s famed Walden Woods. \nOn Saturday\, July 19 at 3PM\, curator and artist Marla McLeod will lead a guided tour of the artwork installed at Brister’s Hill in Walden Woods\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved before Thoreau. \nThe tour will be followed at 4:30PM by refreshments and a panel discussion back at The Umbrella Arts Center (40 Stow Street\, Concord\, MA) with McLeod in dialogue with historian Elise Lemire\, author of Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts\, who was recently a subject of the new international documentary\, Concord’s Secret History\, just released on over 500 PBS stations. Saturday’s discussion will examine the “journey from archive to art\,” and Lemire’s scholarly research that fueled Weaving’s creative installations. \nPart of the town’s Revolution250 celebrations\, this program is co-presented by The Umbrella Arts Center\, The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House: Concord’s African American History Museum. His 1781 civil lawsuit for battery led to the 1783 criminal case that ended slavery in Massachusetts. \nJoin us for the 5th Annual Quock Walker Day Community Celebration at the Lexington Visitors Center Lawn\, 1875 Massachusetts Avenue\, Lexington\, MA 02420 – FREE. The festivities start at 11 am with music and recitation of the Governor’s Quock Walker Day proclamation. \nFIND YOUR JOY at any age with storytellers\, Farm to Plate Caribbean American Food Truck\, a dance workshop\, Black heritage scavenger hunts\, hands-on flax processing demonstration\, military reenactors\, and musical performance by Rhythms of Ghana. SUMMARY:Burying Ground Tour 3: Sawyer Hill and Newburyport's Road to Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join Bethany Groff Dorau for a fascinating journey through history as we explore the Sawyer Hill Burying Ground. Discover the stories of the men and women who played a vital role in the Revolutionary War. \nSawyer Hill Burying Ground has been the final resting place for many of the Newburys’ dearly departed since 1695. The three-acre cemetery’s oldest stone is from 1705 and belongs to Mrs. Hannah Bartlett\, grandmother of Josiah Bartlett\, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Moses Little\, hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill\, also rests here\, along with numerous other men and women who lived through the American Revolution on “the Plains” in the west end of Newbury. \nImportant: Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water. DESCRIPTION:The Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum presents Forty Acres & The American Revolution; Stories of Independence & Servitude\, a public talk with three leading scholars: Friederike Baer\, a historian of 18th-century Hessian soldiers\, Marge Bruchac\, a scholar of local Indigenous histories\, and Charmaine Nelson\, director of the Slavery North project at the University of Massachusetts. Together\, these scholars expand the narrative of the American Revolution and the many folks who lived and worked at Forty Acres during the Revolutionary Era\, including enslaved\, indentured and free persons. The talks will be held in the Museum’s Corn Barn on Sunday\, June 29th at 2 pm. The program is free and open to the public. \nThe accompanying exhibit\, Forty Acres & The American Revolution; Stories of Independence & Servitude\, commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American revolution by sharing new research on the lives and labor rooted in Hadley through the Revolutionary Era. This exhibit connects those that were enslaved or indentured at Forty Acres to Fort Ticonderoga\, the Green Mountain Boys\, the Scottish Highlands\, Prussia and beyond\, widening our view of the Revolutionary battlefield. The exhibit is free\, and open to the public Saturday to Wednesday 1pm-4pm through October 2025.

SUMMARY:Militia Encampment to Re-enact Revolutionary Way Activities in Dartmouth\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Living History Comes Alive on Saturday\, June 28 and Sunday\, June 29\, 2025\, at the “Akin Farmstead” at 762 Dartmouth Street in Dartmouth\, MA. This two-day event sponsored by the Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust\, Inc. (DHPT) will include a militia encampment on site to re-enact Revolutionary War activities in old Dartmouth. Additionally\, DHPT’s popular seasonal event\, “Never Idle Hands–Living in Early America\,” will be held on Sunday\, June 29\, and will include new and returning participants who will be on hand to showcase: 18th century cookery; demonstrations of early woodworking techniques using antique tools and other artisanal craftmaking; participate in an archaeological dig on site and view archaeological finds from the property; learn about apple cultivation in the 1700s. Opportunities to engage with Revolutionary era re-enactors. Tour the 1762 Akin House and learn about the Akin families’ contributions to the War of Independence; music by the Buzzards Bay Buccaneers\, and more. Children are welcome to play games as the young ones did during this period in history. \nStop by during the course of these two days! DESCRIPTION:The 250th anniversary of men gaining a voice in their governance and securing the right to vote is well celebrated — yet needs its companion story of the women’s fight for these very same rights! This Thursday\, come see an inspiring choral performance and film portraying the history of women’s suffrage\, co-sponsored by the Arlington Friends of the Drama\, Cantilena Women’s Voices and the League of Women Voters of Arlington. \nThe evening begins with How Long Must We Wait\, a documentary film by Jaclyn O’Laughlin about the arduous 72-year battle that women fought to achieve the right to vote in the United States\, which culminated the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920. \nIn the second half of the evening\, the voices of suffragists come to life in the production of Lifting as We Climb\, a work composed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this constitutional amendment. Eight guest readers narrate the history of the fight for equality\, voicing the words and ideas of many of the activists of the movement\, interspersed with a moving choral accompaniment provided by Cantilena\, Women’s Voices and members of Voices Rising. It reveals the hidden struggles and contributions made by African American women\, reminding us that that there is still much work left to be done in the fight for women’s equal rights and for democracy. \nAn informal talk back and reception follow the program. Throughout 2025 and 2026\, Massachusetts 250 (or MA250) will commemorate the many battles across the City of Cambridge and the state that led to America’s independence. \nFor 400 years\, Harvard Square has been the epicenter of American literature\, philosophy\, and education. From the first printing press in North America to our beloved book stores today\, the outstanding tradition of poetry and storytelling\, from Anne Bradstreet to Allen Ginsberg\, the Square has been home to all things book-related. Stroll between our current bookstores while hearing stories of the incredible literature that was written in and inspired by these streets. Acclaimed lawyer\, author and politician\, Richard Henry Dana Jr. (portrayed by Daniel Berger-Jones of Boston History Company) hosts these tours designed exclusively for the Bookish Ball. \nThe festivities begin at 11am on Harvard’s Smith Campus Plaza (located at 1350 Massachusetts Avenue) where you will be greeted by Elizabeth Glover\, portrayed by Linda Peck. Glover established the first printing press in the Thirteen Colonies on Dunster Street\, just around the corner! We will delve deeply into the tumultuous years before the U.S. Civil War when 19th-century Bostonians grappled with the institution of slavery and demanded an end to racial injustice across their young nation.
